Jewell: We Deserved to Win
Jewell: We Deserved to Win
Saturday, 3rd Dec 2011 18:10

Blues boss Paul Jewell felt his side deserved to have beaten bogey side Watford after the Hornets came from behind to claim a 2-1 victory at Portman Road. The loss means Town’s winless streak against the visitors stretches to 14 games and their run of defeats is up to seven.

Jewell said: “We should have had three points. On Tuesday we were abject, but today you could see the determination — we just didn’t have any luck.

“I’m not one for blaming luck, I never have been, but for their first goal [John] Eustace goes to lay it back, it sticks under his foot, the little ricochet goes their way and they go on to get a penalty.

“We should have dealt with their second goal, but we’ve had balls flash across their box, we’ve had shots saved, we’ve done everything but score another goal.

“I’m hugely disappointed to lose seven games in a row, but effort-wise I can’t question the players today.”

Jewell said there were few arguments from his players about the penalty: “There were no complaints from our side.

“I didn’t have a great view from where we were, but Sonko didn’t complain. You’re not the first person to ask me that, someone else said it didn’t look a penalty but the lads didn’t complain.”

Jewell admitted his 21st-placed side are now in a relegation battle: “No doubt about it, we are. After 19 games we’re fourth bottom of the league, so of course we’re in a relegation battle.

“But I just saw that two weeks ago Burnley were fourth bottom, now they’re 10th, so it can change quickly, but it’s seven games on the bounce now and I’m aware of that more than anybody.

“It was a day to stand up and be counted," he added."There was no hiding place for any of us. The only thing that went against us today was the result.

“Maybe I see it wrong, but I think I’m an honest enough manager to know when we’ve been outplayed and been bad and today I think we were dead unlucky.”

Watford manager Sean Dyche was pleased to grab the three points: “With Ipswich’s unfortunate run you don’t want to be the team they turn over because that run will end at some point.

“We knew it would be a tough game and we knew we’d have to go all the way through the game whatever the ref played minutes-wise, and we didn’t.

“It wasn’t always silky from us, it wasn’t always our best performance but the desire of the players and the work ethic of the players was fantastic, I thought.”

Our team is TOO old to cope after 60+ minutes.

My friends said the same thing. Chopra was awful with a capital F. They also said about the chance he got. All he needed to do was a little jump and it would have been in the back of the net. Much harder to miss than hit yet he managed. Scotland apparently played as good a game as he has ever played for ITFC.

Sadly yes; you also forget these gems that PJ served up:

Swansea 4 Town 1
Leicester 4 Town 2
Town 1 Reading 3
Town 0 Watford 3

For all those that think we should sack Jewell.
Can you think of a club that sacked their manager once a year or so being successful? Well the only example I can think of is Man City, and we don't have their billions. So let's give the guy a period of time to get his team together and finish as best we can this season, then get better next.
My personal view is that we should rely much less on loans, and get some players in that will play week in, week out. Andrews should be signed, if we can get Collins then great. But Wabara is not going to build our team in the next few years.
We are better than this, but if you can name an affordable manager who has a proven track record to take over then please go ahead. And no, I don't think GB is an option.

Interesting to see most of the posters on here being negative, when if they had been at the game or stayed till the end would have witnessed several thousand SUPPORTERS applauding the team off the field.

I'm not sure all these want PJ out, at least not for the moment.

I know there were the usual minority of boo boys but they were heavily outnumbered by those applauding SUPPORTERS

Siebdykstra. At what stage is enough time for PJ? It's PJ's team, he has had 40 games since Jan and we have shipped 74 goals. In 13 of these matches we have conceded 3 or more.

Let's wait until we are in league 2, as we have conceded more than any professional club this season with the exception of Northampton (same number 39) who are 89th of 92!

I wasn't at the game today, I live in Durham sadly, but I'm interested by alfromcol's post. What was the fan's reception? How actually was the game? I get the feeling from all I've read and heard that the players really did play for the fans and the manager today and sound gutted by the loss because they put in a resounding effort. I really hope that continues!

Garv - I haven't been to many games but in every one I've seen with both Scotland and Chopra I've been more impressed by Scotland. I have real faith in Chops but Scotland's willingness under Jewell has been a massive turnaround. As, you may say, has Martin's, who I understand played today?

