Jewell Delighted With Performance As Well As Win
Jewell Delighted With Performance As Well As Win
Tuesday, 31st Jan 2012 22:50

Town boss Paul Jewell was delighted with his side’s performance as well as their win after West Ham were beaten 5-1 at Portman Road.

Jewell said: “It’s nice to get a result but when you get a performance as well, it’s all the sweeter. They’re a good team, West Ham, they’ll get promoted, I’ve no doubt about that.

“We started the game well, although we rode our luck from one or two set plays. I think it was a victory for hard work and determination. We worked exceptionally hard.

“Our last two games against Blackpool and Leeds, we were the same — we hunted in packs and we set about West Ham. We didn’t want to give them any time on the ball, we closed them down, we harried them from all over the pitch and at times played some good stuff ourselves.”

He says even though Town were well ahead at the end of normal time, there were still a few nerves: “We were 4-1 up and when the four minutes went up the groan around the ground showed you that we’re still not safe, so it was nice for us to get a fifth goal, it was a terrific goal.”

Jewell wouldn’t speak about turning points, but felt it was a result which will do everyone good: “It’s a great tonic for everybody - players, manager, staff, owner, supporters, even the guys who ask the questions every week, it’s a nice feeling.

“But we’ve had a few false dawns before this season and we know we’ve got a really tough game on Saturday but at least we can look forward to that game with a bit more confidence.”

Jewell had praise for midfield duo Andy Drury and Luke Hyam: “Andy’s got quality on the ball and it would have been nice if he could have stuck one away.

“I think he showed a calm head at times and him and Luke have done terrific in there. They’re keeping senior players out of the team because their performances in the last three games.”

He says the inclusion of Michael Chopra was a last minute thing: “It was a late decision. Sometimes as a manager you get a gut feeling, sometimes you get it wrong.

"Chops has been sharp in training for the last couple of days and I made the late decision today to play him. Jason was a bit unlucky, but it was a terrific first goal.”

Hammers boss Sam Allardyce slammed his side's defending: "I was bitterly disappointed. I didn't expect us to put on such a poor performance defensively.

"That's been our ultimate strength this season, especially away from home, but as a defensive unit we just disintegrated.

"Ipswich came out of the blocks quicker than us and exposed the gaping holes we left in our back four. When you do that you get punished.

"We were very, very poor in that department and that's why we lost the game.

"Even when we clawed our way back we didn't have the organisation or communication to make sure we got through to half-time, so I could sort one or two things out.

"Ipswich were great and took full advantage of us not being on song.

"They stuck their chances away when they came their way, so from a football point of view it's been a shock and a really bad day."

P.S Drury put Bullard to shame tonight with his passing. Drury not long ago a non league player, and Bullard not long ago a premier league player.

Loved Jimmy signalling '4-1' to the north stand though at one point. Don't think I could ever stay angry at him.

