Town Topic: What Could Improve Matchdays at Portman Road?
Town Topic: What Could Improve Matchdays at Portman Road?
Thursday, 24th May 2012 07:48

Town are looking for ways of improving the Portman Road matchday experience ahead of next season and want to hear fans’ ideas.

What do you want to see before the game? What sights or sounds as the players take to the field? And what about at half-time entertainment?

What’s impressed you elsewhere at other clubs in the UK or abroad, or even at other sports? Add anything you’d like to see introduced at Portman Road below and we’ll pass them on. And yes, they know about winning more matches.

A few suggestions, the first of which I think is a must:

- Move the away fans nearer to the North Stand, creates a much better atmosphere and wouldn't be hard to police/steward. Why can so many other stadiums do it and not us?
- We need an anthem of some sort. Singing the blues is useless, look at the atmosphere Liverpool/Man City/and the scum up the road create signing their anthem before the players come out? The club should select 10 songs and ask the fans to vote, then play it EVERY game before the players come out.
- Cheaper season tickets would entice more fans to commit their support for the season, cheaper match day tickets just annoys season ticket holders who spend the hard earned cash upfront at the start of the season. Our season tickets are more expensive than a lot of Premier League clubs. If we could sell 20,000 season tickets at £350 - £400 say, the club as a whole would be better off.
- As for half time entertainment, surely there's a role for Jimmy Bullard when he's out of the squad? The guy is a comedian. Otherwise, I think most fans either head for the bar or check their phones for the half time scores elsewhere, so games such as the hardest shot etc are just ignored and a waste of time.

I agree Tristan_Tractor... An Anthem is a must, why do the club not select a few songs and let us choose? They seem to show no care towards this. We need an anthem to call our own pre match and when we are losing games and the players need a 12th man. And ofcourse moving the away fans would help a great deal also. Something needs to get done about both of these issues as a priority ( other issues also need addressing ) but for me the atmosphere would improve a great deal if these 2 things were changed first and formost.

What can we do about this anyone?

Forget the music. It is a complete myth that people need music to enjoy an event. The only noice we should listen to is the hopes, fears, predictions, moans and banter of the fans - or perhaps some singing or chanting

*More variety of food; Chilli, Curry, Tandoori chicken wings etc - move away from the gruel they usually dish up. Maybe make one of the kiosks in each stand designated to selling such foodstuffs to the more discerning customer;
*Increase number and IQ of staff behind bar/food areas
*Raise the height of TV's in Upper North so people can actually see them
*NO goal celebration music
*Designated smoking area - some clubs do this
* Sack the midget steward in upper north
*Get rid of Tractor Boy image - it is demeaning
* Put an escalator in the North Stand
* Ban the two idiots in front of me.
* Put blue carpeting between pitch line and barriers, it will look nice.
* Put more metal pillars in away fan section thus restricting their view

NO BL**DY DRUMS !!
NO BL**DY DRUMS !!
NO BL**DY DRUMS !!

The day a drummer starts inside Portman Road is the day I tear up my season ticket of 40 years standing !!

Big screen would be good, a tannoy system that we can actually hear in the Brittania Stadium would be even better !!

Kids football at half time sounds like a winner, and would encourage a new generation of fans.

Banning loud halers outside the ground - that bloke who walks up and down uttering total nonsense makes me CRINGE !!!! AAAAARGHH !!!

I forgot to add - never, ever, ever play 'singing the blues' again. It is ludicrous!

so ive just read every comment, yes i have time on my hands!
1. Move the away fans next to the Sir Bobby.
2.Stop shi**y half time entertainment and entertain us during the game.
3.Lets have some better pre-match music as well as a headliner just before. 'My Way' is an excellent idea, could be the new anthem. Its similar to the very best and has a bit of history.
4.Lower the ticket prices.
5.Stop having all the terrible cringy things like that loudspeaker bloke outside, and if that seems a bit harsh to him- if people want noise then they can start up a chant of their own.
6. WE THE FANS!!!! Need to stop being pu**ys and start some noise up ourselves in the ground!! If you're sitting with everyone around you being quiet then stand up and start shouting and people will join in! Let's show some leadership, it only takes one person!

Lads and Ladettes, its been a shocker this season, but if we can make the sacred ground of Portman Road a fortress then who knows what could happen.

let's make the players proud to play in front of us fans and make them fall in love with the club!

Like point 6 John Portman, we all moan about the lack of atmosphere but I bet we could all do more. Atmosphere creation is like the chicken or the egg, should the team lead the fans or the fans lead the team.

I'd rather like a different beer to Carlsberg at half time, esp as will prob be paying £3.80 a pint next season!

Relocate the club to Cornwall

Not that any of these will go anywhere as we live in a nanny state but here's a list which will dramatically improve it:

1 - In the words of NWA, f**k the police! Move the away fans back to the other end of the Cobbold stand so they are nearer the North stand. Keep them in after the game for 10 minutes if the police are worried about problems!

2 - Allow us to bring in large scale banners, flags, flares anything of that magnitude that will add further colour and ambience...

3 - Let us drink beer on the terraces once more. Ridiculous we have to guzzle down stairs for 15 minutes in a quick fashion. Surely the club will make more money!

4 - Terracing in the North Stand!!!

(All of the above points are clearly out of ITFCs hands but it's about time football fans voiced an opinion on why their beloved institutions are morgues every weekends!!)

5 - 'My Way' - what happened to this? PLay it in memory of Booby at the start of every half or at least a rendition of it. No idea why this was scrapped? Was it because it was too long!? The longer and more regularly it's played the more people will learn it, adopt it and the more it will become synonymous with ITFC. Lets have our own anthem ala big and great clubs like Man City, Liverpool etc...and what better than My Way!

