Murphy Unsure of Future

Daryl Murphy says he has no idea where he’ll be playing his football next season. The 29-year-old, who scored the Blues’ winning goal in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Barnsley, the fourth strike of his season-long loan spell, has another year left on his contract at Celtic.

Murphy said: “I have not got a clue. As far as I know I’m going back to Celtic at the end of the season.

“I have enjoyed my time here and want to carry on playing as many more games as I can and want to finish the season on a high and who knows what will happen then.

"I have really enjoyed my time, same as I did last time which is why I came back.”

The Waterford-born striker or midfielder was delighted to score during Saturday’s game having been moved up front but was disappointed he didn’t net a later chance: “It is good to be on goal sheet. I was delighted to be playing back up front.

“I enjoyed that as I had almost forgotten what it was like to run channels and play up top and thankfully we won the game which was the main thing.

“I’m devastated over missing that second chance as it was an easier finish than the one I scored.”

However, the Irish international, who previously played up front with Michael Chopra at Sunderland, says he doesn’t mind playing out wide as he has for much of this season: “I got used to being out wide and have enjoyed it.

“I have spoken to the gaffer and he told me I was doing a job for the team and I have been playing every week so I have to be happy about that.”

Murphy had praise for keeper Arran Lee-Barrett for his two late saves: “Arran has kept us in front with two brilliant saves when it could easily have gone the other way.”

He says that with six games remaining, the Blues have to look to keep their current run going: “You can’t start thinking about the summer as we still have games left and we have to pick up as many points as we can because the gaffer wants to finish the season on a high.

“If we can finish the season on high it will be good for the gaffer and everyone involved, thinking about next year.”

A really important player for us and it's easy to underestimate what he does for the team. I hope we can do something to bring him here again next year, but I'm sure a few short-sighted clowns will be along shortly to say he's useless.

whether we shocks sign him up depends v much on what salary he would expect. I'd offer 5k and see how it goes.

One of the best, most consistent players this season along with Cresswell and Edwards. Big fan. I think we might finally do a permanent deal with him.

He is certainly one of our main players. You only have to look how many times he wins the ball when hoofed up front and he also holds it up well. Sign him PJ.

sign him up... great with his head, always getting back to defend and can whip in a decent cross too. but play him on the left, not up top.

Very useful on the left but perfect for adapting to 442 without making a sub like Saturday.

Agree with all the above Murphy has done a great job on the left wothout any fuss and scored a couple of decent goals. I like the fact the team can change their shape with him on the pitch without having to make a substitution. He has been particularly good at keeping wayward goal kicks in play which seems to happen too regularly.
The only question is how much he wants to stay.

Murphy has done well for us in the second half of the season and his aerial ability and hard work have been important. I hope a deal can be done, but he will have to be realistic about his wage demands. Perhaps he could negotiate an exit with Celtic and then sign for us on an affordable deal.

I think we should sign him not because we r fellow irishmen. He can play in a few positions for us so if he is willing to play for 4 to 5 grand a week which is good money i think he would be an asset.

Have to agree. This season especially, he has done a lot of good things that have gone under the radar. I guess it depends on his wages and how much Celtic would ask for him, whether Paul Jewell goes in for him.

The attack has a nice balance to it with Murphy there. We have so much pace and dribbling ability and then Murphy offers that ariel threat and an ability to hold the ball up. His crossing and shooting is improving as the season goes on too, which is encouraging. If Murphy had pace he would be at a mid table Premiership side no doubt. As people have already said, alot of his good work goes unappreciated, which could work in our favour when trying to sign him.

People need to get real. I seem to recall he was on 18K a week at Sunderland - he is bound to be on more (certainly not less) at Celtic. We are looking to sign players on 5K a week - we have no chance!

I understand the fair play regulations, but other Championship clubs will be offering players more than we will - probably all Championship clubs. We will find it difficult to replace Leadbitter and Murphy offering those sort of terms. It could be yet another disappointing Summer.

Far better options out there.

If we can afford him, sign him. At 6'2", he provides a useful target man compared with Chopra's 5'6" and Scotland's 5'8". He seems very committed and hard working. If PJ doesn't sign him, I expect he will use Josh Carson instead next season. The latter is possibly pacier, but at 5'9" you immediately lose the balance of having a target man to receive and deal with the inevitable long punts up field.

I don't recall last summer being disappointing do you Jas? In fact most of us were in agreement it was one of the best summer transfer window we've seen for years. It was the bit afterwards that was disappointing.

18k, really? I've seen many people suggest he's on a packet at Celtic but I'm not convinced he'll be out of our price range. I'd be happy if we offered him 10k a week. The top money should be given to the players who will be consistent and ultimately play the most games and therefore probably contribute the most.

Have to agree with Garv on this one. This summer i'm sure will be the best one yet. PJ knows what he needs and has to do. Big season for us next season. We are not a million miles away. Going forward we are fine just need to work defensivly as a unit.

His hight and ability in the air has been very important to us in attack and defence. Sounds like he wants to play up front rather than wide, this may be a factor along with his wage if he would sign for us or not.

Has been a very important part of our play, The keeper looks to him, at goal kicks, and more.

Good all rounder, would rather have him playing for us than against. Also, he's strong and kept on his feet with his goal where lesser players would have possibly gone down. Sign him up.