First time I've posted on here. (I didn't go to the match - I live too far away and its just too damn expensive with travel costs these days).
Some good points made though - I first went to ITFC IN 1970, shortly after Sir Bobby arrived. Town were awful, and if memory is correct he sold Rod Belfitt (crowd faourite at the time) at the end of the season. 'Robson Out!' came the cries but the board stuck with him and one David Johnston (spelling?) was then bought in and was soon an England striker. Eventually he went to Liverpool (Sack Robson!), to be replaced by Paul Mariner (I'll never forget Wembly chanting his name to comne on as a sub for his first England cap!).
Of course Town weren't particularly successful during those years! Sir Bobby also bought in a couple of Dutch 'has beens', Funnily they proved to be quiet a success and in 1980/81/92 Town where regarded as one of the best, if not the best sidee in Europe.
Where's this leading? Give the manager time to build. RK didn't work and the fans turned against him which is why he had to go. For goodness sake give Jewell some time.
He's shown tonight that his team can humiliate the league leaders so the ability is obviously there: talking to a West Ham supporter in my local (I live in Kent) he reckons ITFC are the best team they've seen at Upton Park (or whatever its called these days!).
We have the potential - it takes time to get consistency. I know this from sports I've competed in - you show flashes of what you're capable of but it doesn't all come together in one year. I'm really looking forward to next season.
With regards indivual players:
Smith is an enigma - played superbly for New Zealand when they held Italy at the World Cup a couple of years ago. He has the ability but, I suspect, no confidence. He can be repaired.
Hyam - fantastic to hear he is coming on so well.
Murphy - can we get him on a permanent? Please!!
JET - what a fantastic signing. He'll drift in and out of games but when he's good he's simply bloody marvelous. We need players of his quality,
Chopra?? Going through the mill personally at the moment. I wish him all the best and tonights goal and (reported) ovation would have done him the world of good, Strikers need confidence in order to score.
Bowyer - well he's still injured so no judgement.
Bullard: 'They can afford to leave Jimmy Bullard on the bench!!' I can hear opposing managers saying that.
Scotland: What a bloody star! worked his balls off to get back into the team. I just love his attitude.
Carson??? Let's hope this is not another Rhodes. He's a damn good player and needs time playing but........what's his attitude like? He may need to have a word with Scotand.
The failed Pompey signings? Happy with that: they just made noises to try and get the biggest pay cheque they could. Good riddance to mercenaries - they're worth what they're worth, no more.
To those of you saying 'Spend some money Evans' its not always the answer.
I think Sir Bobby bought 13 players in 14 years (or was it 14 in 13?. Regardeless, this club was built from within.
Also re ambition: Sir Bobby's brief from the Cobbolds was : 'We quiet like being in Division 1, it would be nice if you could keep us there'. Obviously he exceeded his brief (the FA where surprised when he asked for a Jag as his company car when he took the England job!).
Let's get realistic - we are a small, provincial town club that once punched well above our weight - I'll never forget beating Barca (including Cruyff et al) 3-0 at Portman Rd, But.... Let's get real in 2012 we can't compete with the big 6(7?) in the Premierhsip. Aspirations should be geared accordingly.
We need a slow rebuilding process, we need a grade A acadamy, we need to be seen as a club where players can progress their careers (let's face facts - players chase the biggest contract today!), and where players can feel good. To do that you need stability from top to bottom so give the guys in charge a chance - you'll be singing their praises when Town get promoted (and I believe it will happen under current managmengt team). Be prepared for a maybe a season or two of frustration and then watch Town fly.
Tonight has proven they have what it takes.

Well there's a song in the air today.
So we can stop the desperate rummaging around the bargain basement and look for a class centreback.

The post by hermaneatspuffin is absolutely spot on.

I will put my hands up to being on here and being anti jewell given the run of the past 16 games.

It is clear that he is here to stay and the players are clearly playing for him

So love him or not, it is time to unite as fans cos we can play our part and the atmosphere last night was the best its been for ages. A win makes it easier!

Lots more football to be played and its one win but if we can build on this we will be alright.

Didn't post last night, wanted to wake up to find it wasn't all a dream first!!!! (Instead went out to celebrate in style!!!) What can I say, last few games this has been coming, we have played well but in the last two school boy errors let us down, last night we didn't let that happen. When west ham made it two one they took control for a while and I feared the worse, but we rode the storm and came back fighting again!!!

ALB - please keep him in goal, starting to gain a good understanding with back four!
Sonko - much much better, looked strong solid and did a great captains job
Smith - hmm still shaky for me I'm afraid, we need a decent cb for sure
Cressie - quality
Edwards - one of his best games, made some good decisions not to Chase balls going forward and instead tracked back to defend so not leaving himself open.
Hyam - the way he picks out a pass at times is fantastic, did give the ball away a little too often but will always fight to get it back and his tackles are fantastic.
Drury - for me captain material, a guy who wasn't wanted a few weeks back yet he hasn't sulked he wears that shirt with pride, anyone see his fist in the air gesture to the north stand as players left pitch? He is a very very good midfielder, has it all bit of pace, great defensively but equally good going forward, who neefs andrews and his inflated wage demands.
Martin - well done pj bringing him back when Keane had given up on him, also inspired playing him just behind striker, means he doesn't have to put in those tackles on the wing that you just know he will miss time!!! Covered every blade of grass, a true star and my mom.
Jet - totally out of game most of first half, second half was a total thorn in there side, brilliant!
Murphy - big, strong and committed one of his better games
Chopra - good to see him score, people don't appreciat his work rate, not a typical lazy striker waiting for ball to feet, he too covered so much ground.
Scotland - needs a new contract!

All in all great game, west ham were very poor, but controlling the midfield helped to ensure their ultimate downfall.

Finally fickle fan of the day goes to Jas - where r u when we are winning eh.

