Chopra: No Bets in Four Months
Chopra: No Bets in Four Months
Friday, 17th Feb 2012 08:00

Michael Chopra has revealed that he has not had a bet in more than four months as he continues his on-going battle to beat a gambling addiction.

The Town striker also wishes he had confronted his problem sooner and has publicly thanked everyone at Portman Road for the support they have given him.

Chopra said: “It’s 18 weeks now since I had a bet. I just wish I’d come clean and made the change sooner. I realise I’m now starting to grow up, learning things like how to really appreciate life.

“None of the players has taken the mickey. They have all been fantastic and stood behind me. They appreciate it is not easy trying to beat an addiction and recover to lead a normal life.

“Everybody at the club, not just the other players, has been brilliant. It was difficult to own up to the problem. It was embarrassing but I realised it had to be done.”

Chopra, who spent three weeks in rehab at the renowned Sporting Chance clinic, has roared back to form with four goals in his last three games, after losing his place in the starting line-up at the start of this year.

He added: “The manager was right to drop me. I was neither playing well nor scoring goals, but I was determined to get back and I’m delighted now with the way things are going.”

I've had my criticisms for Clegg, but supporting a player like Chopra to sort out his problems is in the finest traditions of our club. Well done.
Cardiff and Sunderland just got rid.

I was delighted for Michael to read the news this morning about this and his college course. A big well done to him and the club for helping him through it.

I did think about the string off bookmaker billboard adverts along the side of the pitch at Portman Road. Keep ignoring them Michael!

Chops, I bet you £10k you can't go another month - do you accept?

No, but seriously well done lad and I think you've underestimated yourself with a 20 goal target i reckon you can do 25 easy - COYB

Although the Chopra situation clearly had an affect on the team and although surprising that PJ went down that route knowing the circumstances, this is now turning into a good news story.

Very pleased for Chopra - any addiction is tough to battle and it's great news that he is winning. Also the club - ME in particular - have handled the situation well and deserve credit.

This is fantastic news and more important than the goals he is knocking in just now. Getting his life together for his lovely young son must be top priority now and he will get the love back one million fold.

A SPECIAL MESSAGE TO THE SPECIAL ONE...

Good luck Chops and I am sure I speak for everyone at Town we are all supporting you on this and your life will have so much more value if you stay focused. I know that every new day is a new challange but every day is also a day further away from the nightmare! Like a train speeding away for your point of exit it does get a bit easier with time as you come to terms with your more distant past and focus on your exciting future! Sincerest wishes.

Well done Michael, 18 weeks is an amazing amount of time and long may it continue. I fully understand the way u have felt and what problems come from an addiction I am just under 11 months sober after admitting I am an alcoholic.
Trust me that life does get easier over time.
COYB!!!
