Town Topic: What Could Improve Matchdays at Portman Road?
Town Topic: What Could Improve Matchdays at Portman Road?
Thursday, 24th May 2012 07:48

Town are looking for ways of improving the Portman Road matchday experience ahead of next season and want to hear fans’ ideas.

What do you want to see before the game? What sights or sounds as the players take to the field? And what about at half-time entertainment?

What’s impressed you elsewhere at other clubs in the UK or abroad, or even at other sports? Add anything you’d like to see introduced at Portman Road below and we’ll pass them on. And yes, they know about winning more matches.

The priorities are as previously said cheaper tickets, a new, larger scoreboard and to sort out the pre-match music.

algarvefan, Most people want away fans closer going by what is usually said on the forum. Both sets of supporters can hear what the other is singing and it would naturally bring about more banter and a better atmosphere. I don't swear too much at football but I know that people have been warned and told off for shouting the "f" word once during the match because someone was sitting in front of them who didn't like it. I don't condone constant swearing and if someone is shouting expletives all of the time then it just needs a friendly word, not full blown warning to loyal season ticket holders. Why don't you add to the discussion and suggest something for the atmosphere instead of sniping

Moving the away fans to next to the North Stand would help massively to improve atmosphere – I know the club have said they are put there for policing / safety reasons. Its a shame that these days these reasons out-weigh those of atomosphere / match day experience...

agree with everything said before, might i suggest one more thing though - the good old fashioned american tradition of tailgating! I'm a big fan of the MLS and their fans are allowed to tailgate near the stadium for several hours before a game, I figure it would bring town fans together and make them more organised, while giving everyone a good excuse to have a beer and get excited for the game. Just an idea.

1. Move away fans closer to North Stand
2. Sing 'My Way' before kick-off (in memory of SBR)
3. Big screens to show memorable moments/goals etc.
4. Invite local street/high tempo dance or entertaining groups to perform at half time

Have some v noisy groups of individuals positioned in each stand to get the chants going. There are lots of people in all stands that want to make a noise but are slightly embarrassed to make a noise and stand out in the crowd, but happily join in when the noise builds.

Not sure how this could be set up, but I am sure that better minds than mine can work out the practice. (perhaps we should only employ stewards who can get a chant going!!)

the atmosphere will always be hugely effected by the results but here are a few things I would like to see at Portman Road ...

1) cheaper tickets & get rid of the day of the match ticket price rip-off and drop the booking fees
2) cash turnstiles on the day of the game...make it easier for people to just turn up and pay for the game
3) ALL kids 13yrs or under get in FREE....get them hooked - they are the future supporters
4) move the away fans to block A,B of the Cobbold Stand...this would make a huge improvement to the atmosphere...many grounds have the away fans next to the more vocal home supporters.
5) better pre match music to try and get the crowd up for it! ...maybe the old singing the blues song could be part of it
6) explore the idea of safe standing areas (as done in Germany)
7) give free tickets to the local schools - whats the point of having 10,000 empty seats every game?

How about actually playing some football related pre-match music? Stuff like Just Can't Get Enough, Baby Give It Up, Glad All Over, One Step Beyond and the old Singing The Blues would be a massive improvement on the crap they play now! Even last seasons music wasn't too bad with the radio Suffolk highlights played over the top of it!

Also something HAS to be done about the Sir Alf stand in terms of noise. Maybe those who usually buy tickets for games in the SBR should pick just one game to sit in the SAR stand to see if anyone actually wants to sing! It would certainly be easier than moving the away fans!

Why wait for the away fans to come to the SBR, when we can take the SBR to the away fans!!!

faithless insomnia as the players emerge from the tunnel or revert back to the twilight zone by 2 unlimited which they had a few seasons ago.

Why not have a kids penalty shoot out. Different teams from various local schools on a knockout basis. The club could give 50 freebies say to each school (we have the space), plenty of fans would be up for it as every school would have a fair number of 'old boys' in the crowd rooting for them.

It would cost peanuts and probably nothing with a sponsor. Likewise give them a fair number of freebies in return for paying for it.

Bit of local involvement, a good few new folk getting into PR, club looks good and involvcs itself in the community and the fans get a bit of fun.

the matchday " experience " has got steadily worse over the years and reached an all time low this season with the total waste of time of the fastest kick in - the final was a complete joke .

agree with lots of posters :

singing the blues new version is terrible
music is too loud to hold a proper conversation
half time entertainment is rubbish .........bring back the cheerleaders or some on pitch music , the samba band or even the keepy uppies !
have some youth teams playing matches
" highlights " of the first half on a screen would be good
agreed , it's time the club had it's own anthem

PHIL : If the club really is interested in fans views , could TWTD put together some sort of poll to be sent on to the club

BrightBlue - the idea of singing 'My Way' is a fantastic one - what a great ITFC anthem it could be and its connected to Sir Bobby

Good idea, then we wouldn't have to listen to them in the Upper tier and we could join in with the SBR stand. At the Millwall game all you could hear was the Millwall fans no noise getting to us from the SBR stand, so you may think you are making a noise but you can't be heard in the SAR stand.

Bring back Fucik's "Entry of the Gladiators" (played in B flat major, as I recall) as the teams go onto the pitch at the start. It was most effective in 1961-2!

Get rid of the crappy music when we score, let the crowd be the noise.

i personally go to watch the football ..it is a football match after all. I want to be entertained for the 90mins. Don't see the point of entertainment at half time, most people are off to get a portman pie anyway. Save the money for entertaining us during the match not in between.

Everything is fine until 3pm, the pre match food, drinks and chat, then once we get inside it all goes wrong, dreadful football, players and staff who look disinterested, ball boys who sit motionless and stare into space, stewards who cannot find enough to do due to the falling attendances, inane rubbish from the tannoy, half time entertainment aimed at 10 year olds, all in all a poor product, no wonder more and more choose to stay away, perhaps we should keep the gates locked.

Ok Start at the beginning....
- Obviously goes without saying before you get there the tickets are far too much.
- Food and drink costs are far too high. Far more than the high st.
- I agree with the comments about the music - doesn't exactly get the atmos. going
- The one thing I hate, which most people seem to overlook, is the lining up of the players to shake each others hands. This kills the atmosphere every time. Used to love the days when the players used to come out of the tunnel and sprint towards the north stand. They looked enthusiastic for the game!
- Kids footie at half time I reckon would be good, or bring back the cheerleaders! If I were a conspiracy theorist, I would say that the half time entertainment is cr*p so that you go and buy a pie and pint instead.

Sorry if I have come across as a bit of a moaner... :-)

Defo cheaper tickets as i used to see around 28,000 at games but now it's dropped to around 18,000! the new singing the blues song HAS to go!! its awful, the old one was good as we all used to sing along to it! plus, the entrance sing need to be more lifting, something like the eye of the tiger, bring back right here right now! helped a lot1 COYB!
