Jewell Delighted With Fourth Win in a Row
Jewell Delighted With Fourth Win in a Row
Saturday, 18th Feb 2012 18:17

Town boss Paul Jewell was delighted with his side’s 3-0 home victory over Cardiff City, although he admitted he thought keeper Arran Lee-Barrett was going to be red-carded for his early foul on Bluebirds striker Joe Mason. The win was Town’s fourth in a row and their sixth in seven games against Cardiff.

Jewell said: “It was a good result against one of the top teams. There was a spell in the first half where we had to ride our luck a little bit but overall I thought we were worthy winners.

“We had to dig in for 20 minutes in the first half because Cardiff caused us a few problems but we were resolute, we had a little bit of fortune and once we scored, you could see the confidence in the team.”

He admitted that he felt he might needed to call on second-choice keeper Alex McCarthy, feeling that Lee-Barrett may have been fortunate to avoid first use of the Wash and Go: “Probably. I’ve only seen it live and my initial reaction was ‘get your gear off Alex’.

“But I did see the ball go quite a bit wide and the linesman was on that side, so if anyone had a good view, it was him.

“Maybe we might have [been fortunate] but there have been plenty of times this season when we haven’t had the rub of the green.”

Jewell, whose side is up to 16th, 11 points off the play-offs and 15 from the relegation zone, was pleased with his team’s workrate: “[The industry] starts at the front with Michael Chopra, Lee Martin, Daryl Murphy and even Jay Emmanuel-Thomas.

“You can see the crowd warm to that. The least we expect is hard work. But we are running around playing with confidence.

“We’re a difficult team to play against at the moment because we’re in people’s faces and we’ve got athleticism about the team.”

Two-goal Martin impressed his manager, which he admits hasn’t always been the case: “He’s found a little role in the team.

“Lee and I have our ups and downs, it’s been well documented, he’s been ill-disciplined at times, but I think he’s maturing as a footballer and he’s taking a bit of a lead role in our team. He’s one of the leaders, if you like.

“I’ve got nothing but praise for him, he’s found that position, he’s working hard, he’s adding goals to his game and he’s playing with supreme confidence and great energy and he’s a focal point of our team at the moment.”

Jewell was also pleased with his other midfielders, who he says have been crucial to Town’s recent resurgence: “People have come into the team, Andy Drury and Luke Hyam, and played exceptionally well and we’ve found a position which suits Lee Martin.

“I also thought Daryl Murphy was excellent today. I thought his workrate and his industry both on and off the ball was terrific and he had a hand in two of the goals.”

Defensively, the Blues boss was delighted with the first back-to-back clean sheets since September: “What we’ve done at the back this year, whatever back four has played, is make basic errors, individual errors which cost us goals.

“I guess two months ago we would have conceded in that dodgy spell in the first half, even maybe a couple of goals because that’s what’s happened so far this season.

“But we’re playing with that confidence, that belief and that desire and people have taken their chances in the team.

“If you get clean sheets you don’t lose matches, I know it’s an obvious saying. We went to Portsmouth and won 1-0 and it wasn’t a backs to the wall performance.

“Again we kept a clean sheet today. The back four have been vilified by people this year and I’d rather say it’s a team thing rather than a unit of the team — we defend as a team and we attack as a team and at the moment we do look a decent team.

“Both Tommy and Damien, and Cressy and Carlos were terrific," he added. "It was a good performance.”

Cardiff boss Malky Mackay was pleased with his team’s first half display but less so their second: “We started the game well enough and over the course of the first half had plenty of attacks round about their goal.

“We gave the ball away 20 yards from our nets and they scored a good goal from it, so I was disappointed with that, and they had another chance.

“But over the whole of the first half I was quite happy with the way we were playing. Second half, we were second best.”

But it was referee Simon Hooper’s failure to red card Lee-Barrett which particularly irked the one-time Norwich defender: “It was incredible. At the time, the whole stadium, even the Ipswich fans, have got their hearts in their mouths. Their manager blows his cheeks out and looks at me when the yellow card goes up.

“It’s an incredible decision. It’s one that I asked [referee Simon Hooper] about at half-time and he felt that the goalkeeper tried to nick the ball away from our centre-forward with one foot.

“I think anybody who has looked at it has seen two feet off the ground, flying in. He hits him about the knee and takes him out.

“I think if that’s challenge by two midfielders or a centre-back on someone in the middle of the park, forget goalscoring opportunity, it’s a sending off, never mind last man, him being the goalkeeper and the man running round him to score.

“It’s a defining moment, one that I cannot get my head around and it’s one that the referee’s supervisor and the head of referees will see on Monday, and I’ll be looking for feedback immediately.”

Great result yet again.

I'd like to mention that it appears our form has improved since we got rid of the negative influences in the squad, Priskin, O'Tweeter etc.

Good management.

Humble Pie it is!! I have knocked Lee Martin and I was wrong!! I have, like many others on TWTD, said Hyam should be back in the first 11, and as far as that is concerned, I believe I was right. I have also defended PJ and slagged off the dark lord, which I also believe was right. Where would we have been had Jordan Rhodes still been at Portman Road?

