Jewell Delighted With Third Successive Win
Jewell Delighted With Third Successive Win
Tuesday, 14th Feb 2012 22:54

Blues boss Paul Jewell was delighted with his side’s third successive victory, Town leaving Fratton Park with a 1-0 victory over Portsmouth. Pompey manager Michael Appleton admitted his team were second best but believed his side had scored a second-half equaliser when Jay Emmanuel-Thomas’s knee diverted Greg Halford’s long throw into the Blues’ net.

Jewell said: “We’ve played well tonight, we’ve created a host of opportunities. They played well at our place and we were fortunate to beat them, I thought they were one of the better teams to come to Ipswich and we nicked the result there. But tonight I thought we fully deserved it.

“I think before we scored we had three good opportunities. In the second half, Lee’s hit the inside of the post, he’s missed a really good opportunity, the keeper’s made a good save from Murph and you start thinking that we should be comfortable here.

“At the end they had four centre-forwards on the pitch, they were knocking it in the box from throw-ins and corners and we had to defend resolutely.

“We maybe had a little bit of fortune with their ‘goal’ but in general play anyone who was at the game will have thought we deserved to win.”

The Liverpudlian confirmed that referee Darren Deadman had adjudged that no one had touched Halford’s long throw: “That’s what the referee said. One or two people are saying it came off someone’s knee. Over the season sometimes you get it, sometimes you don’t.

“Not so long ago I was lambasting the linesperson’s decision at Birmingham, but on the balance of play, I thought we fully deserved it. On paper it’s a 1-0 but we could have scored four or five.”

The Blues boss was pleased with the way his team began what he felt could have been a tricky night: “It’s a difficult night to come here with everything that’s going on at this football club. It’s obviously a tough time for everybody connected to it, especially the supporters.

“We knew they would be as one, they’d back their team and we’d have to start quickly. We didn’t want them to get any momentum.

“We started the game very fast and very sharp and the goal was the least we deserved. We hit the bar, the keeper made a couple of saves and we had good opportunities.

“After that, for 10 minutes we let them back in the game, but overall, for an away performance, some of our counter-attacking football was terrific.”

Jewell, who also had praise for central defensive pair Tommy Smith and Damien Delaney, says his side have looked more dangerous going forward in recent weeks: “In the last four or five games we’ve looked a threat. We’ve got in the final third and we’ve got a cross or a shot in and made the keeper make a save.

“We look like we’re going to score a goal. Chops has found a bit of form, Lee Martin’s playing as well as he’s ever done. Jay Emmanuel-Thomas is looking the part and I thought Daryl Murphy was terrific tonight. That front four, our attacking players, have all looked dangerous.”

After the game around 2,000 Pompey fans from the Fratton End stayed behind to chant their support of the club and their anger at the various recent owners with the club set to go into administration in the next few days.

Jewell said the Blues players were paying tribute during their warm-down and he planned to do the same: “They’re brilliant. The players are out there applauding them and I’ll probably go out there and applaud them myself.

“Football clubs are about fans and sometimes they get a raw deal and Portsmouth have probably had a raw deal over the last few years. Supporters are the heartbeat of a football club.

“Rangers have gone into administration and it looks like Portsmouth are. It’s a lesson for football - it’s got to keep its house in order.

“Supporters sometimes want people to spend money they haven’t got and in the end it can lead to situations like we’ve got now.”

Pompey boss Michael Appleton says the video clearly shows that Halford’s throw caught Jay Emmanuel-Thomas before hitting the net and his side ought to have had an equaliser: “Basically, Emmanuel-Thomas knees the ball into his own goal. I thought it was a goal right away because the ball’s changed angle as it’s gone into the back of the net.

“The referee thought Halford threw it straight in, it wasn’t for a foul or anything like that. That’s disappointing and the boy knew as well, you could see on his face he knew he’d scored an own goal.

“But, did we do enough really to win the game or get something out of the game, if we really look deep down at ourselves? Probably not. It was a night when it didn’t really happen for us. I don’t know why.”

Great result and who would have thought - a clean sheet. Still need defensive additions but everything else pj is doing at the moment is working a treat. So well done pj (and not because of the chat Marcus Evans gave the players as that idiot jas0999 said). Hilarious.

3 games, 3 wins and 9 goals. The green shoots of recovery are showing through.

And chops has now scored 11 in how many starts? He and jet will be raring to go against Cardiff.

An all round team effort in this turnaround and for me drury, hyam and martin have been a huge part of this. And hats off to PJ for playing a system which gives our back 4 more protection and gives us a real threat going forward.

Give credit where its due.

Only five teams have scored more goals in the Championship than Town's 47 (incidentally, the same number as West Ham and a few other teams). Now we're not leaking so badly, we're making some progress. Long may it continue.

