Second Bid for Portsmouth Duo Turned Down
Second Bid for Portsmouth Duo Turned Down
Monday, 23rd Jan 2012 16:37

Portsmouth have rejected Town’s second offer for Joel Ward (pictured) and Jason Pearce, according to reports on the south coast. The Blues made an increased bid, which we understand to have been £1.6 million, earlier today having had their initial offer - reportedly £1 million - rebuffed last week.

Town will now have to decide whether to make a third bid to the cash-strapped club or look at other targets.

However, given Pompey's ongoing financial concerns and manager Michael Appleton's admission that player sales are on the cards, it seems likely that the Blues will continue to pursue the matter.

It's understood that Town have not yet made a new bid for 17-year-old Crewe midfielder Nick Powell.

Three points Guentchev!!

Maybe we should stick to 4-4-blooming-2.

Quite right about the influence of new faces. If the infrastructure isn't right then the value of new acquisitions and existing talent will never be realised. It's not just a team game on the pitch, off pitch is so critical too.

Sadly, I don't know much about either in footballing terms!

This may run and run....they're desparate for cash and we're desparate for decent defenders, come on Clegg do something right for once!

Maybe we will just make do with just Pearce at the moment. We do still need a RB but the CH vacancy is the more desperate situation.

PJ DOES NOT RUN THE BUSINESS SIDE OF THE CLUB, TOO MANY PEOPLE ON HERE THINK THAT REAL FOOTBALL IS THE SAME AS CHAMPIONSHIP MANAGER!!!!! HE IDENTIFIES THE TARGET AND CLEGG HANDLES FINANCES, SORRY TO THOSE WHO GET IT, BUT I FEEL THE NEED TO SHOUT AS SOME ON HERE HAVE SO LITTLE UNDERSTANDING IT DRIVES ME FCUKIN BONKERS!!!!!

Surely we're not in for just 2 at a time? If I was manager, and I know I'm not qualified, but I'd be enquiring after 3 or 4 people for each position, and bidding for them too. Get offers accepted on as many as possible, then work out where you want to go from there.

Tick tock Mr Jewell.

We are a shambles, as others have said teams like Norwich identify their targets in private and when is out in open they are signed the next day. Even Leicester just brought Drinkwater from Man Utd just came out of nowhere and he was signed. But oh no not with that clown Clegg can only attract old has beens for one last pay day.

I'm speechless really.

Got nothing good to say about ITFC At the moment.

If we sign no one (which looks possible) who's going to protest?
We have got to help save our club.
This week is a massive week.
SIMON CLEGG JOG ON AND TAKE USELESS PORNO PAUL WITH YA.

Well said Ipswich24.
We should have many more buns in the oven right now. PJ should have identified other CD targets that we should also be bidding for. At the moment its like an "ALL OR NOTHING" situation with the cards firmly in Portsmouths hands. If they don't give us a decent price, move on. Its unbelievably short-sighted of Jewell to think that we should only get these players. He has made Clegg's life much more difficult by putting him in this situation. Clubs know we have money to burn.
Why not look abroad for once? For 2m we could be getting 2 fringe players from Benfica. Fair enough, would be difficult to attract them (would have to do-life in England etc) but that does put it in perspective.
We need a new manager and soon. Hopeless, like Mike Bassett.
Then again, weren't Mike Bassetts made-up stats actually better than PJ's abysmal record with us (48% losses)

Will some of you people get a fecking grip! Just because Portsmouth are in a tricky situation doesn't mean they are going to roll over and give up their players for peanuts. Likewise just because we need players we shouldn't be held to ransom. Let the deal run its course and if it can be done it will be done. Some of you are complete idiots. Hysterical behaviour isn't going to get us out of this.

You could make a film about how bad we are, seriously.
Call it "Glory Glory Ipswich Town". Start it with the sacking of Jim Magilton (I voiced from the start that that was a terrible move). Move through the Keane years and our classic signings (Leadboots, Delaney etc) , getting rid of our youngters for next to nothing (Rhodes etc) and then through to PJ's reign which just seems to get worse and worse.
I hate to say it, but I think we were better under Keane.

Think Marcus needs to sort this mess out sooner rather than later..he obviously gets on well with Jewell - he is a likeable guy - but that's not going to keep us up..

