Jewell's Concern at Heavy Defeats and Lack of Draws
Jewell's Concern at Heavy Defeats and Lack of Draws
Monday, 27th Feb 2012 08:59

Boss Paul Jewell says it’s a concern that Town rarely draw a game and generally lose heavily if they don't win comfortably themselves. The Blues’ fourth win on the trot, last week’s 3-0 victory over Cardiff, was followed by Saturday’s loss to Brighton by the same scoreline.

Jewell said: “It’s a cause of concern for us that we don’t seem to be able to draw games. I was speaking to Lennie Lawrence [the assistant manager] at Crystal Palace the other day and he said they very rarely lose heavily and very rarely win heavily.

“We look at our results and we either win well or lose badly. Again on Saturday it looked like a bad defeat, although it wasn’t as far as the football was concerned, but the goals against column tells you where we’ve got to be better.”

The Town manager dismissed suggestions that the number of games had caught up with his young side with Luke Hyam substituted in the second half: “It’s not as if they are babes in arms, we’ve got a few 21-year-olds and Luke, who has done terrific.

“I just thought he had been yellow-carded and made a couple of tackles and I didn’t want us to be reduced to 10 men. It wasn’t a reflection on his performance, more to make sure he didn’t get another yellow card.

“We’ve done really well of late and I thought we did well in large periods of the game but we’ve been punished for basic errors and bad mistakes by a good team, a team who are quite rightly on the edge of the play-offs and who can give anybody a good game.

“It’s not all doom and gloom, we’re disappointed, more in the result than the performance. The only thing that was missing, certainly at half-time, was a goal.”

Asked whether the defeat would end mentions of the play-offs, Jewell added: “I don’t think too many people were seriously talking about the play-offs. It’s a question that your editors are always asking you to ask, I guess.

“We were in a relegation battle a month ago, so to be in a play-off fight a month later is madness. It’s a tough league, there are no easy games and anybody can beat anybody, everyone knows that. We know where we are, we know where we need to strengthen to move forward for next season.”

Meanwhile, Josh Carson has flown to Northern Ireland for their friendly against Norway at Windsor Park, Belfast on Wednesday. The 18-year-old, who signed a new contract last week, has previously won two full caps.

Defender Tommy Smith has arrived in New Zealand for their friendly against Jamaica in Auckland on Wednesday after a gruelling three-leg flight which he will repeat in reverse in time for Town training on Friday. Smith has previously been capped eight times by the All Whites.

yep still need a decent defence, nothing has changed although it is good to see Tommy Smith playing somewhat better, the midfield has improved since we got Leadboots and Dads Army out and as another poster has mentioned has released the pressure on the defence - and our recent good spell just masked the inadequacy of PJ and Cleggy to get anybody in the January transfer window in the key positions of RB and centre backs!

Diss with you 100% and i at times have bitten my tongue and not reacted when we have had a bad run of games for fear of what i might write about the manager! ive been accused in the past of wearing blue tinted glasses, but i am no mug and i can see the limitations we have. i dont know if Jewell is the right guy, like you at times i think maybe he is then he makes silly mistakes (bringing on leadboots saturday being the most recent, particuarly with us needing a goal and JB looking to up for it the week before the few minutes he got)... I also think the entire defence mess is a joke. However my heart wants him to succeed, he does have a good side, i think he is a pretty good man manager, he does have a wicked sense of humour and he has done it twice before (ok and twice he did not!). i would much prefer him to be successful than Keane, who was totally the opposite to everything this club is about. So continue with the passion, moan when needs be and shout the roof off when we play well, for me that is 100% a true fan........

No sh1t Sherlock!

More than a year after taking over and still no sign of Jewell sorting out our defence. Its not rocket science - sort that out and the heavy defeats will stop.

Fourth - im not sure about two players from a good team , but i dont think you are far out. Two good CB's, RB and GK would do it though. I certainly feel a lot more optimistic than when RK was in charge. There is no reason why we cant build a team for the next two or three years around Cresswell, Drury, Hyam , Martin, Carson , JET and even Chopra.
As far as PJ not addressing the defence,i would be more worried if he stated we dont need any defenders, in fact he says the opposite.
He got Collins , im sure with a view to a permanent move and its not his fault that Collins's wife wouldnt move. We had a deal set up for St Ledger and Leicester pulled the plug. He made bids for Pearce, Ward and Henderson and there have been others too. I certainly dont want him to just go out and get any centre back just for the sake of it. I know its frustrating but we need to get the right players in, cos if we dont all the same people who moan about this will be on here slating him for rubbish/panic buys. We are getting there, just be patient.

