Pompey Already Talking to Clubs
Pompey Already Talking to Clubs
Tuesday, 24th Apr 2012 10:31

Portsmouth administrator Trevor Birch says the relegated crisis club are already in transfer talks with other Championship sides who are interested in signing their players over the summer. The Blues have been chasing centre-half Jason Pearce and full-back or midfielder Joel Ward (pictured) since January.

Birch says the reality is that players need to be sold for Pompey to survive with discussions regarding moves under way with one game of the season still to play: “We have had conversations with a couple of clubs and have received interest in Jason Pearce.

“We are still talking, however. There are still things to be sorted. As it stands, we are actively talking to a number of agents and clubs. We have to reduce the wage bill for the club to survive, it is as simple as that.”

The Blues had offers accepted for Ward and keeper Stephen Henderson on the final day of the January transfer window, while bids from Town and others for Pearce were rebuffed.

The Ward and Henderson deals broke down over personal terms with the former Irish U21 international keeper subsequently joining West Ham on loan with a view to a permanent deal.

Ward held talks with Blues manager Paul Jewell in March, while Pearce, Pompey’s Player of the Year, has recently been linked with Leeds, who reports suggest are currently the favourites for his signature.

We won't get Pearce if Leeds are serious. It's a simple but sad fact. Next target?

Jas - they did turn us down, but in very different circumstances. At that time i think they wanted to show commitment to Portsmouth as it was the height of troubles and they still had a chance to stay up (not a bad quality).
Its very different now, and we know that Ward had talks recently with PJ.
Not saying we will get them (i get the feeling we might get Ward but not Pearce) but wouldnt read too much into the fact they didnt come before.

When they and others all insisted on staying at Portsmouth, at a time when their sales could have helped avoid Portsmouth's Administration and relegation I wondered if their love for Portsmouth would have a part in sinking their club......... I suppose Portsmouth must have fans who wish they'd took a walk in January now. No one will pay full whack now to a club desperate to sell, or pay top wages to players desperate to leave?

Me too. He deserves nothing from us. We don't need him now in midfield. GK, RB or CH but he can't play there.

If we cannot get Pearce we could do worse that try and buy Mcfadzean from Crawley. Only seen him once but looked good and strong. Only problem is Bolton look interested too.

WHATS THE POINT OF SIGNING PLAYERS WHO DON'T LIKE THE CLUB THEY COULD OF JOINED EARLY BUT THEY DIDN'T WANT TO SO I WOULD RATHER GET A BETTER FULL BACK AND CB.

Only get them if their hearts in it and they don't just want to come for the pay packet. To be honest, they didn't really do sod all of any use this season anyway so i don't get why they're so highly rated.
