Town Topic: What Could Improve Matchdays at Portman Road?
Thursday, 24th May 2012 07:48

Town are looking for ways of improving the Portman Road matchday experience ahead of next season and want to hear fans’ ideas.

What do you want to see before the game? What sights or sounds as the players take to the field? And what about at half-time entertainment?

What’s impressed you elsewhere at other clubs in the UK or abroad, or even at other sports? Add anything you’d like to see introduced at Portman Road below and we’ll pass them on. And yes, they know about winning more matches.

Music at the ground has been a problem for years.

1. Stop playing 10 seconds of this pop hit followed by 10 seconds of another, it drives me mad and no-one can get into any of it before it switches.

2. Play some more ITFC-related stuff: Edward Ebeneezer, Ipswich Calypso, Ipswich Get that Goal, Keep Right On, Blue, Teenage Kicks etc. Yes they're old but at least relevant, and I'm sure there are more modern ones I've forgotten/never heard. Just rotate and drop one in now and again.

3. My Way would be great, but the Sinatra version is a bit funereal, so either pitch it up on the decks, or try the Pistols version(!) The Shirley Bassey version is also a good alternative, as is the Nina Simone, both being a bit more lively. Not hard to pick a suitable one.

5. The old version of Singing the Blues is a bit rubbish, but at least people could clap along/sing along to it. The new one has removed these two integral features and made the whole thing pointless.

4. Ditch the goal music (again). Nobody needs to be prompted as to when to cheer. Kills all the atmosphere stone dead. Awful, tacky etc.etc. If you must do it, at least wait a bit so we can enjoy ourselves, and TURN IT DOWN A BIT!!!!

Can't comment on half-time entertainment as I'm normally in the bar, but in that respect get some more staff, more beer taps, get the staff to pre-pour a few, change the barrel BEFORE half-time etc.. Compared to many grounds the bar service takes forever. That bar in North Upper could also really do with being much longer to avoid everyone queueing five deep for ten minutes.

"We should call out the Norwich score when they lose, ignore when they win.
"

NO ! **** them.

I am fed up with hearing the North Stands obsessive singing about them.

The ticket prices need to be reviewed. We offer lower prices and the attendances go up, so lets stop trying to force fans into buying season tickets by putting the casual tickets up to £35.

The match day experience is always enhanced by having more fans around you so get the club to address how to fill the 10,000 or so empty seat. And not gimmicks, but price.

We need poweful and LOUD up beat music for at least 15 mins before the game just like we had in the prmiership. The pre game music was great then. Halftime entertainment is not important cos most people are discussing the game then.
Also improve the speakers in the lower north.
O and play better!

My personal preference is get that tanoy bloke to read out the PREMIERSHIP half times and full times instead of just say "read the board".

Every other championship club reads them out!

Stop the terrible half-time games, the "most powerful-shot" game thing this season was a joke. Stop the awful remix of singing the blues, bring back the old one.

Switch the lower tier North Stand with te away fans in the Cobbold. Lock the gates at the end of the season for Jewellio's lap of (dis)honour, Free tomatoes for all fans.

A giant TV screen where the one between the Sir Alf and Cobbold stands is.

All seater stadiums have been the death knoll for pre-match atmosphere. There is no longer any need to get in early as you know exactly where you will be sitting. Hence people are staying in the bars or turning up at the ground with 5 minutes to spare and then take up their seats as the game is about to kick off.

There is no better atmosphere than when two sets of supporters are chanting, but this will not come back whilst: 1) the away fans are so far away from the North Stand 2) the ground is only a quarter full with 15 minutes to kick off.

Whilst I would like to see the music scrapped altogether, Tuesday nights against Barnsley will seem like it is being played in a morgue without it.

What needs to be addressed is finding a song that ITFC can call their own. I think there is some merit in a version of 'My Way'. Until we have a song how about a medley of tunes to songs that we do sing, just the Karoke version so we can put our own words to. Like, Hey Jude, Ebenezer Good, Singing the blues, etc.

And as for half time entertainment, how good was it to see those disabled kids having a kick about the other day? More of the same please!