The result yesterday was totally brilliant, and I am so pleased. Well done PJ. It was a pleasure to listen to on radio Suffolk. I moved away from the area in 1992, and the last match that I went to was home to St Ettiene in the EUFA cup, but now . . . I think I making the trek down to PR again. Well done PJ and well done town. COYB!!

Look guys, as an Aussie arm chair fan I don't have to sit what you guys go through at the matches. But my instinct has been to stick with Jewell, who's teams always played canny football. He's a clever guy. The first 4 wins since 2004 are no coincidence. Yes he is the better manager we've had since then. He's a confidence and tactics manager like Martin O'Neill. He should get 3 full years because he could be the closest thing to Burley days we will get. We're the underdog, we are Ipswich. COYB

Sorry, it's obviously just me that thought that their forward was offside before being scythed down by ALB. Obvious red card perhaps but we were robbed at Cardiff so it balances out

Carlos is never a right back!!!! maybe not but hes the best weve had since Wilnis, absolutely sensational, may get caught out of position now and then but always makes amends and if theres a better marauding right bk in the div at the mo....let me know.Lee Martin-player of the season by a country mile, people had called him lazy and ineffectual!!!!,your opinions will never be taken seriously again.Murphy and jet have been transformed and the central mid(a pairing that no-one wud hav picked this season)are growing in stature game by game. Its been a joy watching us for 3 out of the last 4games as we are starting with tempo and letting teams worry abt us,a threat each time we go forward. On the down side we are only 1injury or suspension from defensive carnage again. Play-offs-not a chance but thnk god the morons were ignored and PJ is still in charge as the current form is as good as anything ive seen for 3or4 seasons.

BlueLady... we are all passionate, but its how that gets generated, like you say some want to see us lose so they can have a passionate moan( any one who wants to see us lose is not a passionate supporter). Another thing i have never done is jeer a player in a town shirt b4 he has kicked a ball, i always want us to win and by my reckoning, jeering our own players b4 a ball is kicked, hardly inspires them does it? I am quite happy to see leadbitter go, but when he has our blue shirt on i want to see him do well. CHEPSTOWBLUE... carlos better than David Wright? i can only assume you forgot about him.. COYB

lee martin, lee martin so good they named hime twice!
Best player on the pitch, by far, his work rate is superb............ I'll put my hands up and admit he wasn't my favourite until recently but he's knuckled down and he now leads by example.
Well done Lee, take a bow for being the inspiration behind the clubs resurgence!

Great team effort, and despite ALB being shaken by what should have been a sending off he still kept a clean sheet.
4 wins on the trot! attacking players on form and the defence is coming together,
futures looking good. COYB

*just want to add. Why is Leadbiter on the bench over Carson!?!?! Carson could actually make an impact and is 10x the player leadbiter is for ipswich.

Just one comment - I would like to see JET do a bit more work when he hasn't got the ball. Perhaps the coaching staff are working on it. His heading of the ball has improved no end over recent weeks, so upping his work rate shouldn't be too difficult.

Good to see Chops apologise to the Cardiff fans for his goal celebration but even better to see him celebrate: it shows some real passion and desire is starting to run through the team. His (and Lee Martin's) #playoffs tags on their Tweets also shows some real desire and ambition. Unfortunately though, even if Town made the play-offs and then got promoted I fear it would be very short-lived.
There's still excess baggage in the squad which needs to go and be replaced by young, hungry players so that two or three injuries don't lead to meltdown and loss of confidence. Stephenson is a step in the right direction. We still need cover in in all four defensive positions and one area where I'd be happy to see Town spend some serious money is on the goalkeeper.
I think we're just starting to see the results of PJ's work behind the scenes - players with talent that could have ended up going nowhere now coming on song (Lee Martin in particular) -West Ham and Cardiff, two of the divisions better sides, changing formation to play Town (flattering!) and youngsters growing in confidence. 30 years ago the best in Europe would adapt their game to deal with the threat posed by Town. PJ has got Town imposing their style on matches now and the opposition looking to combat it (I'm not making comparisons in quality between Sir Bobby's great side but you get the idea?). I also love the way PJ talks about Town's four man attack - very positive. Even better is that the front players are learning to defend and not let opposition defenders settle.
Fantastic stuff and if this continues then I look forward to seeing ITFC in the EPL in 2013/14 season.
One further thought - Carson is obviously talented but.........maybe he has some sort of attitide problem - he wouldn't be the first player to have an agent turn his head. PJ would be right to tell him and his agent to FRO. Lets not forget that Gazza, Ronaldo and others were at PR for trials under Sir Bobby but he found them wanting in areas not related to their talent. Attitude is important - that's been made clear in recent matches.

Just to correct myself - it was Tommy Smith, not Lee Martin, that Tweeted #playoffs.

@Dissboyitfc...as i was writing my piece abt Carlos i had David Wright in my mind knowing that someone wud quite rightly pull me up on it,a fine right back,i just really enjoy the cavalier approach that Edwards offers.Spot on abt Leadbitter also,he was outstanding at Birmingham abt a month ago and the treatment of him on saturday was moronic beyond belief. Some "fans" do not deserve a successful team.