Still need a handy centre-back or two.

i have in recent weeks, slated paul jewell, with i feel total justification, the worst defence in league, not sorting out defence, poor substitutions , players being played out of position, lacklustre performances, use of loan market( mcarthy springs to mind,) signing to many has beens, think we will lose Carson, how much of that is down to jewell, i dont know, there are lots of things we dont know. But the thing i have in common with all the true supporters, i always want ipswich to win and i always wanted jewell to succeed, i believe we have changed the manager far too often to be successful, i have had real doubts as to whether jewell is up to it. one success story of late is drury, but this is only the case because of luck, jewell was letting him go to crawley, remember? and would have done if they had nt gone back on the agreed deal. i would love to be eating humble pie on this one i really would... well done for tonight, not least of all for the clean sheet ...coyb

Very well done to Paul Jewell also, hardly a mention of him on this post so far ! we should give him the credit, praise and support that he deserves too, we should, in my opinion, acknowledge and remember that it is also his team, his selection and his tactics etc. when we win, especially three in succession, after all the man has been insulted wholesale on this site virtually every time we have lost.

Well done to the players and MARCUS EVANS for three straight wins. We have still lost more than half our games this season - which is disappointing, but thank goodness ME went down to the training ground prior to the West Ham game and spoke to all the players. Great motivation and has paid dividends. Why on earth the manager couldn't do that beforehand is beyond me.

Well done to all concerned. A great result.

fully deserved the three points - a pompey mate of mine admitted that too. the disallowed goal should have stood though - I saw the ball go in off somebody but couldn't see why it was ruled out. Being up the other end I just assumed there had been a push or something. But as for ourselves, we could and should have scored more.

Well done Town, lets keep a decent run going until the end of the season. By all accounts they played pretty decent. The side we have got should be the foundations to build upon. Well done you blues!!

That was a great result and to win 3 in a row feels fantastic. It's now nice to see a bit of a gap between us and the releagtion places.

Apart from giving away stupid goals in the Blackpool & Leeds games it's now 5 good performances in a row and the team deserves praise for this.

In addition it was good to see us getting a clean sheet last night. I think that the whole team are working hard at the moment and the effort put in by players is helping the team defend as a unit. The work rates put in by Martin, Drury and Hyam is great to see and at the same time some of the skill shown by JET is a pleasure to watch.

Re: last night I think that both Smith & Delaney deserve a pat on the back because they're both left sided CBs. Although I don't think this is the perfect pairing I'd rather see our own players putting in the effort and playing for the badge.

We'll wait and see it happens but I'd rather not see us go into the loan market for another overpaid Premiership cast off defender who has no interest in being here beyond a couple of months. They would only be here for a pay day and to put themselves in the shop window for another Premiership payday from a different club in the summer.

We'll done to the team and management and fingers crossed for Saturday against Cardiff.

Good win and great to get some momentum. Is it a coincidence it 's against the same sides we did well against at the start of the season? Onwards and upwards.

Great result well done lads, strange but true, there are always more posts when Ipswich lose.
Lets hope we keep winning run going.

That's right Jas0999, a pep talk from the chairman is guaranteed to turn things around. Look how well it worked at Wolves. Chairman steams in after a crap performance; manager has authority totally undermined; team lose next game 5-1 at home to local rivals; manager gets sacked. Brilliant.

I think our owner's probably a bit brighter than that.

very good result - from what I was told this morning by a Portsmouth fan - it was deserved. He maintains (and its support by a few on here today) that it was a goal but he said a draw would have been an injustice to us. Still as concerned as many about the lack of a CB esp. since they are both one sided and think Cardiff will be a different threat. Think righty is now vying for the idiot of the month with Jas

@Dissboyitfc - great to see Ipswich fans in a good mood and cheering on the bous. But you have just summed up the problem we've had this season and probably for a couple of previous seasons too, 3 words: FAIR WEATHER FANS! Football is about loving that winning feeling and accepting that we sometimes lose too - but we never stop supporting the Blues. What has happened on this forum and others recently has been nothing short of shameful on some so-called "fans".

COYB!!

jas - You could say well done ME for coming to speak to them or why didn't he come to them earlier. It's quite clear, anyway, that he and the players are right behind Jewell and slowly but surely are starting to show that. We don't have the best resources, particularly at the back, yet they are playing for the manager and I'd be inclined to say that even since the 5-3 Barnsley game we've improved hugely, despite the odd shocker. I'd put that down to Jewell, he's raised the bar, you're going to have to come to terms with that.

However, a good word for jas. He is sticking to his guns and when Garv and I and a few others continued to back Jewell during the large losing streak we came under huge criticism from h32 and the like for having 'bind faith' in the manger's ability. He wins a few games and now it's jas who's deluded. He probably hasn't seen enough to convince him yet, if that's the case, I guess if we start losing again at least it won't be clear that he's just swaying with the wind as many people on here seem to do...

Sorry Urchin but Jas has that one nailed down for me.

Well done lads, power cut one minute from time, was cacking it, thank god we held on as sounds like we were by far the better team.

Note the number of responses when we do well as opposed to when we lose, shocking, be ashamed those who do that. At least Jas comes on to make a fool of himself whatever the weather.