I'm no expert PJ,but i'm guessing that using 4 goalkeepers in one season, playing an attack minded winger at right-back & not bulking up our defensive options may just have something to do with it...please sort it out this summer.

btw, considering we're one of the teams that score and concede the most goals, you'd think those herberts at Sky and the BBC would maybe stick us on the box a bit more often.

Confidence is a very elusive quality. When the game is tight we struggle to hang on because we lack the mental strength that allows confidence to develop. We have to go 3 goals up to have a chance. Even a goal up and playing well against a perceived inferior team doesn't inspire any confidence that we will win the game. It's all very well calling for new players ( GK & CBs ) but nothing will change until we develop a collective strength. There were signs of this in the recent run of wins but as so often this season, we capitulated in spectacular style when the going got tough at Brighton.

Whether or not the players are good enough is one thing but a never say die attitude will help enormously. This is what the Management team need to produce if we want to rescue late points or even steal wins when we are not playing well. It's all very well PJ telling us what the problem is; we need him to tell us what he can do about it. The players, when interviewed, all talk good games but too often this season games have been surrendered because those same players give the impression that they are merely going through the motions. Cardiff showed yesterday what could be achieved with confidence and belief even against all the odds. Barnsley excepted, we do not seem to be able to respond when the odds are against us.t

Bluelady i would love to see jewel go on and be a success at town, i just have my doubts like so many town fans. And of course you are right again, Keane never was and never will be the kind of manager who epitomizes ipswich town and the high esteem with which the town are held, another Clegg clanger. Its a fine line between being patient and accepting the obvious problems that are not being addressed to having a constructive moan, lots of moaners on here are too destructive.... i dont mind us being a work in progress, as long as i can see progress, and i think most fans are honest and would accept that, some will never be satisfied...coyb

One week we can be excellent, other weeks we can be poor.

The story of our season and the championship in general.

We have been very patient fans over the years, let's hope it pays off in the next season or two!

Looks like our current plan is to trim squad, make do with what we've got, don't splash cash at Jan window, Don't pay out on extras like loans or the academy, Keep Pj and save having to pay him and his backroom staff lots of compensation.

This season has been a short term plan getting in experienced players and loans and going for a quick promotion, This hasn't worked and there isn't any signs that ME is now investing in the long term.

Could be the run up to ME extracting himself from ITFC, especially after the Olympics.

thanks Garv, but hey this is not a english lesson and as long as you could read it? Another thing you prove my point, moaning for the sake of moaning. There are many on here who will find something to moan about.

Garv, getting back to football, you too present a well balanced argument at times.

Come on you blues......

Again lots of common sense on here along with the usual rubbish. Jewell's problem is he loves playing the chirpy scouser role when many of us are
hurting and frustrated at results and dubious transfer dealings. Be funny and light hearted when the work is done not when we are clearly a way away from where we want to be. However positive signs and though like others I am unconvinced Jewell is the one, we are only 3/4 players off a really good team and he is a ion times better than Keane, Bruce, McCarthy and co! Back on track v Bristol!

WhoisJimmyJuan , I did not post my comment because I wanted to prove that I am always right and I am sorry if you thought me patronising.I posted because I am very tired reading comments running the club down and about what Paul Jewell is doing in the transfer market when none of us know.Town keep their transfer targets under wraps and we only listen and read about rumers.I have read loads about our transfer targets so its not a lack of trying but when you have players demanding excessive wages,ie ,the Portsmouth lads,or players not wanting to move to the area ,what can you do .As for your point about no one saying those things,So no one called Paul Jewell a fool,no one said decent defenders and GK. That's why we can't draw those close games. We can't bloody defend. Thank god its only a "new" problem....oh wait a.minute !!
Please note I have not been rude to you,it would be nice if you had the same attitude.

No panic. Our season's over, and all just experimenting from here on out. We know the defence is awful, that we need a whole new defence and keeper, but there's no point forking out on loanees so we can rack up the other 10 points we need. Be happy, we've found a midfield and attack that can make us challengers next season, we've a summer to sort out the defence, and the rest of the season to mess around.

I don't believe some unamed posters come on here just to moan...I just believe some are more critical than others, I think we all share the same passion for the club and the desire for the team to succeed. If the team plays poorly I will try to analyse the faults with players/manager or whatever department deemed to be at fault and if we play well I'll be the first to congatulate the lads (if I can) but unfortunately it has been really another under performing season to now and hence some negative posts - you really cam't deny that will happen.
In my mind the long and short of it is that we've had another poorish season and there will always be the odd posters who will be upset by the performances and this will be shown in their posts - it doesn't mean they don't have their heart in the wrong place, our supporters show their emotions differently.
