Newcastle's Smith Linked
Newcastle's Smith Linked
Monday, 2nd Jan 2012 23:03

Town have been linked with a move for Newcastle midfielder Alan Smith. The 31-year-old former striker, who was recently mentioned in connection with a return to his hometown club Leeds, could be released by the Magpies in the next few days having made only two appearances this season.

A holding midfielder in the mould of ex-Manchester United and England man Smith has been on Paul Jewell’s wish list since the summer.

Jewell has previously said he’ll be targeting “young, hungry” players in January but the Blues boss could well be interested in someone of Smith’s pedigree, although his likely wage demands would appear to be challenging to any Championship club.

The 5ft 10in tall Yorkshireman could have his Newcastle contract cancelled by mutual consent due to his lack of involvement to allow him to find a new club in January, although manager Alan Pardew may choose to hang on to the 19-times capped England international until he has added to his squad.

Smith joined Newcastle from Manchester United in August 2007 for £6 million, having signed for the Red Devils for £7 million from Leeds in May 2004.

Meanwhile, former Blues boss Jim Magilton is reported to have been approached by Derry City regarding the managerial vacancy at the League of Ireland club.

No thanks.

Was only ever any good as a striker, before the ankle injury finished him.

I would suggest it is speculation based on the fact that we have rooms available at the retirement home.

Here we go again, another has-been. Jewell recently said he was looking to sign younger players here for the longer haul. That's not Alan Smith.

Just watched Norwich win again on MOTD and wonder if we will ever appear on that programme again? It is going to be a very long time at this rate.

I thought that Sussex was where old people retired to....obviously its now ITFC.

I've always defended PJ especially when Jas0999 had criticised him but now Im not so sure. But with Clown Master Clegg in control, if we do appoint a great manager then it would of been by accident rather than by sound judgement.

Clown Master Clegg please go

Just paper talk, but if it is not then I am sorely worried.

@bigfish - haha!

Wow... Jewell do us all a favor and strengthen the defense first. But yet again he is looking for players over 30? At this rate we will have no young players left.

Good lord, a decent player maybe, but also old, injury prone and would hardly revitalise a floundering squad. He's the kind of player you'd want as that experienced battler in a team of relative youth, i.e not what we want.

Beginning to suspect PJ was born up the A140 instead of in the land of scouse as advertised.

Old, wannabe has beens wanted. We'll pay over the odds, give you no coaching, expect no effort and we'll even through in a Sun Life over 50 retirement plan for free.

OMG I just cannot believe I am reading this, a good player in his day, only trouble is that was long ago.
What happened to building for the future, I was a big fan of PJ's appointment after the Keane era, but I have to say the man's decision making, if this is true, is turning us into a not very funny version of Dad's Army!!
I love Town and I love football, just wish the people associated with this club did!!!

On a lighter note Phil your advertising s apt and it works. I've just asked Ultralase to temporarily damage my eyes and insert Rose tinted lenses, I also have rung claims direct and they are representing me in a shocking case of mis selling. They have asked me to put the word out to season ticket holders and anyone who has been within 300 yards of entering PR this season.

This can only mean we've said goodbye to Andrews, I know who I'd rather have in the team.
