Edwards Agrees New Deal
Edwards Agrees New Deal
Thursday, 15th Mar 2012 06:54

Skipper Carlos Edwards has agreed to sign his new contract with the Blues. TWTD revealed that the 33-year-old had been offered new terms last Thursday.

The new deal will see the Trinidad and Tobago international remain at the club until at least the end of next season, while there is an option for a second year which will be triggered after the midfielder-turned-right-back makes a set number of league appearances.

The summer of 2009 £1.35 million signing from Sunderland is understood to have taken a significant cut in pay from his previous deal with Town looking to reduce their overall wage bill with the Financial Fair Play rules being introduced next season.

Chief executive Simon Clegg says talks have gone well with the ex-Luton and Wrexham man: "We have had good dialogue with Carlos over the last few weeks and I'm delighted to confirm that we have agreed terms with him over a deal for next season."

Meanwhile, Blues boss Paul Jewell was the Town champion at yesterday’s club golf day at Hintlesham. Damien Delaney won the prize for the longest drive.

Amongst the Blues players and coaching staff present and past playing alongside the club's corporate supporters were Tommy Smith, Aaron Cresswell, Daryl Murphy, Lee Bowyer, Alex McCarthy, Chris Hutchings, Sean McCarthy, Andy Liddell, Russell Osman, John Wark, Charlie Woods, Matt Holland, Bryan Hamilton and Geraint Williams.

Would prefer to nail Hyam & Smith down to more long term contracts rather than worry about 33 year olds playing out of position but hey ho still a decent versatile squad player to have next season. Hopefully we still get a specialist right back in the summer though.

The reason we have looked so much better recently is because JET (and Murphy on the left) have learned to cover the full-backs when they attack. I like the option of Carlos's runs and am pleased that he has agreed to stay at Ipwich (where he lives), and on an apparently lower wage to help us as we move towards the new financial structures needed for the future. Let's continue to get behind him (as JET thankfully does!)

Poor old PJ, gets slagged off if he lets players go for free and still gets it when he gives them a new contract. For all his faults Carlos always gives 100% and I am happy he has signed on. Hopefully we will have a specialist RB next season and Carlos can provide cover at RB and RW.

Edwards has been one of our most consistent players this season and the length of this contract (with the add on option) imo is spot on. He has his faults but they were exaggerated earlier in the season when we had the veteran midfield four of Bullard, Bowyer, Andrews and Leadbitter who just didnt have the energy or legs to get up and down the pitch to cover him when he goes forward.
Now we have Drury, Hyam, Martin, Jet and Murphy in there the problem has lessened considerably. I would still be looking for a Cresswell type right back but Edwards is great cover until then and most definately someone to keep at the club. He has done well as captain and has shown his commitment to the club by taking a substantial pay cut. No doubt some of you will however turn this into a negative story once again .

I think he's been our most consistent player this year, despite being out of position and having all of his 'personal' issues, so I think this is a good deal.

Very good news, good bit of business, at his age he will play less so we are paying him less. Ideal as cover and has been OK this year. Glad to see a player sign off on his new contract quickly, shows his desire to stay at town. COYB

really irritates me that even when something positive comes out of portman road, people still find a way to sour it. Carlos has been excellant for us this season, and is showing that he is loyal to us. If/when we sign a hungry young right back, Carlo's atiitude and desire is the first thing i want that RB to see and understand. COYB!

I'm very pleased he is staying with us, wherever he plays on the pitch he gives his all and in my opinion he is a very talented player overall and well worth having in the squad.

Excellent news. Now get Tommy Smith and Leadbitter to sign and get a GK and 3 new defenders in and next season looks very exciting.

Amazing - we get a regular to sign a new contract on much reduced terms and people are moaning.

BergholtBlue - "I'm sure some would come on here moaning about not having anything to moan about". LOL. So true!!

Very happy with Carlos staying. One of my players of the season without doubt

Who's to say he will be played as a right back next season? He may not even start anyway, if PJ gets a right back in, which he should do, i think edwards will be used further forward as he still has a lot to offer the team.

Glad Carlos is staying, despite being offered a lesser deal (as far as we know). he has improved a lot this season and the emergence of JET recently getting back to cover if and when Carlos goes forward, is extremely pleasing. He is 33 that's true but he is still probably the fittest and fastest player in the first team. He regularly skins full backs still which must be embarrassing for them and he can still put good balls into the box. He has had a lot of personal issues this year and is staying loyal to town....and we all want that right?

Good news.

I don't give a monkeys how old Edwards is, I want to know how good he is at football and how fit he is, and in terms of both he excels at the club. You wouldn't know he was 33 by watching him at all, so he can play til he's 45 for all I care as long as he's still fit as a fiddle and playing well like he has generally this season.

Plus I wouldn't bother pushing him further up field. I've said before when he first came, and played on the wing he was pretty average and didn't have many fans. He's playing/played well at full back this season, so why change it? He's not the best right back in the division but I would bet we would be disappointed in more or less any replacement (unless Micah Richards maybe) because they're aren't many players that can do what Edwards does, he's a very unique player.

Good loyalty shown by Carlos and excellent cover for the right side for next season .Would prefer him in more of an attacking role than defending though .

Very good news.

Edwards is keen, fit and an important part of the attacking set-up in the current Town system. Getting the purely defensive full-back that some people want would blunt our teeth. I'd much rather we reinforced the CBs and continued the integrated whole-team defending which has proven so successful over the last seven weeks (only just over one goal per game conceded on average, with three clean sheets).

And he was willing to take a pay-cut, too. Good on him.

Excellent news and without doubt a leading contender for player of the season and people still moan - unbelievable.

I agree, entirely, with Blueladys comments. I cannot begin to understand the attitude of some of you moaners, you must lead very miserable lives. Carlos has been instrumental in helping to turn this team round, he plays out of position week in and week out without moaning, he willingly took a pay cut to stay at Town and that is the sort of attitude we have all been looking for. Ipswich Town are once more a team to be reckoned with and that comes quite a bit from Carlos's attitude as Captain. We need a good keeper, a RB and a Central Defender then in my humble opinion we will be able to go up with lasting confidence. This is a long term business and I think Paul Jewell is doing an excellent job in very trying circumstances

I think only the first few posts were negaitive as then people realised that actually he is an asset.

Pleased also that hes shown loyalty to the club, as I'm sure theres a club out there that would have matched our new terms. So I for one am pleased with this. I wonder if hes being lined up as the new perminant club captain?
