Skipper Leadbitter Still in Jewell's Plans
Skipper Leadbitter Still in Jewell's Plans
Wednesday, 28th Dec 2011 09:15

Town boss Paul Jewell insists that nothing ought to be read into skipper Grant Leadbitter being left out of the 16 since his return from his groin injury. The midfielder's contract is up in the summer with no new deal yet in place and the £2.65 million 2009 signing from Sunderland's recent absence from the squad had led to speculation that he was set to be sold in January.

Jewell says that with only five subs available in the Championship there are always going to be players disappointed: “Grant and Josh Carson can count themselves unlucky.

“People play themselves into the squad [in training], but also, as a manager, you look at the game and think about what might pan out, what might be the best for you.

“It might have been better if Grant had been on the bench at Leicester as we might possibly have changed our system in the second half a little, but there you go.”

Jimmy Bullard replaced the injured Keith Andrews at the King Power Stadium and might be seen as the favourite to start alongside Lee Bowyer in central midfield at Reading with the Irishman likely to be sidelined for the remainder of his half-season loan from Blackburn.

Leadbitter, who turned down Town's initial contract offer early in the season having been the subject of a bid from Portsmouth in the summer, could well be back in the 16 even if he doesn’t return to the starting XI.

Change our system with Leadbitter on the bench playing a 4-4-2? That would mean the diamond then...

A few things about team selection:

Is Peters a better right back than Edwards? Yes.

Is Edwards a better wide midfielder than Martin? Yes

Is Hyam a better option on the bench than Leadbitter given Leadbitter's contract is coming to an end, he's rejected a new contract and he's been poor for 2 years? Yes

Are O'Connor or Carson better options as wide midfielders than Murphy? Yes

Is Murray a better option on the bench than Elington given Elington is a very similar player t Scotland? Yes

All of these above points make perfect sense to most town fans...so why not to the management? Not interested in talking too much about Leadbitter, he's gone as far as we're all concerned i think unless a stint out of the side has given him the fire he needs to start playing well.

I have to say that Keaneish the above poster has hit the nail on the head with several good points. How come if we can see it Jewell cant or wont. I would love to see more youth bought into the team, but its a dangerous thing to bring in kids when we were on a massive losing streak.

Very, very expensive buy, well over priced for an average midfielder who actually contributes very little in terms of attacking play, its pretty obvious why Jewell has said this as he knows there are likely to be very few takers in January given his poor form, and the likely scenario is a free transfer come June.

Bluelady yes - Leadbitter has been very poor in the past year and a bit. I stick by my comment that Drury was a poor buy though. People slagged Roy off for signing Healy (£50K) - who IMO was a better buy than Drury (£150K) - who despite one good game was clearly out of his depth. We must also remember that it was PJ who re-signed Healy on a two year deal, before falling out with him and releasing him (costing the club money). Leadbitter was actually one of our better players in Roy's first year - people on here were raving about him - he has however been disappointing since - although it should be noted that PJ went through a stage of playing him out of position on the left.

If you wish to compare similar money signings - how about PJ's signing of JET (£2M - with appearances)? It would seem you think everything PJ does is brilliant - yet ignore he has also made some very very poor signings, delivered the WORST run of results since 94/95 (PL season) along with some humiliating hammerings. Also, for the last time Roy was rightly sacked - move on. PJ is in charge and has been for almost a year. It's about PJ now - not Roy, Jim or anyone else. The reality is we sit 19th in the league - PJ has brought in 16 new players and we are no better off - ironically it is PJ who constantly returns to Roy's signings because his are hopeless (delaney instead of Ingimarrson; Scotland instead of Ellington; Edwards at Right-back; ALB in goal; and yes Leadbitter as PJ's CHOSEN captain!!).

Following on from brittania man, and the £1.7M for priskin, £1M+ for Edwards, £1M+ for Martin, £750k for fullop, £750k for Scotland, and fees for delaney and healy.

Can see why PJ hasn't got a lot of money.

And I won't mention Rhodes.

And we bang on about Jet being consistent, this guy has had one good game in the last two seasons, yet up until his injury was always played and even made captain, baffling!

Keanish - good post. I think most fans agree with those points. Now that our season appears to be drifting into mediocrity we would all love to see the younger players like Hyam, Peters, O'connor at least given a chance but sadly i fear these guys will stay in the background and slowly get shipped off.

Permenant signings over 30, short term loans and youngsters being shut out, i fail to see how our club is moving forward. I would happily settle for a mid-lower table finish if our regular starting line-up feature a majority of under 25s and we were giving them time and a chance to gel for the next 3-4 years.

I posted on here earlier but the comment did not appear?!

In summary, I wrote we should withdraw the contract offer from Leadbitter and sell him, as ignoring penalties even Geraint Williams would be ashamed of his goalscoring record.

I was also amused to read a defence of Roy Keane using Colin Healy as an argument to defend him. :-) Keane caused such damage to this club and wasted £11M on fees and goodness knows how much on wages, so we cannot just swipe that aside and blame Jewell for everything. Jewell as only spent £3M on fees remember.

I did say 'most' Town fans Kendubz, there are always the odd few who beg to differ as well as fail to read posts properly! Not entirely sure which one of those points you can contest though, I think they're fairly black and white to all.

Peters was unused sub for Bournemouth towards. Keaneish we're in big trouble if you think he's the answer.

Keaneish added 12:47 - Dec 28
I think he's better than Edwards at right back and Edwards would be better played in midfield. Goes without saying we should buy a new right back and should never have let David Wright go, especially given his versatility.

groovyASH added 12:58 - Dec 28
You might think so Keanish, but you don't work with the guy day-in and day-out, so you can't possibly say he is a better right-back than Edwards; Peters was poor at right-back, he would never win a header, was almost always caught out, and yes, if he can't get into the starting 11 of a league 1 side then I would question your declaration that he should be our right-back ahead of Edwards.

Keane ruined this club, wasted big money on Leadbitter, Fullop, Priskin to name a few, sold Rhodes and Walters, sacked some great coaches, who ever took over from him would have problems.

Keaneish added 13:06 - Dec 28
Based on first team performances in a town shirt i stand by the fact that Peters is a better right back than Edwards and Edwards is wasted playing in that role.

Given the age difference, i'd rather see Peter's learn and grow in that role than Edwards come to the end of his career in a role he's not best suited to.