I wouldn't give up yet. It's as if you're all hoping that we lose a couple more so that the manager gets sacked. Here's a thought. What if the effort today rallies the players and next week they snatch a win and then start to get results. Do we sack Jewell then? In anticipation of the next poor run of form? I'd give him a season. Even if we go down, I don't know if an emergency change of manager will necessarily save us from the drop or bring us to progress, may I remind you that's exactly what Jewell was supposed to be against Keane.

Anyway, gutted by the score I was delighted to see we were ahead at half time and can't imagine how disappointing it was to actually be there! I don't think we'll see Evans fire Jewell this week though, and we certainly won't see him making any 'statements' about it if he does, he'll hide behind Clegg as per. So get over it and hope we grab a result next week!

a lot of the boo-boys can't even be bothered to post. this would be the perfect opportunity to do "a bit of boo-ing" but they can't even be bothered because of the pitiful state of our club. they just want paul jewell out and they have said their bit.
the situation has become grave and all true supporters know that. 7 straight defeats and some of the worst results in our history as a football club. some true hammerings and spectacular defeats. we play the best we can (we did today) and still lose (not a good sign) against a team that is also in great trouble.
we have to get 4 points from our next 2 games just to stay in this battle against relegation. the "easiest" game to get 3 points from is our next one, Barnsley. sorry, but i just can't see it happening. call me negative all you want but after seeing so many horrendous capitulations this season i can't see how we can win this.
the big question is, when do we say enough is enough? when we are 6 points clear at the bottom? when is it time to say pj has had his chance?
i have seen some comical defensive displays under keane but IMHO the comical displays by pj's team have been worse. every supporter at this club knew when pj came in that we had a VERY bad defence. we needed to concentrate on this area. we should have thrown money at it to get 4 completely new, young, hungry and ambitious players in (of the Cresswell ilk). 4 Cresswells would have satisfied most of us. Instead we have collins (loan and new baby+family to think of, i've liked him to be fair), sonko (often injured), ingi (hmmmm...). when pj came in the impression we got was that he would build a team similar to our country neighbours up the road. instead we have a bunch of ex-premier league players who struggle to play beyond 65 mins every game. how many games do we lose in the last 20 mins? adam le fondre and players like that should have been brought in. maybe a good offer for trotter and ambrose would have been worthwhile or even a major investment in youth talent up front (rhodes for example). instead we have the duke. cresswell looks great in left midfield when he goes forward, give him that opportuity by making a major offer for dan harding from southampton (massive talent).
the reason why people are negative here is clear. we have lost 7 on the trot and most of us can't see how we are going to get out of this mess. most of the boo-boys are too depressed to even bother posting, says it all really

And most of the talented youth players you mentioned here were given away by this club.A good reason to be sad.

Cannot fault the team selection.

Stockdale - good

Edwards - not great, can't cross, needs to stay back more
Sonko - given a right game by Iwelumo, pen looked clumsy, clearly made us more solid though
Collins - pretty sound
Cresswell - usual

Martin - ran his socks off, one mistake with the second goal
Andrews - better than recent form, good goal, needs to hold the ball better though
Bowyer - good game
Murphy - can't fault him, wasn't exceptional

Chopra - hold on, did he play?
Scotland - worked tirelessly, holds the ball well, don't drop him

Ellington - very good in the air, did what he could while on the pitch

We were the better team, should've won. How many Cresswell free kicks from the left did we need? We were queueing up to nod it in. Again little things lose us the game, looked clumsy from Sonko, ironic that he was meant to be our saviour. Felt sorry for Martin, one mistake all game was punished, players know to put it in the stand, put for whatever reason they don't, it happens. That is not Jewell's fault, fact.

@ErikaTractor: I agree with some of your comments but..

Dan Harding was rubbish down here, what were you watching?? Anyone who knows anything knows that..wasn't he also given away by Leeds?

A defeat to Barnsley will surely mark a new low for the club. The irony would be palpable when the last great high for this club was at Wembley against the same team. Hard to see any way back for Jewell from there. Saying that, Im still (just) behind PJ.

