Smith to Miss New Zealand Olympics Qualifiers
Smith to Miss New Zealand Olympics Qualifiers
Friday, 27th Jan 2012 12:16

The Olympic Games in London later this year remain a realistic target for Town defender Tommy Smith — but New Zealand will have to qualify without him.

If the Kiwis do make it to the final stages he would like nothing more than to represent his adopted country, having emigrated there at a young age.

But he explained: “Olympic qualifying is taking place in March and I won’t be able to play. The manager is not going to release me because it is not in the FIFA window and I would miss five Ipswich games.

“I’m okay with that. Ipswich pay my wages, it’s my bread and butter, so I understand that. There is a friendly [against Jamaica] next month and I could play in that one.”

Smith has won eight full caps with New Zealand with the Olympic competition featuring U23 teams. Town keeper Cody Cropper could also be involved in London 2012 with the US squad.

Time to consider international retirement after the Olympics perhaps? Playing for New Zealand isn't a very good selling point if he wants to find a new club in the summer.

I think smith could be a good defender but he looks like he has no confidence in himself at all i think a couple of decent performances with no mistakes an he could hopefully be a quality defender we need? i like him and he seems very committed as do most of the fringe players at town!

I wouldn't have thought Tommy was eligible for Miss New Zealand.

Keep on defending like he did for the third goal last week, and he will be selling ice creams at the Olympics!

@FenBoyBlue

The actual 'Miss New Zealand' might be a realistic transfer target before the month is out.

Had heard that she has many good sides to her game and has a perfectly sculptered Hakka. . . .

In the WC game against Italy he was one of the best on the field that day - if he refinds that form he could be very important for us. Mayby he needs a longer run than given recently?

Everyone knows Miss New Zealand is Baaaabra the sheep! Tommys got nothing on her. Be good to see him in the Olympic side though, as mentioned above he was immense against Italy, Jewel should see if Nelsen is up for loan when he recovers from injury, they seem to play well together!

You can't fault his effort and commitment. BUT at the moment is not good enough - albeit better than PJ's answer - Ingimarrsson!
