Cropper Released
Cropper Released
Monday, 23rd Apr 2012 22:44

Town have told third-choice goalkeeper Cody Cropper that he won’t be offered a new contract at the end of the season. The US U20 international's current one-year deal is up at the end of June.

Cropper tweeted his disappointment: “It’s honestly so depressing but at the same time it’s good to know that I can move on to bigger and better things.”

The 19-year-old, who has missed much of the campaign due to a knee injury, joined the Blues’ Academy on a two-year scholarship in the summer of 2010.

As he was a year older than is usually the case for scholars, he signed a one-year professional contract last summer while he completed his time at Playford Road.

He has been on the first-team bench on three occasions, most recently at Crystal Palace 10 days ago, but never made a senior appearance.

The 6ft 3in tall Atlanta-born stopper, whose father is English, impressed the Town youth set-up in trials during 2009/10, having previously spent similar spells at Leicester, Arsenal, Birmingham, Portsmouth, Wolves and West Ham.

My question is why? It can't be financial reasons surely? Do we have someone lined up as no1? Say's it all really in his 'tweet' It's good to know so that I can move on for bigger better things.

I posted earlier a couple of things, one about giving Cropper a game on Sat as we know enough about ALB and the other about needing to keep on a couple of youths just to pad out squad....

Haven't seen an awful lot of Cropper, but fact O'Donnell was also released means we have to sign a new number 3/young keeper to have in the squad? Surely this is nonsensical unless one is lined up as Cropper would have been on minimal wages and seems fairly highly rated by those who watch a lot of youth football.

Just struggle to see what this long term plan is that we hear so much about? All we hear about is long term and financial fair play from Clegg but a lot of actions we take seem to be totally contradictory to these statements

Agree with the above cant see the logic in this one

Saw him play a few pre-season games at Haverhill and Bury and I must say I rated him and believe he has all the right attributes to be a top keeper.

Shame to see you go Cody. Best of luck to you

Really? Didn't even give the lad a chance. “It's honestly so depressing but at the same time it's good to know that I can move on to BIGGER and BETTER things.” You probably could getting away from this club!

Confused by this! Kept hearing good things. So we go into the summer with just 1 keeper and 2 central defenders. Going to need that cheque book out again Mr Evans!

It's a shame, as I thought at one time he was highly rated. I trust the management team to make the right decisions though. The important thing is to bring in the right young talent.

I thought this lad was being tipped as potentially our next keeper (maybe after a few seasons from a more experienced player first) so this doesn't make sense. However we don't see what goes on so I can only hope he wasn't as good as we all thought and that he realistically doesn't have a future at this level, if that's not the case then we're doomed, I just don't understand what's happening at the moment with our club, I just have a feeling that Clegg and Evans (who handle contracts, not PJ) just haven't got a clue about running a football club.

We dont watch him every day, the coaches do.

Evans and Clegg have shown so many times that they don't know how to handle contracts. I can picture it in a few years to come Cropper will play against us and could back fire one day possibly.

All our youth set-up must be pants.

When I first saw this, I thought "wow, why on earth have we done this"

But thinking about it, we don't know what the guy is like behind closed doors! I reckon they must have a keeper lined up, surely!

Ask the people who know... Webster, Morgan, Hamilton, Jewell, Osman , etc

This is unnacceptable, Jewell claims he wants to bring in youth, yet he releases one of our young talents that could have made a great career here.

let's be honest here.. he might be good, he might not be. we've never seen him play, and jewell does in training everyday. wish him best for the future! everything happens for a reason. COYB<3

We have a young goalkeeper ALB, jewell quite clearly said he wants a number 1!! Clearly means we have a goalkeeper in line! we would have 4 goalkeepers, why stand in the way of his future if we can't give him a game every week, let him go to lower league team and make something of himself, maybe that's what he wanted, lets face facts 99% of you moaning have never seen the boy even play! I don't see reading, Southampton, west ham, birmingham, Blackpool and Cardiff with a young inexperienced goalkeeper... All top number 1's.

We're lucky that all the midfielders got injured during the season and Hyam got his chance to shine otherwise he'd be out the door as well. I really want Jewell out at least Keane liked using youngsters from the academy in the team and he wasn't afraid to. With Jewell it just seems very laboured, its no surprise why we haven't opted for Cat 2. Whats the point when Jewell is just going to release them and instead play a 30+ year old journeyman. It probably for the best that Rhodes was sold when he was because if it was up to Jewell most likely he would've just released him.

Jewell Out

There's no questioning that Jewell and the other coaches see him every day and will be a better judge, it just seems an odd decision

Like others I was surprised by this, but then again this is not Football Manager 2012 and going a few clicks and looking at his profile doesn't make him a future star at ITFC. As Sindre said the coaches watch him day by day and they would have advised Jewell. We have to trust them on this...

Wright is out of contract in June isn't he?
ALB is 28 which means his best years are ahead of him, but he is not exactly a youth. We must have a keeper lined up otherwise this is bonkers.

PJ Needs Duncan - most of the best 'keepers are 30+ 'journeymen', just asked Brad Friedle...

The club are poor communicators with the fans, how much would it have taken to release a press statement explaining why this decision has been made, even if it's to say he's not good enough!

Sadly when communication fails...rumours start and fans become disheartened.

Sort it out Ipswich

Good luck Coddy, hope you get on well son!

We must have someone lined up, but although some have said nobody plays with a young keeper as their number one, well we did with Supple and Price a few years back and Man Utd have David De Gea and these young players need a career somewhere.
I can only imagine he's not up to the standard because if he was but a more experienced keeper was required why would he not be kept on and loaned out?
Wright is out of contract and unless he's signing a new one even bringing in a new number one that's just (new signing) and ALB, surely you need 3 keepers?
I still don't trust Clegg and Evans to run a football club though.
