Wednesday Targeting Bennett
Wednesday Targeting Bennett
Thursday, 19th Apr 2012 11:25

Sheffield Wednesday are amongst the League One clubs to have approached Town youngster Callum Bennett, TWTD understands.

Second-year scholar Bennett has turned down a one-year contract with the Blues with manager Paul Jewell revealing that the former Kesgrave High School pupil was interesting a number of clubs in League One.

Colchester United aren’t one of them, however, with boss John Ward insisting that his club hasn’t made a move for the right-back or midfielder: “We haven’t approached anyone about Callum Bennett.”

Do we practice shooting with no goal keeper on Wednesday's?

He will join his brother at Norwich.

Presumably as we offered a deal we will still get some sort of fee. Shame he is leaving but first team opportunities are limited for him here and a drop down to League one will probably help his career.

I do worry that we only offer our youth short contracts, they cant be very expensive and I think 2 - 3 years would give them the security they need whilst taking the pressure off them to have an imediate impact. We could then loan them out to L1 clubs to get the first team experience/confidence (as we did with Murray and Drury)

I'm sure many will gloss over this, but the number of young players who are turning down pro contracts with us now should be a real cause for concern. I don't remember it ever happening a few years back.

Souper Jim I share your concerns.

SouperJim - agreed, and although I will get slated for this (again!); but one of the reasons is PJ has a reputation of preferring older players to the younger one's. Some people will want to gloss over it and pretend it's not the case - but sadly the majority of signings last Summer were oldies and loans (with exception of JET and Cresswell). The treatment of players like Hyam and Carson will not have gone unnoticed, even if people on here want to pretend otherwise.

Nice to see some sensible comments on here for a change... well apart from the bizarre brother comment. I wish the people in charge would take a long hard look at how the club is being run at the moment. Sheff Wednesday is a big club that looks like it might be going places, so good luck to the lad.

We have a few meaningless games at the end of the season. We know that there are older players (e.g. Leadbitter and Bowyer) who may not be signing for us over the summer. What do we do? We play the oldies and wonder why the youngsters get frustrated and want to leave.

Would have to agree with the bulk of the comments and I have been slated many times for my views on the management but PJ and co to blame for this.

Still Wednesday are a big club with a good manager and they could be championship next season too so good luck to him a good move if true. And yes the management if worth anything would have kept this boy and either offered a loan deal or more than half a dozen reserve games here next season a sad day for this club who once were the envy of all

How can anyone on here be a good judge of the value of these young players. Just because they are young and play at the academy doesn't make them valuable. Lets leave the management of the club to those that get paid to manage it and the rest of us continue to be Supporters of ITFC.

Ipswichbusiness "meaningless games" fans are paying good money to watch these games and want to see strong sides put out and good team performances - just like Tuesday. Plenty of time at training and friendly games for these 'young stars' to shine and get themselves in the first team.

newboy ;- Is it possible that having offered him a pro contract, indeed they were going to put him out on loan, hardly bad management. We'll never know, but his choice not management.

What a stupid thing to say. In all the years i've been going to Ipswich games i've never once heard a fan bemoan young players being given a chance regardless of the stature of the game. Infact quite the opposite, it was part of the clubs culture until these idiots took over. Fans love to see young players coming through and that is true at pretty much any club in the world.

Lets drop all the first team and play the youths!!!!!!!!

Ipswichbusiness added 16:15 - Apr 19
Alfromcol, I know that we all pay good money to watch the matches. However, whatever we do in the last few games is not going to make much difference to our league position and hence the matches are "meaningless". We could try to rescue something from the situation by playing one or two (I don't say a whole team) of youngsters. If we're not prepared to do that, why are we spending money on an academy?

I must have missed the post that said drop the whole first eam and play the youth players????
But is there any harm in a line-up such as:
Cropper
Edwards, Ainsley, Smith, Cresswell
Carson Hyam Drury JET
Martin Chopra
Nice balance of current first team and youths, with those getting chances who have been on the fringe?????

Even though I've never seen him play Bennett is a fantastic young player and we should never have let him go.

Yes Souper jim its a real concern, i think we should be offering new longer contracts to many of our players, Hyam, 1 year
not enough, Smith Martin Jet should get new longer contracts before greedy agents get a chance to turn their heads.I dont agree with "keep em keen and hungry" .the management staff should be able to motivate them regardsless of their contracts or they are not doing their jobs.

Not at all bothered about him, remember he played in a team that didn't win a game for months from November 2011!!!! What we need are young players with first team experience from the lower leagues who can push the players in the team. He is not going to do that and clearly wants too much money from us.

blue1 added 19:36 - Apr 19
Yes seasontkt cobblers would agree 1 year at 200 p.w is definately too much money from us and yes the U18s have not achieved under Osman and yes already 1 of them has walked out and gone to Colchester because he manages so well. And how many games have you watched to give your highly educated uninformed opinion. Oh and yes lets throw money at everyone elses cast offs because thats the way to go perhaps you should join the current woeful management team you would fit right in

SouperJim - totally agree with you - IT JUST DIDN'T HAPPEN in those days.
Youngsters wanted to come here from all over the Country then. FACT.
Now even the 'local' youngsters are far from keen to do so - should really be ringing ALARM BELLS - but obviously isn't where some are concerned.

That's one of the many difference's between ITFC 'of then' - and now.

Everything about the Club now is SHORT TERM.
Middle to Long Term planning - is just TOTALLY absent.
It can only end up in one thing ....... !! Just wait and see.
