Clegg Disappointed With Leicester Change of Heart
Clegg Disappointed With Leicester Change of Heart

Chief Executive Simon Clegg admits that he is disappointed that Leicester City called off the Blues’ move for defender Sean St Ledger at the last minute. The Foxes need the Irishman as defensive cover with John Pantsil and Sol Bamba away at the Africa Cup of Nations from Saturday.

Clegg said: “I am bitterly disappointed. We expected Sean to be in the team for the Birmingham game but I got a call on Wednesday morning saying it was off.”

Speaking after Wednesday’s game at Birmingham, manager Paul Jewell said Leicester had told him they need St Ledger for Tuesday’s FA Cup replay with Nottingham Forest and it may be that the 27-year-old becomes available at some point later in the month. Town may have turned their interest elsewhere by then, however.

Leicester assistant manager Craig Shakespeare says his club need to cover themselves: “Paul Jewell had registered an interest in Sean but I don’t know how near he was to joining them, but with him being a defender we have to cover ourselves here.

“Whether the situation will change in a week, two weeks before the deadline finishes, then who knows?”

Meanwhile, on the subject of yesterday’s short-lived furore regarding Paul Jewell’s Birmingham comments about assistant referee Amy Hearn, Clegg said: “We back the manager wholeheartedly and we would be very surprised if anyone who heard the interview took issue.

“There is nothing for Paul to apologise about. Sometimes you make a mistake and put your hands up and apologise — but there is no mistake here.”

A club spokesman dismissed claims elsewhere that Clegg had put pressure on Jewell to apologise as "nonsense".

Fearn herself is reported to have told friends that she was not offended by the comments.

Warkys tash, I don't understand why yourself and many others are calling for Sheepshanks back, like many also would like to see Burley back as manager. Do you forget that it was Sheepshanks lavish spending on stadium redevolpment (all done too quickly) and allowing Burley too much money to spend that got us into the debt that we're still currnetly in (albeit to Evans and not the banks now)
Instead of signing a few of the good players we were linked with 11 years ago after finishing 5th he chose to overcommit the club by budgeting for stadium buildings which were only sustainable if we'd stayed in the Premier League and allowing Burley to spend the majority of our transfer budget that season on a sulky keeper and a ageing attacker. That was what put us into the first mess, which resulted in admistration and selling our best assets for next to nothing compared to the original purchase price and maybe if the debt hadn't been such a burden, Royle would have had some money to spend and no doubt would have taken us to the Premier League as he nearly did with hardly any spending at all.

Buryblue - couldnt agree more! It was also down to the stadium redevelopment that our ground now has no atmosphere of any sort these days! The little north stand used to litterally rock at every home game causing the rest of the ground to join in and in turn encouraging our players to thrive.

Now its just depressing.

Buryblue77, you are spot on. We have never truly recovered from the poor financial decisions of the early part of last decade.

As for SSL, I can't say I am that bothered that we have missed out as he seems to attract rather mixed comments from people who have seen him play. However, the hunt for more CBs (and a RB) must be stepped up.

the only problem with our defence is that we have decent CB's but they need to be marshalled.look back at our defences devos ,mogga ran our back four, macauley took a lot of responsibility off who delaney doesnt seem to play well being the main man in the back four.sonko is a good signing for us but he doesnt look like he is organising whats around around him. it looks to me that job has fallen to carlos who is for me our best defender.

Moosejuice, spot on used to love the old North Stand best atmosphere ever, the 'nutters' up there got us all going. I used to be slightly wary of heading up that end, so always used to get tickets in other parts of the ground but when I went in with a new work mate I got my first taste of it and loved it.
Whittonite, good points, put a good defender alongside Delany or Sonko and they'er good, don't think either of them take responsibility well. McAuley was good, but De Vos was our last really good CB and leader.

The vague Leicester response makes me think St Ledger has gone back to Leicester and said no and asked them to make an excuse for him.
And if he doesn't want to come good riddun's.Lets move on.
Jewell/Clegg both think Plan B is a pop group!

I suspect SSL simply doesn't want to play for a managare who like a vast number of Town fans thinks should have been sacked long ago. What I want to know is where are the permanent signings and the Plan B? It's utterly shambolic that 13 days into the transfer window and we only have a LOAN goalkeeper to show for it. Clegg and PJ OUT