Still smiling this morning, excellent performance from the whole team and if the ref hadn't bottled it we could have had several more. For those calling for Carson to play, were you there? did you see Murphy? thoroughly deveserved his starting spot today. Not sure why people are knocking Smith, he was reasonably solid and needs a proper run of games to build a partnership with Sonko.
Chopra ran him self into the ground and the whole Midfield was excellent and didn't give them any time on the ball.

A win against a west ham side that looked alot poorer than usual so lets not get carried away 1 win every 12 games will not be enough to keep us in the championship let alone get promoted. Its a win but they need to do a lot more work and we still need PJ OUT!!!

Tremendous performance and result. Again, Martin ran his socks off - but the entire team deserve credit.

Was surrounded by 'ammers fans - don't they whinge a lot? Apparently the penalty was a dive and none of our goals were any good, the ref was unfair, we will be relegated, they are top.... ..oh, and they DID win the World Cup (which is fair enough).

I think the reason that West Ham missed their chances was that we constantly pressured them, we hardly gave them a second on the ball and prevented them from taking some of their shots cleanly, we have now shown what a good team of players we have, let's move forward and repeat this type of football every time we play, the Manager takes a lot of criticism when we play poorly so let's acknowledge him for last night, the players were excellent throughout the park and all showed that determination and extra effort, that wins matches, they played for their own pride, the club's future and us loyal supporters, I enjoyed being there in the cold last night, probably as much as any match I've ever seen, hearty congratulations to all the players for the terrific effort and the amazing win, I am truly delighted, COYB.

Great performance last night, let's hope we can continue to push away from the relegation zone. If the players can have belief in themselves going into every game like last night and have full support from ALL supporters we can now go on a good run. We do still need a recognised right back and centre back on loan, but I believe we will not go down to league 1, and then start looking for the younger hungry players early in the summer who can maybe push us to promotion next season.

Great night - congratulations to all players and PJ. Just goes to show what CAN be acheived by the players we have already - if they play as a team, rather than a group of individuals.

Personally I think this result has been brewing for a few weeks now.
Martin stood out for me last night but the whole time were awesome. Let's not get carried away though, we need to win at Coventry on Saturday which will build the gap on the drop zone and give the players more confidence.
One other thing, ALB needs to stay in goal.

Quite right. Very impressive. But the failure to sign new players is disappointing. Despite ONE good - no excellent result - we can not overlook the season as a whole. We are inconsistent and just because the defence did okay last night (ALB for me flapped at times, whilst Edwards was caught out of position) does NOT mean that new players are not required. They are - as 2 wins in 16 before last night proves. Disappointed with PJ and Clegg for not bringing players in.

Well this time, for me, one swallow does make a summer! I think the boost last night gave to the players, the manager and the supporters will provide sufficient belief and confidence to go on and just get better. What a pleasure it is to read real comments with only one worm crawling out of the woodwork. If only all people would get behind the team and Manager instead of this incessant 'Jewell out' nonsense (I have news for you guys, he is here to stay so you had better start accepting it) what a different feeling would be purveyed right across the whole area of Town support. How would those people feel if other people were consistently screaming for them to get the sack, confident on the way to work? The person who posted yesterday evening that he hoped Town got thrashed because we had failed to sign some guy who did pot want to play for us is not a supporter he is just an idiot and should be thoroughly shamed. I am glad we did not sign any of those people because I, for one, only want people here who want to be here to play for us. Last night just showed what can be achieved by people who want to play for their Manager and for each other and last nights win was something a lot of people felt was on the cards. Well done Paul Jewell and well done to ALL the players. I would just ask that PJ does not start tinkering with the team and particularly in the goalkeeping area and I would like to see the loan goalkeeper sent back to his own club because, again, it is a matter of the confidence the Manager feels in his players and, while Lee Barrett may not be the showiest of keepers, he has never yet let us down and Wrighty used to be a strong fans favourite but his confidence must be appallingly low at the moment. Come on lads do not let it slip now, hang on in there, and things are on the up. Well done and COYB.

A brilliant night I can't remember the last win like that on a Tuesday night.
The players were excellent and they wanted to play football and for each other.
We do have a very talented team we just need to keep it up.
Murphy, jet & Martin can play key roles in match's to come. They were awesome!! Plus Drury & Hyam it looks a decent midfield at last, just sort out the defence. If we keep playing like that we won't have 2. Credit to chops too a great finish.
I am very happy for once! We hammered the hammers - nice 1