1. Shifting the away fans would be great so there is a challenge to the SBR Stand singers to keep going longer (as away fans always seem to be more up for it). At least then they wouldn't keep attacking the SAR stand for not singing.
2. If you can't shift the away fans for 'policing' reasons (which seems lame as away fans always used to be the west side of the North Stand when I first went in the 'old' days) how about recirculating the noise from the SBR stand to the sound system in the SAR stand, which would give some noise for the away fans to react to and might encourage the SAR stand to join in to get cohesive singing throughout. Add in the other two stands later if that works.
3. Cheaper tickets across the board. Bradford have £150 season tickets and sell far more than they ever would at £300 a pop and get massive gates for League Two as a result. Don't just discount matchday tickets as it alienates ST holders.
4. Decent music would help. It isn't rocket science to sort out something everyone can follow.

I agree the atmosphere was much better when the away fans were in the North stand.....Why don't the North stand crowd move THEMSELVES to the South stand to be near the Away fans???...

Move the away fans to the opposite end of the cobbold. the atmosphere would improve so so much.

Langdon_Blue added 13:56 - Apr 26
...the crowd noise coming from the South stand would also be heard in the changing rooms, if that was the case...and might just get the players up for it too.

A few comments on the north stand lower:-

> Get someone to clean the parcel tape off the wall of the planet blue end, it's been there for 18 months (since a banner was stuck up there)
> Come up with a permanent solution to the grotty tarpaulins at the back of the stand, or at least buy some new blue ones to replace the filthy and tatty norwich yellow ones
> Do something about the lack of a properly working PA system in the stand, I don't know if it is even turned on but I can't hear a thing
> Sort the flaking paint underneath the upper tier, it looks a mess
> Get rid of Bobby Swift, who have the worst odds I've ever seen, not a single bet worth having all season
> Serve slices or a mini version of the portman pie in the bars below the stand for those of us that don't frequent the alf ramsey suite

I'm sure some people will see these things as unimportant, but it would be nice if the club paid attention to these kind of details as a way to show us fans that we are important to them. I have a feeling that some of the above would never be left unattended in the more "premium" sections of the ground.

1) Get rid of singing the blues, so lame compared to other clubs pre match song.
2) Move away fans back down towards North Stand
3) Cheaper tickets = Bums on seats = better atmosphere
4) Why do we need to manufacture noise when a goal is scored with the lame 'goal music'? Just because other clubs do it.
5) Pre match and half time entertainment has been pants for ages....

1. Ball Boys. Get them trained up, like they have at Barca. The ball goes straight back, there is no rest for the opponents. The quick tempo will stop the crowd from getting bored while we wait 5 minutes for the kid to get up and walk towards the ball.

2. Pre Match Music. Get rid of the rubbish remix thing and play some better known songs tht people can join in with and create a bit of noise.

3. Away fans to the other end of the Cobbold Stand for the obvious reasons.

4. Cheaper tickets, £20/£25 with anyone under 10 being allowed in for free with an adult. They are the future.

5. The disabled kids game was fantastic a few weeks back. The away fans got involved, the crowd were cheering and the kids loved it. This should happen every week, weather permitting.

6. Give tickets away to schools, when I was in Year 10, my school got 50 or 60 tickets and filled up a coach. I had a season ticket but lots of people went and some still go if I ask them. Aim at all ages, primary schools, high schools maybe even colleges. May stop the 'I support Manchester United by watching them on TV' rubbish from lots of youngsters.

7. Big screen where the score board is by Cobbold/Alf Ramsey. Maybe show previous Town goals against our opposition, we can cheer them and it creates a bit of an atmosphere before the game started.

8. I do like how the players are made to applaud the crowd before running back into the tunnel after finishing the warm up. Fair play to Chris Hutchings for this, seemed like it was his idea and he des make the players run back in. Maybe get a few of the players to try and get the crowd going a bit, by raising their arms trying to up the noise level (which could be done while we have corners etc, other players do it but never ours). It's not hard for people to shout 'BLUE ARMY'.
