Bruce Claimed to Be a Town Target
Bruce Claimed to Be a Town Target
Sunday, 4th Dec 2011 10:00

Town view recently sacked Sunderland manager Steve Bruce as a possible replacement for Paul Jewell, according to claims in one of this morning’s tabloids. Bruce, the father of ex-Blue Alex, left the Black Cats after two and a half years this week.

With Town’s run of defeats stretching to seven against Watford on Saturday, names of potential new bosses are starting to surface with Twitter claims of Peterborough’s Darren Ferguson being lined up and former Cardiff boss Dave Jones also rumoured to be a possible successor to Jewell.

Despite the run of losses, owner Marcus Evans gave his backing to the current incumbent on Wednesday, while Jewell ruled out resigning, and a change appears unlikely to be immediately in the offing.

How many defeats in a row until that changes? If we lose the rest of December's games is the above still true? Do we just wait until we're in league 1?

I'd definitely take him, with the SAF connection we might get to buy another quality player of the Lee Martin variety for £2M, and sell another Rhodes to fund it.

If and its a big IF PJ left, why would we want another failure as our manager, surely a young manager starting out who is hungry for success would be better.

Ipswich history shows our successful mangers were Alf Ramsey, Bobby Robson & George Burley, all relatively young all relatively new to management

D Ferguson is an awful, awful manager. Keeps joining teams and sending them down it's beyond me as to why people want him.

The phrase "Out of the frying pan and into the fire" springs to mind. He has failed by bringing in big name players; Bendtner, Brown, O'Shea etc moving downwards in their careers - sound familiar? Surely we have learnt that we need a young ambitious manager from the lower leagues who can bring in good young ambitious players from Leagues 1 and 2 with a couple of old heads (we've got plenty to choose from!). Bruce would not be a good for us. Anyway I'm sure that he will be linked with the Prem jobs that will inevitably be coming up soon, Bolton, Blackburn, Wolves and Wigan for starters. I'm sure this is just lazy journalism - there isn't even a vacancy yet!

'A change appears unlikely to be immediately in the offing'

Let's hope you are wrong. A change MUST be made and now. Seven straight defeats and still people think PJ deserves more time. It's not just this run of results, but also the utter rubbish served up last April (Norwich, Leicester, Swansea, reading and Watford), which spread into the new season - with yet more thrashings (Peterboro and Southampton).

ME and Clegg have to act before attendances and the club fall even further. We need a manager who will build a squad for the future - not one who thinks the average team age should be 32.

If.. and i do mean if we decide a chnage now then its only Curbishley for me. Great track record and is available. I know he said he wanted a prem job but these jobs seem to keep passing him by (i.e Sunderland). I personally still think its a bit early for a change, maybe 2-3 more games. Dont get me wrong i'm not happy with PJ. Anyone who thinks signing Bowyer and Bullard, plus loanee's is part of a 2 year plan needs their head testing. But I have never been a fan of knee jerk reactions.

DAVE JONES! he will get the best out of chopra, and he gets his team to knock the ball round nicely!

Stick with PJ at least until the end of January. This squad has the makings of a good team.

Forget about attendances, this is a problem for the management not posters on this board. The recession will cause attendances to fall whatever happens on the pitch

Steve Bruce can't even be bothered to take 1st team training. If you want what Sunderland has to offer get Eric Black.

Absolutely not... Bruce is an awful manager, I think Ferguson will be a good one in the future, but not right now and no on Dave Jones...

alfromcol added 10:39 - Dec 4
It wouldn't have mattered which manager was sacked last week, the media would have linked them with ITFC!!! That's what the media do, no story, make one up!!

Dave Jones please.

Northern_Branch added 10:47 - Dec 4
Might as well just switch the colours to yellow and green as well and be done with it! Some things just would not work and Bruce as manager would is one of them!

grumpyoldman's comment re: Ramsey, Robson, Burley is very true and even more recent... its not as if another rookie boss, Magilton did a bad job. Although he didn't bring success as such, he got us out of a rut and heading in the right direction, only for RK to dismantle all his hard work and build a crap squad. When the position does become vacant, lets go for another young boss.

And righty's comment re: Lee Clark. Probably not everyone's choice but to me thats not a bad shout
