Wickham Linked With Town Return
Wickham Linked With Town Return
Sunday, 29th Apr 2012 10:12

Former Blue Connor Wickham is being linked with a summer return to Town by reports in the North-East. The 19-year-old joined Sunderland last summer for an initial fee of £8.1 million but has made only six starts and 12 sub appearances this season, scoring one goal.

Blues boss Paul Jewell is said to have previously enquired about the possibility of Wickham returning on loan two months after the striker’s move but with then-Black Cats manager Steve Bruce not keen.

However, current boss Martin O’Neill is believed to be more open to the idea of a temporary switch, feeling that the England U21 international needs to play more first team football before he is ready to be a regular in the Premier League with Town likely to head the clubs interested in taking him.

Jewell said on Thursday that he has already made enquiries about bringing Premier League players in on loan for next season: “That’s one route that we’re looking at. The problem is getting in quickly. I spoke to a club yesterday about a couple of their young players and the queue’s a mile long.”

I agree with the lads who said he was slightly overerated for what he done for the club. He was good at holding the ball up and we have scotland and Murphy who can do that just as well . But he is not a proven scorere. If he comes and his wages are cheap.....fair enough.

Didnt I read somewhere That we had most shots on Traget in the whole division thi season ? 305 before yesterday.

What we need is a fox in the box.....A pony Tailed Poacher........ A Retard in the 18 Yard........A ......hold on, no.

No thanks!!

I think the last two or three seasons have proven that loanees is not the way to go. I would rather settle for mid-table mediocrity in the short-ish term using our own youngsters and promising youngsters bought from the lower leagues - you know - the way way we used to do it here!

PJ is mental. Doesn't anyone at ITFC worry about the drivel he keeps pumping out. Every statement now has fundamental contradictions in them. If he wants to mess about with Prem clubs like he did last year we will end up with the dregs again.

There are plenty of managers that can find the right players for their club. They accept they have a buget, which division they're in and Know if they need a centre back or a goalkeeper Jewellio hasn't accepted any of this and that is why we can't sign anyone.

He is the wrong manger at the wrong club. Please move on or will he flounce off back to Bradford for personal problems and so he can play with all his Prem mates?

What exactly would Wickham do to benefit the team? Unless he can play at centre back or in goal he'd be no use whatsoever, he's not a natural goal scorer and is no good in the air and is not pacey so what would be the point? Lets move on and sign players we actually need.

I don't think that bringing Wickham back on loan is the answer, (unless an agreement to sign him was in place if we did achieve promotion next season), or buying him back for that matter even if we could afford him.
It would deprive the team of finding a permanent striker.
Does anyone know if he has developed from his time with Sunderland?
If he cannot command a place in their team it would appear not.
Not the 20 goals a season player we are looking for.
Jewel has more on his plate than looking for another striker.
There must be no messing around, the defence has been an utter shambles this term. Sataurday, listening to the match on Radio Suffolk every time Sonko's name was mentioned you could imagine the mess he was going to make of playing the most simplest of passes. Here is a player who is no longer at the club, playing only because we have no other cover for that position.
It's these type of situations that have to be addressed if we are to avoid a relegation fight again next season.
I for one have no real faith in that happening, hope that I am proved wrong.

Yep agreed not sure if he's right for us, not a prolific scorer - what we need IS a prolific scorer with Wickham alongside him to hold the ball up or to get on the knock downs, and I don't mean Chopra (his best days are behind him).If we could get Wickham on loan for 6 months and a goal scorer (a hungry one) then great!

I can't see this happening. Frankly, unless it is a season long loan it would also be pointless. PJ has constantly re-assured us that he has learnt from his mistakes and told us that he won't be relying on LOANS or OLDER players. We need to BUILD a team not just for next year, but the future - PJ didn't on the whole do that last pre-season. One or two season long loans would be okay - but for a couple of months? No - not IMO. Not good for a settled side.

Agree with Gazelle though - priority must be the defence. Even yesterday the goals we conceeded were laughable! A GK, 2 x CB and a RB must be signed as soon as possible. Only then should we look to boost the attack and find replacements for Murphy and Leadbitter (Stevenson may already be that man!).

