Hyam Set for Colchester
Hyam Set for Colchester
Thursday, 15th Dec 2011 07:50

Midfielder Luke Hyam is understood to be a January transfer window target of Colchester United. The 20-year-old has made only one appearance for Town this season and that came in the Carling Cup defeat to Northampton.

Former Academy scholar Hyam broke into the Blues first team last season under Roy Keane, and has made 12 senior starts and two sub appearances without scoring, but has failed to make an impact under Paul Jewell. Hyam’s one-year contract with Town is up at the end of the season.

Fellow midfielder Jamie Griffiths is already training with the U’s with a view to joining them when his contract is up at the end of the month.

Probably a good move for Colchester and Hyam, not sure if this one would come back and bite us in the ars3 or not tho

Started season very well at DM last year and looked very promising. All year we've been crying out for a holding midfielder but he doesn't get a chance. We might as well close the academy

Can someone please tell me what the f**k is going on at this football club!!? Young players out, old under performing players on big wages in. Loanees using the club as a spring board, an elusive chairman using the club as a marketing machine, so many of the wrong records broken over the last 5 seasons, 7 straight losses (one of the worst runs in out history)...

Not acceptable and i've had enough.

Very sad if he does go. Looked promising under keane yet not given a chance under jewell even when he played 4-5-1. What hope does that give other youngsters at this club.

Will youth ever be given a chance under jewell?

Would be a sad day if we let another promising youngster leave - why has PJ not given him a chance ?

He wouldn't do any worse than some of our so-called big name midfielders !

This just staggers me. I saw Hyam play last year and never let the side down. He does the simple stuff well - foot in, pick a pass and stay disciplined. We won games under Keane using him and then it all went wrong.
I'd rather watch my own players being developed than some journeyman has-been and certainly don't think any player has been given a chance unless theyv'e been in the team or bench for ten or more games in a row.
Trotter, Rhodes, Barron - all playing at or about our level elsewhere. I hate my football club at the moment.

Will be absolutely disgusted if Hyam goes. All our senior midfield players, yes even Keith Andrews, have been anonymous at times, gone missing, let the opposition waltz through our middle etc. With this in mind it will be an absolutely disgusting decision if such a promising youngster is allowed to leave the club.

Why are we getting rid of the young talent that we will need when all the 30+ has beens have cleared off? These are the players that will get us out of the Div 1 next season.

I remember Hyam's marvellous performance at Crystal Palace only at the beginning of last season. I thought we had a star in the making.

What is going on?

Think we need to show our voices on Saturday in support of hyam et al cos it appears that as fans we are being walked over.

Higher prices, no progress, no youth, same old excuses from compo and jewell. We really are getting a raw deal at the moment and how can that encourage any new fans from coming to PR.

As fans I think we are too polite and don't voice true feelings at home games. We will be here long after Evans and clegg and jewell that's for sure.

It would be sad if Hyam did go permanently. Can't we send him there on loan for the second half of the season, see how he goes and how he comes back. But, we don't see what goes on in training. Who knows how he has developed, of otherwise. Perhaps he has gone backwards...

On youth not being given a chance, it clearly is. Wickham last year, Cresswell, Carson and JET to a lesser extent.

Depite its reputation, our academy produces a gem only once in a long while. Over last fifteen years, the only quality players we have produced are Dyer, Bramble, Wright, Bent, Ambrose and Wickham. So out of about 150 players going through the academy, the vast majority are not good enough to play at Championship level or higher.

In recent years, you can make the argument that Trotter, Billy Clarke and Rhodes should have been retained, the latter is certainly looking like a regretted loss, the former two arguably no better than what we have today. But apart from them how many players have we really let go and regretted?

ALL I can say is that Jewell must have some damn good players lined up in Jan.
A big part of the team will have gone in a fortnight, ie Andrews, Collins Wabara as we know, with Stockdale already gone.
Will Murphy still be about ????

would the last one out of the Academy close the door. The message is that Town arent interested in youth any more!
I agree with many that Luke played well enough until he got injured and deserved his chance again but ofr some reason PJ likes 30+ in the midfield. Great shame if he is off as i'd play him before Bowyer every time. This is Rhodes all over again and we will regret it in the future.

Rarley post, but this story has me furious!!!
It reaks of Rhodes all over again, this kid will leave, get a run in the Colchester team (they need all the help they can get!), then get a move to the premier league, i also think that he will get international honours in the future. Now that may bea large statement, but the role he plays DM, is reliant on brains and experiance, he is only going to get better, in the few reserves games we have had this year he has done anything asked him and done them well. FURIOUS!

I agree with playing youngsters whenever possible, but after his promising start for Ipswich both Keane and Jewell decided not to pick him for the team and perhaps that tells us something. Hyam was dreadful in the Northampton match and was substituted at half time I believe. The coaching staff see him every day and I trust their judgement, so if they let Hyam go so be it. The important thing for me is to bring in new young players who are good enough for the first team, and to develop the talent we have when it is good enough.

Grade One academy please!

PJ and his coaching team see these players nearly every day. I am happy to accept their decisions on who merits first team selection and who does not. Clearly in their view Hyam at this stage does not. You can't pick a team on what someone did 6 months or more ago.

If Hyam was good enough he would be in the team. Perhaps if the team begins to win more regularly and plays with more confidence more of the younger players will get a chance? Does their confidence no good to be thrown into a team that is losing every week.

Read Phil's post --- He is only a TARGET OF COL U not being got rid of by ITFC

Good luck to you Luke you were never given a chance here and never will under the muppet we have managing us now some of us know what you can do - but you can come back in your retirement and we will pay you big money to do f*** all. Will not attend PR again under current management he is a waste of space who has ruined this club beyond belief in less than a year. ME you must be very proud

Agree with al those in favour of keeping this very promising lad who has a great future in the game. Come on, PJ, be strong and make a bold decision to give this lad a chance
