Bristol City Targeting Scotland on Loan
Bristol City Targeting Scotland on Loan
Friday, 10th Feb 2012 10:24

Bristol City want to take Town striker Jason Scotland on loan for the remainder of their season. The 20th-placed Robins are managed by Derek McInnes, who played alongside the 32-year-old frontman at his first UK club Dundee United between 2003 and 2005.

The former Swansea and Wigan man is currently out of the first XI with Michael Chopra having taken his place in the side for the last two games, scoring three goals.

Scotland may be interested in the switch if he feels that he has a greater chance of playing first team football at Ashton Gate - and perhaps of winning a longer term move in the summer - while Town may consider the offer with the Trinidadian out of contract but having a clause in his deal which means he gets another year at his current wage if he makes three more league starts.

Speaking at the end of last week, McInnes confirmed that Bristol City are on the lookout for a striker on loan with Nicky Maynard having joined West Ham for £2 million on the final day of the transfer window: “I think we’re a wee bit short up front and I’m certainly considering bringing another forward in now that Nicky has gone.”

If Scotland does move on, the Blues would appear certain to look to the loan market themselves with strikers in short supply, Tamás Priskin having left to join Russian side Alania Vladikavkaz and Ronan Murray on loan at Swindon until the end of the season.

Football League clubs have been able to bring players in on 93-day loans on an 'emergency' basis since Wednesday, deals which now stretch to the end of the regular season, but not the play-offs.

I like Scotland and credit to him for his attitude and work rate. HOWEVER, coming from the Premier League his wages must be high; if he's on £12K a week that £624K for another year. Could this money be spent on a younger player, bringing someone new and fresh in? Under the new Financial Fair Play rules we may be unable to make new signings if our wage bill is too high and we all want to see new blood in the summer or before. So if Bristol City are offering a decent loan fee I'd reluctantly say let him go.

Agree that Scotland has looked a different player this season compared to last but with age against him and the wages that he's on it would benefit us if he moved on.

A mate of mine who works at Dalham Hall Stud Farm in Newmarket text me to say that Michael Owen popped in there this morning on his way to Ipswich???? Sounds promising.

It would be very short sighted to allow Scotland to move, possibly even making the difference between League One or Championship football next season.

If it's to avoid triggering an extension to his contract, start him on the bench every game and introduce him after half an hour if things are not going well.

He's been a different player this season not because he's playing for a contract but because he's not been the lone striker.

@garv where does it say pj wants him to go out on loan? Relax man. Personally i would like him to stay till the end of the season. His wages are the big problem plus the clause in his contract.

Double edged sword this one, we would save on his wages but miss his performances and he has obviously worked hard to improve his fitness but did'nt i read that Stephenson can play up front maybe it's his chance to see what he can do.

Can understand letting Jason leave because off his big wages, but we do not want to strenghthen a team who are at foot of table with us.
As earlier post said i would take Pitman in exchange or even Dean Gurkin who is a far better keeper than any we have, this way both clubs would strenghthen there team.

Irrespective of contract clauses, it would be madness loaning a decent striker out to a rival team battling against relegation. Hopefully nothing will come of this.

This would benefit our relegation rivals more than it would us - so NO!

Do not want to see Jason go but is all this about money again ? We seem to be trying to save on everything .Perhaps we will get the Portsmouth 3 on loan by paying their current wages , while they are here we get them to like the place and they stay long term . At least they would continue to get paid and Pompey would save money .Everyone wins short term.Maybe us in the long term as well.

Take Ellington. No way Scotland. If Chopra gets injured we'll have ellington up front and be relegated. No thanks.

Loaning a striker to our relegation rivals could bite us on the bum!

Scotland has been a consistent performer and should not be allowed to leave. Sadly, despite reassurances, Clegg has yet again failed to deal with contracts, so it may be that Scotland would be very happy to leave. Who can blame him.

Agree with POTS so far, holds the ball up well and can finish when we provide him with decent service, he's settled here now, bringing someone else in on loan to replace him would be foolish as they might need time to settle - we haven't got time, we are still fighting remember..

A no brainer...no chance Brizzle!

Good strong hold up player. Brings the attacking midfielders such as Martin and Jet into the game and offers a goal threat as well. At the moment we are winning games by outscoring teams, should chopra get injured after loaning scotland, we'd be stuck with Ellington and reduce our chances of doing this. We aren't out of the woods yet, and we need players who are commited to the cause, Scotland has proven himself to be that this season.