6 - Not too interested in half-time entertainment. I you do insist with something, how about a giant screen with audio of footballing matters. Old glory day highlights from corresponding fixtures in the past or one on one interviews with players from the 60s, 70s, 80s and so on...
I'd rather hear from/see them than watch a majorette twirl a baton in the air or a 14 year old struggle to lift the ball off the deck from a penalty.

Digital. Digital. Digital. We're in the digital age so lets start thinking like it rather than these weird cabaret type penalty performances on field. With mobile technology there's plenty of fan interaction we could also do! If you want help with this then let me know as this is what i do for a living!

7 - Songs! Is there anyone out there who can start to give us some decent chants!? Where did the Sun Ji Park one come from at United!? We need better chants to get people involved. I opt not to sing some as they're rubbish. Half of our chants only have limited life span and momentum which is why they die out so quickly.

8 - Get a census from fans on who wants to sing and get them altogether somehow. About time we had a core group in unison.

9 - Slightly reduced or incentivised prices for those who want to sing in the North Stand?

All of this will improve atmosphere and if we want to become a big club again, attract big players and become successful by making Portman Road a fortress then these things need to happen. Clubs should fear going to PR, not 'enjoy' it as some managers state in their post-match interview. it's all too nicey nice and while this it's great being a family club we've gone too far that way and a balance needs to be found.

Phil, can we get a committee together that meets with Clegg? I'd like to be on it as i've got loads to say about this!!

...and another one. How about showing us the highlights of the under 18s and reserve team midweek games in the bar areas or on the giant screens at half time? The vast majority of us don't get to see these games so would be good to keep in touch with what's happening and what players are like.

I know it's a small thing (and probably a rather personal thing!) and yet I really, REALLY wish that no music was blaring out of the speakers when we score! I find this manipulative and contrived and very 'corporate'. I can manage to muster my very own enthusiasm and noise and emotions during/after a goal...

Some bubbles in my half time pint (They could clean the lines more often too..)

Unity in the SBR lower. Its all well and good calling for Atomsphere but half the people in there grumble if any songs are started because they "dont like them" or they arent the "old favourites".
All i see on here in the Forum is "those annoying guy singing cr*p at the back" or "the group of guys in front of me dont shut up" losing battle...
Norwich have the... **cough cough** snakepit... which is a designated area for noisier fans. We need an equivalent in the SBR. Someone mentioned a cup game noisy fans SBR area trial. Thats achieveable.
P.S move the away fans!

tiredandbored added 15:56 - Apr 26
How about non designated seating in certain blocks of the ground.
Those who want to sing can then congregate in those areas.
I know you SBR'ers won't believe it, but there are some SAR'ers who do try to make a noise, trouble is we are in among empty seats and people who don't want to get off their feet, and make it rather hard to get anything going.
I have asked the club about trying other seating areas but was told no can do.
So, that means I have a one off opportunity to move, at season ticket renewal time.

I think 'My Way' instead of that awful embarrassing 'Singing The Blues' would be good, especially if people sung that because you simply cannot sing that horrendous song. Moving the away fans back to the North stand would also be good, try and get it back to the olden days when you couldn't hear the old lady cough in Brittania upper.

Thank you "Lukeybluey," but please note that your Fucik recording (yes, that really is the name of the composer!) was almost at half speed, more andante than allegro alas. Great post though!

A suitably speeded-up version of that very march was indeed played as the teams went on to the pitch in the late 50s and in the 60s - possibly even later?? Believe it or not, it felt exciting, even exhilarating, then.

At half time in the 60s the most popular music was "Glad All Over" and "Bits and Pieces," both by the Dave Clark Five - mainly because for many games it was so darned cold that these pop songs made you stamp your feet and so avoid frostbite.

I fully agree with "thechangingman" in that any music to accompany a goal is an insult to our fans' intelligence.

By the way, Brighton's atmosphere at our 3-0 defeat was much better than usual (for the home fans)because of the idiotic banner that some of our fans so foolishly put on show. I know this only too well because I was sitting in the home fans section, disguised as a seagull, most unhappily. So, to improve the atmosphere at PR I suggest that away fans should display suitably silly digs at ITFC.

what do the youth teams do on a saturday? why not have some sort of on pitch open training for 15 mins, just something simple..... i think it has numerous benefits....
Fans get to see the youngsters and see how they look
Youngsters get to go on pitch infront of 16 to 20k people, they might be a bit more commited to success with us if they feel that buzz?

Maybe even have a 7 a side match with them, different age playing each match......

A BIG SCREEN
long overdue, even Colchester has that luxury!! Has many uses unlike our rubbish scoreboads.
I would quite like to put a hammer through them. They only have use as a scoreboard so why bother with full colour? huge waste of money.
you cant see anything other than txt on that aspect ratio.
Public licence for using music channels or sky sports news. That'll do me for half time.

Totally agree with suggestions of "My Way" being played before the players come out. Could really catch on as an anthem and being close to sir bobby it has Ipswich legacy behind it. Could this be put forward to the club?

casanovacrow added 17:04 - Apr 26
cut a deal with radio suffolk. get them to do their half time run through at the ground with some fan interaction/comments on the utter dross they would have just watched for 45mins. With any luck Jewell might hear some of it in the dressing room and have a eureka moment

Cheaper ticket, beer, food, and pre-match music right before kickoff. Also moving the away fans next to the Sir Bobby Robson end would liven things up.