At the end of the day he's had a year to put a team together and just look at the shambles we're in..bringing in yet more players now is almost like putting a sticking plaster on a severed head..Jewell & his staff are not capable of setting out a team who can defend..we're letting in 3 goals+ regularly and I can't see that ending until someone with a footballing brain takes charge of our club (Carlos Edwards has been playing in defence for a year now - unbelievable!)

I fear the worst..the more i've thought about it the more I like the idea of giving the job to Darren Ferguson..young,hungry,done a great job with no money at peterborough..we need a kick start cos the only way we're heading with this lot in charge is league 1.

I have been supporting ipswich for the last 25 or so years and never in that time have i felt so ashamed of my club - it seems that they have no direction - money is getting waisted hand over fist - we have no class when it comes to dealing with transfers - it would be great if we kept quiet until the deal is sealed!! no need for the disgrace of a manager to pipe up with waist of time comments upsetting other clubs. why not offer younger players longer contracts - they are on small money compared to the so called stars - and some will eventually develop into assests. All I want to see is a well run club full of players who honour the supporters with their maximum effort in both training and on the pitch. Tony Mowbray - is doing a great job for middlesbro and Norwich have come from behind us to blow us out of the water!!! Any way - the sooner some real planning a stratergy goes into our club the better!!! Jewell out - someone with long term plan in

Well said Bury_Blue77. Some of the comments on here are just Mornic, from low educated so called fans who prefer to fight amongst themselves in a once Proud North Stand (that used to make up great chants and songs for our players, but now just Boo!!)

How is it Jewell's fault if a 2nd offer is turned down? No-one on here knows the details of the offer. SO WHY COMMENT??!

To be fair to Jewell and Clegg (THIS ONE TIME) i think for a player they signed for £300k only 5 months ago and a player who has done pretty much nothing in the championship that £1.6m is a very fair offer! What annoys me is how they can reject the bid, didn't see the administrators being so fair to us when clubs bid pennies for Hreidarsson, Stewart, Holland etc!

iamipswich added 23:25 - Jan 23
To be fair, prior to this bid everyone was telling paul to put in a bid of 1.6 mill and it appears thats what he has done yet it has still been rejected. so actually PJ has only done the same thing that we would have done in his situation. im not a fan personally of paul but get off his back for this

Lightningboy==A good idea about bringing in Darren Ferguson. He would have the "network" of Sir Alex to play with too.
We need to gain a sense of perspective. Sonko was APPALLING in his last game for us but he was fine next to Collins. I think he was having to work too hard in his position as Smith has never been Championship Quality. When you play alongside a poorer player it puts extra pressure on which leads to mistakes. Smith and Delaney are League 2 footballers. Sonko is a solid Championship defender. Please give him the benefit of the doubt and let him play alongside someone who is also Championship quality (this obviously requires a new signing). Need to get rid of our coaching staff, get in new. Ellington, Kennedy, Leadbitter= transfer list. Whight can play back-up for Cresswell. If Portsmouth won't play ball, let them go into adminstration and be docked 10 points (they may well end up being the team relegated instead of us). Buy in quality signings from abroad (centre half, right back). Invest in Nick Powell, he has serious potential and if we get him for 3m now we might well be selling him for 6m in 2 years time. Get Chopra back up and running, snap him back into shape. He's a professional footballer and has been a quality player the last few seasons. Keep playing Carson, Martin, Hyam, Drury etc, give them experience in the game. Use the wise old heads of Bowyer and Bullard to help them learn the game. Make a new Captain (hopefully Leadbitter is sold by then). Send Mccarthy back to reading and bring in somebody with experience between the posts (still think Richard Wright is good for the job).Scott Loach would be worth the investment too- he actually wants to play for us!
Paul Jewell is going nowhere. We need to learn to accept that. And as for those fans who are constantly saying "Well, they have to listen to the fans". Really? Our club hasn't listened to the fans since Keane took over.

PJewellisaGod...yes Sonko needs someone with a brain to play alongside...and while I have hopes for Tommy he is not the finished article yet. McCarthy's little adventure outside the box didn't make too muaCJ

McCarthy's little adventure outside the box didn't make too much sense. For those that didn't see our blunders here are the highlights. We need at least one CB, a RB and a permanent GK. We've been saying this for a long time now.

What i'd like to know is why did we get rid of Magilton. He had passion for the club so obviously he would of been a great manager. Got us up near the play-offs and Evans goes and sacks him. He brang such good players too! Giovanni Dos Santos, one of them!
