Experimental Price Cut for Middlesbrough Clash
Experimental Price Cut for Middlesbrough Clash
Thursday, 19th Jan 2012 11:05

Town have reduced prices for the home game with Middlesbrough by 25% in what they describe as “a major ticketing trial”. Fans have been critical of high matchday prices for the last few seasons.

Adult prices for the match on Saturday 11th February have been set from £20, the lowest matchday price since the 2004/05 season.

Chief executive Simon Clegg says the initiative is an experiment which could have a bearing on next season’s prices: "Gate receipts are a vitally important revenue stream and the ticket office manager and I spend a lot of time trying to maximise these to decrease the gap between over-expenditure and income.

"The Middlesbrough game is a deliberate trial to measure the effect on volumes and revenues. I hope that many Town fans will take up this great offer as it could influence our thinking on future ticket pricing strategy."

Ticket office manager John Ford added: "These will be our cheapest League prices for seven years and I hope the supporters will take advantage of what we think is a fantastic offer."

A very good step in the right direction, more bums on seats, PR rocking. To ascertain the full effect of any potential price reduction I would suggest doing 3 or 4 games...word will get out. Better still how about the West Ham game, when we will need the place load n rocking...

I have a ST and yes i would like my ticket to be cheaper but i was the idiot who bought it so its my problem. Whats more worrying to me is are they testing out the offer because that will be the price next year when relegated

Annoys me to hear season ticket holders moaning about this and having a pop at the "part time" supporters. I AM a season ticket holder in Sir Bobby Lower and am happy at the thought of a fuller stadium / better atmosphere and hopefully increased income for the club i love!! isnt that the point? it benefits the team all round. Yes we pay for a whole season and miss out on the benefits but if you put it into £££ terms. How much are we actually losing out as Season ticket holders by missing a one off deal like this? no a big deal really. I think its a positive move. Well done ITFC for taking the step to try something new!!

Just a couple of points.

1. I hope those who take advantage of the reduced ticket price enjoy the game as we season ticket holders will be subsidising them.
2. To a true supporter, nothing is more important than football!!

Clueless Clegg, again.

Not everyone can afford season tickets and for me its a 200 mile round trip to go and with the price of petrol its an expencive day.

The cost for me to go to one match is the same most pay for 3 to 4 matches.
Midweek games I cant make as I work till 8 o'clock unless I book holiday some Saturdays I work and as one post put on here they are busy that day.

So just because your are a season ticket holder does not make you better than those that cant make every match.
If its based on the fact of the cost of a season ticket, then those that travil to matches and pay full price will pay out more by going to 10 matches a season.

So that makes them more of a true fan than the righteous Season Ticket holders

Will Season ticket holders get some money refunded? Doubt it....

As a season ticket holder I TOTALLY SUPPORT this idea and I hope it becomes permanent. I pay £21-a-game on my season ticket and a match ticket costs between £32 to £37 in my block. A 25% reduction would take this down to £24 to £28, which I think is a fairer permanent price for match tickets. Season ticket holders are still making a good saving on the game.

To those season ticket holders moaning about this, you are getting over a 50% discount on this match anyway so why complain about other people getting 25%? Do you not want to see a fuller stadium with a better atmosphere, with more people cheering on the team meaning a greater chance of winning?

Remember, the match day ticket holders of today are in many cases the season ticket holders of tomorrow. I started supporting Town by buying match tickets when money was tight, and had prices been as high as they are now I might not have been able to afford to go, and might therefore not be a season ticket holder for all the years I have been since.

"2. To a true supporter, nothing is more important than football!!"

So if I want to be considered a true support my wife, kids and jobs have to take a backseat to a GAME?

There are many reasons why people cannot attend football regularly. I am an ex-season ticket holder who travels from Berkshire to Portman Road whenever I can. I'd love to have a season ticket again but contact arrangement with my kids prevent me from being able to attend many matches. A season ticket is just not worth it. I am in no way a fairweather supporter and I resent the attitude displayed by some that this is the case.

