Jewell: The Longer the Run, The Greater the Pressure
Jewell: The Longer the Run, The Greater the Pressure
Thursday, 8th Dec 2011 18:31

Boss Paul Jewell admits that the longer the run of defeats continues, the more the pressure on him and his players grows. Last week’s home loss to Watford took that run to seven games with the Blues hoping that they can halt their slide when they take on Barnsley in a live Sky game at Oakwell on Saturday (Sky Sports Two/HD2 5pm).

Jewell, who continues to enjoy the backing of owner Marcus Evans and chief executive Simon Clegg, is under no illusions: “The longer you go without winning, the more pressure it puts on the players, manager and everybody to try and get a win.

“But, if you can’t deal with pressure, don’t be a football manager, or a footballer because footballers have to deal with pressure as well.”

While he admits the performance during the recent 4-0 defeat at Turf Moor was well below par, he felt his side were unfortunate during Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Watford: “Against Burnley we were abject, against Watford we were really unlucky. Things didn’t fall for us and the players worked ever so hard.

“I don’t like to blame luck because we’re not in the position we’re in because we’ve been unlucky in all the games, but I felt on Saturday we were desperately unlucky.

“The goals we conceded were bad goals, but at the moment any deflection in the box is falling to one of their players and vice versa at the other end. It’s only us who can get ourselves out of it. We can’t hide, that’s for sure.”

Jewell knows a win has to come soon but feels once one comes, Town, currently 21st, can start climbing the table: “It can turn around very quickly in this league but I understand we can’t keep on losing matches. If you can get one result it can very quickly turn into three or four and everything looks different.”

The 47-year-old concedes that while he has always looked at his Town tenure as a long-term thing, he may have tried to make too many changes at once: "We're trying to build for the future, not just this season. I think one of the mistakes I made was try to cram everything into one year. Longevity is the answer.

"You need to get players who will be here in three to four years and get them settled. Maybe that's one area I haven't got it quite right."

To be fair to Jewell, the team did need radical change when he took over. After spending nearly £11M, Keane's final starting lineup was: Fulop; Brown, McAuley (contract expiring), Delaney, Kennedy; Norris (contract expiring), Livermore (loan), Leadbitter, Colback(loan); Wickham, Fallon (loan). We sold Wickham, but there was no one else of any value in the squad to sell, forcing Jewell to look at more loans and free transfers.

We absolutely need to look long-term. Jewell needs to buy younger players and the clubs needs to invest in a Grade One academy. That will give us a longer term confidence and set us in the right direction.

I revert to my post under the ingi injury.

75% of the current team won't be here next season let alone in 3 to 4 years.

And he said when he was appointed he was going to take his time as one thing he learned at Derby is that he changed things too quickly.

If we had young up and coming players I could buy this but we haven't and not even waiting in the wings. The building blocks will have start again at the end of this season.

Think he is clutching at straws here.

Hope you prove us wrong PJ.

As much as I like Jewell, he's using the same excuses! It's 7 losses in a row, and it's not acceptable! We were the 'dark horses' at the start of the season, and I thought he would do something good. If we loose the next two matches, he has to go, simple! Dave Jones for me, top geezer!<3

Well I don't know. Football management seems to be one of those areas where you need neither to be intelligent nor qualified.

For people saying Jewell out, he wants to get those young players that will be here in 3/4 years time, but good ones dont just appear and can get them on free transfers. It takes time to get those kind of players, and its obvious he's brought older players in to do a job for now until he can build a squad gradually. If he can gradually bring in a few young players around what we have, we'll have a good squad for the future. Its about the long term, and i think Paul Jewell will get it right eventually. COYB!

Hold on. When he took the job he said the thing that attracted him was the fact it was a long term plan, So why go ahead and cram everything in one year when you know the brief. T*t. Anyway, jewell in!

I have faith in jewell .
But the more I think of it I think the club needs one or two
More faces behind the scenes who have more feeling for the club.
Or if pj is replaced maybe it should be by an ex player .
But even though I'm a jewell inner ,he has made mistakes !!
But fair play to him admitting his shortcomings.

And I thought the longer the run, the less pressure that there was ....
"Your name?" "Paul Jewell"
"Occupation?" "Football manager"
"Specialist subject?" "Stating the bleeding obvious"

Get rid.

No sh*t Einstein.! More meaningless rubbish from PJ.
Anyone can see our defence has been dire for months and months, the diamond hasn't worked for months and we've no pace. And after 7 straight losses against poor teams we're supposed to be pleased that he plans to stay long term? What exactly does this clown bring to Portman Road? Oh he's probably still explaining the offside rule to Clegg.Taxi for them both.

"Once one comes (win) Town currently 21st can start climbing the table" - that wouldn't surprise me, historically over the last few seasons when we get close to the dreaded zone we do have a tendancy to win a few on the bounce, and then inconsistancy sets in!
"You need to get 3/4 players settled in who will be here in 3 or 4 years time, maybe that's one area I haven't got right" - no kidding Shelock, you were gambling that the ex-prems were going to get you there this season, 1 gamble that has blown up in your face (so far).
He comes out with some pretty obvious statements sometimes!

Without doubt the worst run in years. But you know what there's no point cribbing Jewell out, went to PR recently place was a morgue, was like playing at the Ricoh "football in a library" stuff. Come on lads get behind the team over the Christmas period. Let's really back them and get the buzz back at Portman Rd. Tractor boys rule. Ham

Scratching my head why Barnsley are 11/10 to win but........

Let's hope the Daily blurb rubbish produces a siege mentality and we get a result.

PJ is fast becoming a later day Tarbuck. He is trying too hard to please and becoming annoying, please for everyone's sake I don't want to be hearing the excuses or the obvious. Don't take us for idiots.

Also not sure what will be acceptable to ME in the next 2 games - so far we are lucky that Cotteril is just as bad as McClaren for Forrest.

Keith Hill has only been the manager at Barnsley since the summer and is doing a fantastic job. I suspect his budget is one of the lowest in the Championship.

His team are playing with pride and passion for their club and they deserve a lot of credit.

I have seen us get some mixed results at Barnsley over the years but on Saturday it has never been more vital that the team get a result at Oakwell.

No more excuses PJ they have all been embarrassing over the last few weeks, it is time for you and the players to wear the Suffolk Punch on the shirt with pride and passion.

The fans deserve nothing less.