BTW, the idea of Burley doesnt exactly have me excited. I know all about the highs (see earlier Barnsley coment) but talk about lows! £5m for Sereni, £3m for George, one win in 18, relegation, administration, 3-0 loss to grimsby before being sacked. Fortunately we were saved by BFJ. If anyone should come back, it's him

@Garv

Agree with your comments. Especially the chopra comments, at the moment the ball just does not stick to him when he receives it. His control is awful at the moment & yes if he would have jumped he would have scored.

@ErikaTractor - and please don't keep banging on about David Wright, he was that great either, slower than Carlos, weak on the ball and barely ever crossed the half way line - not brilliant in any team. Granted wee don't have a proper right back, but DW isn't the answer!!

It is now sounding like a broken record. Same results, cannot hold onto a lead and now becoming a laughing stock. SEVEN straight defeats and Mr Jewell says we were ' unlucky' but im not one to blame bad luck. It will be even worse luck when we are playing in Division 1. Its an old team and as the season goes on the players will not get any fresher. We cannot defend set pieces FACT and cannot defend a lead. I think it is now Mr Jewell moves on because we need a manager with fresh ideas and maybe someone who is looking to progress in the future. The current playing staff will be gone sooner than later due to age, injuries, etc and hopefully the manager will follow them. Come on Paul Jewell you are talking a good game but do the decent thing Resign now, you are out of your depth now. Thank you and farewell good try but we need a man at the helm who can turn this around.

It wont be long before we are sitting around the TV watching The Great Escape once more at Christmas time. For those of you that think ITFC can pull off a miracle escape of their own you are sadly deluded. You can blather on about what might have been, injuries, bad luck and poor refereeing decisions but a series of pointless results, a clueless manager and a gutless team equals zero points out of a possible twenty one and as each painful minute of each football match passes us by the only thing that is certain is that the club we love will plummet out of the championship. Change please.

Jewell is wrong to say we deserved to win, we deserved a draw at best.

The quality in the Championship is the worst I have ever seen in the 10 seasons since relegation from the premiership and Watford I think will finish in the bottom 6 this season.

Last season you thought it couldn't get worse, but it just has. Like PSGBlue earlier, what most worries me most is this idea of "work in progress." It all started well, with Cresswell coming in, followed by JET. But now, I can see no Plan B at all, no young, hungry players chomping at the bit to come in and change things. We are stuck with what we have right now, but most of the team is temporary and nearly the whole unit will require an overhaul either in January or next year. Is PJ the man to do this? I like PJ, I think he's an honest bloke and I feel for him. I've always supported the manager (even Keano, against my better instincts), but I feel that if we lose either of the next two matches, then the bold decision should be taken. It may well result in the drop to change managers mid-stream - but what are our chances of avoiding the drop at the moment? Anyway, I'm coming over for the Derby match. Will I have difficulty getting a ticket?

ErikaTractor: I can only assume that someone broke into your account! That is the only way I can even begin to understand your totally divergent,no, CONTRADICTORY posts!
Earlier in the day you'd been highly positive about Town's chances and ended with, "In PJ we trust!"
Then you've gone all apocalyptic with your Jewell must go statements.
I can't wait to see what you post tomorrow: Jewell for Prime Minister!
Followed, of course, the day after with:Jewell must stand trial for war crimes!
Please choose a message and then stay on it. Epic lol.

Good post Gary exactly how it is!

No comments on here from the boo boys on why most of the crowd applauded the team off at the end of the match??

Oh my dear god Ipswich fans. If you thought that was a 'good' performance then the days before the regime have obviosuly been forgotton. I thought it was a fairly even game between two poor, poor sides. They should have gone 1-0 up early on when Sordell missed from 6 yards then we would have probably capitulated like we always do. Perhaps it was a 'good' performance compared to the previous non-performances but still wholly unaccetpable as far as this club goes.

Point about Burnley being 4th from bottom and now 10th is the point that that's mainly as a result of thumping us 4-0 lost on you or what?

Just noticed on BBC Gossip, Daily Express comment that Steve Bruce is being linked internally at PR as Jewells replacement, thoughts everyone...