I fully support this initiative by the Club to experiment with it's elasticity of demand re: pricing and total revenue. They may indeed learn something about their pricing structure. But they can't please everyone can they?

The fans at Portman Road need to do their bit too. The 12th man in the stand at home games must be heard - as frankly the 11 on the pitch seem to need all the help they can get.

So now it's up to us.
Let's all get in there and make some noise! COME ON YOU BLUES!!!

Now Clegg here this:

What needs to happen next season is this:

Season ticket prices frozen
Match Day tickets at ST + around 30%
ST holders can buy match day tickets at a 10% discount any time.
12 month rolling direct debit starting May 1st and automatically renewed every year, like car insurance.

ST holders get over yourselves its 25% of of one game its a few quid, when compared to the overall price of your ticket its not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things. anyway at least they are trying something and i hope people take advantage, as for me well, i wont be there.

Well said MathieandMarshall and Mark. I totally agree. Leicester had a £10 offer for the next home game for those supporters with an Ipswich ticket stub AND a £20 ticket for a family of 4 (2 adults,2 children) .Their ground was packed and the atmosphere was terrific. As a season ticket holder with a round trip of 250 miles I would much rather be watching ITFC with crowds of 20,000+.

Tractorboy24 added 13:05 - Jan 19
Surely those ST holders moaning realise that if the gate for this match increases considerably, and it convinces the board to drop prices in an attempt to bring more people in, it will have an effect on the ST prices next year, which you can benefit from!

As for the 'true fans' comment about ST holders, grow up!

A few quid here and there make very little difference. Cheaper season tickets might add a few hundred sales. The only thing that makes a real difference is entertainment, and success, and we've had precious little of that over the last few years. Whatever the prices are (within reason), the ground will be full, if we're top of the league, scoring goals and playing entertaining football

As a season ticket holder I don't mind at all , as effectively I'm paying around that price per game anyway. The more the merrier as far as I'm concerned. Rather than refund me a fiver or whatever for this game I'd rather they put it towards a new signing.

(And I do realise that a fiver doesn't buy you much of a player these days...)

RegencyBlue added 13:28 - Jan 19
It will be interesting to see what this puts on the gate and what criteria the Club will use to decide whether it has been a success or not.

Am I sensing from some of you that no matter what this club or staff do, some of you might always disagree and be a little unhappy? Not sure why I get that impression, just a stab in the dark. Anyone else sense that?
0

Steve_ITFC_Sweden added 13:40 - Jan 19
This is a step in the right direction, even though there is an implicit element of holding the fans to ransom ("We make you this offer and the gates still don't improve enough, so our high prices are inevitable.) I've heard (unconvincing) arguments from the powers that be for not lowering the prices, but it looks as if economic reality has finally made the club see sense. Get more fans in, create more atmosphere and interest around the club: this is the way to build for the future.

Right moaning SEASON TICKET HOLDERS, listen up and listen good!

Instead of moaning about your raw deals, get on the phone/email/facebook/twitter and tell every lapsed/part time town fan you know to get a ticket for this game.

The end result 'could' be this:
1. A sell out with a fantastic atmosphere that drives the team to victory
2. A clear message to the board that reduced ticket prices will get people back in the ground

When you have these stats you go back to the club with Revenue figures for a full season with inflated crowds at lower prices and recommend that some of this increased revenue be off set against reduced season ticket prices going forward.

If the club increase gate revenues in this manner and still don't reduce Season ticket prices then moan away.

I a season ticket holder who had great hopes for this and I have been let down terribly watched total rubbish all season i have no problem with paying my ST IF I GET VALUE FOR MONEY

no doubt it's jewells fault there are not these price reductions every game, some fans will never be happy it seems. i am a season ticket holder and i would rather a massive atmosphere -like arsenal at home or norwich at home (till we conceded!)-nthan a few quid back, unfortuantely will not be able to make this match as on a school holiday but hope they do this idea more often