Why? A flat no from me. I don't want any loan players next season especially inexperienced ones. If we're going to the Prem we need to build a solid base with a side that can play for us for years to come. Loans and inexperienced players are not the way forward. There's no chance of us signing him so what's the point?

Get the cheque book out and move for a Evans, Rhoades type player...

I wouldn't mind if he came back. In attack we have Chopra, Scotland, Ellington and Murray. Chopra is our number one with Scotland as backup. Then we have Ellington who has done nothing and has been poor. Next we have Murray who has done well at Swindon this year and will hopefully get a few games next season but overall we our not very strong in attack so I would be happy if we got Wickham on loan or signed a young player from the lower leagues who has potential such as Madine

Chopra is our 20 goal a season man. (I know he's never actaully scored more than 20 in a season and he averages about 10 goals a year.)

Sorry to say this, and I'm not necessarily saying we should get wick ham, but was it not Henri LANSBURY that tore most of the other championship teams apart for Norwich. And he was ON LOAN FROM A PREM TEAM. Some on here are deluded that a good team can't have loan signings in. Yes we need to build the main squad with our own players, unlike last few seasons.. But loan signings to supplement this with quality is v good too. Bolton, IN THE PREM still sign loan signings each year so get real! Secondly, why do you think there is a queue a mile long of championship clubs no doubt for these players?!?! Are all of those managers wrong too and your right? Unbelievable most people on here.

I agree with most, that he is not worth bringing back for a loan. I would like to see us go for Stuart Beavon from Wycombe, over 20 goals for a side that got relegated. Would be worth a punt and would like the chance to prove himself at a higher level.

Samvoller, I get your point but using Bolton as your example is not adding a great deal of weight to it..!

Lansbury did well cos he, it hurts me to say this, was playing in a good team, so the oposition had all players to worry about rather than 1 or 2.

TimmyH added 12:13 - Apr 29
Personally haven't been that impressed with Chopra, ok he's in the team to score goals but there have been periods he hasn't done that and hasn't contributed much to games either, will he improve? I doubt it. As mentioned the defence comes first, and then consider our striking options but whether that is Wickham is doubtful.

samvoller added 12:29 - Apr 29
Hoppers blue, very good point you make about both Lansbury and Bolton! I guess my point was that we shouldn't just disregard loans because of past experiences.. Murphy and colback are both good examples of long term loans that have benefited us, and if we can get a good side, then that little extra quality could be pivotal, just like I believe lansbury was to norwich promotion last year.

Welcome addition. I think he can do a job any of the front three positions in our 4231 formation.

But if he plays striker then he needs to work on his heading. We have good supply from cress, Edwards and drury.

Jewwwwell has had 18 months to get the foundation of a team. Lots of people say you need a strong spine from goalkeeper, CB , MF and up front.

We have... Oh dear, we're starting again.

I don't think Wickham is the answer. Jordan Rhodes is the answer! I really don't want any loan players either. How much funding is there going to be this summer?
Hopefully in the region of 4 million would be good. To be fair to PJ apart from Cresswell, Chops, and jet he hasn't spent massive money on transfers. I just hope Marcus Evans backs him finacially.

There is no guarantee that Murphy will be here next season.Wickham would be an ideal replacement for him on a season long loan.He will be older, stronger and desperate to play regular football. If he helped us back into the Premiership who is to say we might not be able to buy him back.
And as for loan players from the Premiership I have no objection to young and hungry ones coming to the club as long as its only one or two. Scott Sinclair is a perfect example of a good loan:season long and when they were promoted they were able to buy him from Chelsea.
I think Wickham is potentially a great player but he needs to play regular football and O'Neill knows that. I think there is every chance Connor will be back here next season and I would be very very happy if he was.

Wickham back on loan? It does make you wonder if anyone at the club has learnt anything from the debacle of the last few seasons. We are IPSWICH supporters, we want IPSWICH players, playing for IPSWICH, so they give a flying F**K about what kind of season IPSWICH ultimately has because their livlihood depends on it.
Anyway, Wicham would be the answer to precisely none of our current problems - unless he can play in goal or central defence.

It would be great but he's only gonna be a loan player!
We need permanent young signings. Then again what a player wickham is on his day. I feel it's gonna be a frustrating summer again 4 us bringing players in.
