Town Ban Racist Tweeter
Town Ban Racist Tweeter
Tuesday, 28th Feb 2012 16:52

Town have banned a supporter from this season's remaining matches both home and away for racially abusing a Brighton fan on Twitter.

The 17-year-old made the comments on Saturday after the Blues’ 3-0 defeat to the Seagulls and was subsequently interviewed by both the club and the police.

Town chief executive Simon Clegg told the club site: "There seems to have been a recent resurgence of homophobic and racist issues within football and as a club we are absolutely committed to supporting the Football Association and Football League in helping to stamp these out.

"Football is a game of passion both on the field and off it but we will not hesitate to take action against any individual associated with this club who is involved in inappropriate behaviour.

"Ipswich Town fans have an excellent reputation at home and away and I'm determined that the good name of the majority is protected."

Shortly after the offensive Tweet was was made, the account was removed.

The kid put his own name in the public domain and I can see no legal basis on which he could sue anyone at all...

Congrats to Clegg for taking appropriate action.

Something I've kept relatively quiet about. In the 90s I was on the receiving end of a torrent of verbal and physical racist and homophobic attacks from a small group of Town fans. I reported it to the police but the best advice they gave me was to stay away from football if I was the target as there's little they can do.

At one away game I was jumped on by one of the group and it was witnessed by a number of people, including a police officer and was caught on CCTV. I also went immediately to get an on the day medical record of injuries (which the police said I was lacking when I previously reported the assaults). With this information the assailant was convicted and gaoled (I'm not sure if he was banned, if he was I was never informed). I was told I would get some compensation but this never happened.

Since then I much confess my desire to attend games has really gone down, one other member of the group saw me behind the Pioneer stand after a game and apologised for things he'd said in the past, or rather for the people he associated with. This was somewhat unprecedented, my acknowledgement at the time was, perhaps, a bit underwhelming but I did accept the apology.

During the 90s I was really pushing the Kick Racism Out of Football campaign at Ipswich and was called into the boardroom by David Sheepshanks to discuss what the club can do. From that meeting he agreed that stewards will be better trained and a clear policy statement will be placed at key visible points around the ground. Before any comments on this I should add that I feel it was as a reaction to the club's obligations to the FA's campaign although I hope the time Sheepshanks spent discussing the issue with me had some influence.

It's sad to see that some of the problems are still there, however it's also good to see that there is more uniformity in opinion that what was said on Twitter was wrong. Recent news events from the 2011 riots have demonstrated that what is posted on online forums and social networks is not above the law.

Although time is a healer and society has grown up a little I'm not sure I could easily fall back in love with attending football matches again.

In criminal law he is NOT a minor and can be named, at 17 the law classes you as a young person. Strange I know, not an adult but treated as one by the law!

The comments made by this guy are just plain wrong. No debate. Well done to the club for banning him. I'd say the ban was light, but maybe given his age and the fact that the club and police have interviewed him, perhaps we have to accept he's held his hands up to being an idiot.

The stuff about him being a minor is irrelevant. He identified himself. Just a bit sad to see Town fans arguing with each other on something I'd hope we could all agree on.

Im afraid it is 17 in the eyes of the law not 18. No law has been broken in naming him, he is deemed a responsible adult.

At least no one has said, sack Clegg or PJ.

One or other must be at fault?

Forget naming and shaming. The point is this type of thing is not needed or indeed welcome in football or any other sport. Must support clubs and the FA in stamping this sort of thing out. Opinions - yes. Even if we don't all agree. Racial comments - absolutely not.

Well done ITFC for stamping this out. Hope this will act as a wake up call for the young lad and he can mature and move on.

As for the naming, im sure Phil would have acted after taking advice. And im fully behind him - it sends a clear message as to how racist abusers will be dealt with in future...

Legally a minor is 16 y/o & below , and Phil isn't reporting anything which wasn't readily available in the public domain anyway...

I agree with jas thats how it shoud be they should also ban people who are hooligans or who think there are . U just have to go into the drum
and monkey on matchdays to see what i mean you have little 14 year old boys in there thinking there all badmen they aint there to see the game their there just to cause trouble i say get rid of them idiots aswell Even on away games on the train the same silly little boys are causing trouble i say get rid of them ans bring back the gd old day when u could take a young child to watch a game without worrying

You don't know the first thing about me you absolute cretin.

No I wasn't at the Brighton game and therefore wasn't 'dishing' out any such abuse you speak of.

To be honest you've made yourself look like the more likely person to have done these things with your ridiculous accusations and assumptions.

So because I have no problem with the author of this story publishing the racist in question's name, I think I'm 'all that' and am obviously someone who is likely to go football just to abuse people. That's some cracking logic fella.

And the thing about people shouting abuse or whatever at the football, they aren't telling everyone their name at the same time as EVERYONE is on Twitter when they 'tweet' something. I'm not saying that's right, but its logical.

The media has kept within law. This lad hasn't. He committed a crime, and by association could have dragged our club and its name through the dirt even
more if action wasn't taken.
