Portsmouth's Ward Unsure on Future
Portsmouth's Ward Unsure on Future
Monday, 30th Apr 2012 11:29

Town target Joel Ward says he doesn’t know where his future lies with the Portsmouth summer fire sale getting under way. Central defender Jason Pearce, who was targeted by the Blues in January, is set to complete his switch to Leeds today, while Greg Halford is being chased by a number of Championship clubs.

Ward, whose agent spoke to Paul Jewell last week but is yet to talk to owner Marcus Evans, says he’s in the dark about where he’ll be playing his football next season: “I don’t know what’s going on. The club have said there will have to be players that have to leave.

‘But it’s not in my hands. I don’t know [whether my future lies elsewhere]. I’ve been here a long time. I’ve started my career here and had great times here.”

A local lad, Ward admits that it will be hard to move on: “I’ve been at the club since I was eight and I’m now 22.

“I’m from this area. I want to see the club back on its feet and move forward. It’s out of my hands and I really don’t know what is going to happen.”

I would really like to see us get this lad, Portsmouth fans rate him very highly. He would provide us a much needed utility option.

I wouldn't mind Greg Halford as well, he can literally play anywhere, brilliant for Colchester when they got promoted to the championship.

How come Leeds are signing Pearce today but someone Jewell has been after since Jan ,already talked to is no nearing to signing for us ? Sort it out early and give the manager time for a good pre season to hit the ground running next year .For the last 3 seasons we have been doing deals into Aug and September thats a quarter of the season gone

To be fair last summer we did do most of our business early, it was just a shame some of it was the wrong business, e.g Ellington, Bowyer, Ingimarsson. On the other hand though we also snapped up Chopra, Cresswell and Emmanuel Thomas around the same time.

I often wonder if I'll die in my sleep or awake in a traumatic accident.
Don't worry, Joel. I think we're all a little unsure of the future. Otherwise we'd all be winning the lottery every week.

To be honest, we all love ITFC, but players from different areas of the country will look for two things.....potential and of course financial reward for signing. I'm not sure if we are well placed in either of those things though, as we have been a Championship team for 10 years and half of that time mid table or worse. I think our future lies with lower league players and youth, we need to stop trying to buy our way out of trouble, as for far it has failed miserably!!

Glad Pearce has gone to Leeds, never felt he was the answer to our problems.

I'm the opposite CostalBlue, i felt he could have been just the defender and leader we're looking for. As we haven't been linked with any player of that ilk so far, i'm a little worried as to who else is in the offing!

I can only assume as PJ identified him in Jan, ME said 'no way' to the 1.5million tag! Coincidentally...i thought Leeds had no money which is why Grayson had to sell of players!!! Good ol' Ken Bates....still an absolute w**ker!!

Would've rather had Pearce, he's actually better than what we already have in the side ...unlike Ward.

Just waiting for something better to come along it seems to me, just like Pearce was...it's very simple, yes or no and you have 24 hours to make your mind up, it didn't take Leeds United very long to secure Pearce did it.

We will not be signing anybody who requires a decent fee, I don't believe there is any money, much more likely to be a free transfer, also anybody expecting Jewell to act quickly will be disappointed, he is clueless and I would have thought most on here would have realised that by now

He said he didn't want to come to the club 3 months ago. That should have been the end of the story.

I think some of you need to lighten up on PJ. It seems to me he now has a very limited budget available both in terms of transfer fees and wages. Leadbitter walked because Town couldn't (or wouldn't) pay what he and his agent feel he's worth. I'm not losing sleep over his departure but it worries me that PJ doesn't seem to rate Hyam.
I'd like to see Ward join us - he obviously has a lot of attachment and loyalty to Pompey and that's understandable but financial realities mean he will have to ply his trade elsewhere from now on - I can only admire his loyalty. Let's hope he comes to us and we can engender some of that loyalty to us.
Unfortunately loyalty these days seems to be something that is bought - I don't bame the lads for that: they have a limited career and need to do the best for themselves and their families (who should be their first loyalty).
All of you that talk of 'playing for the badge' and other such nonsense - I trust if your employer was unable to pay your wages you'd still turn up and work for the 'badge'?? Somehow I doubt any of you so give the players a break too: their profession or trade is as footballers and they will offer their services for the best reward they can negotiate.
Writing this has just made me realise something: we need a team of young and hungry players with the likes of Bullard to steady the ship: Young and under-rated they'd form a real team and some stars would emerge. Look at Blackpool, NCFC, Soton etc, etc. In fact look back to the mid 1970s and Sir Bobby's teams.
One final thought and I don't advocate sacking managers every year or two but Lee Clarke please- that would be the transfer deal of the season for us! (And put him on a 3/4/5 year contract giving him some security to rebuild the mess ITFC has become)

Money will usually talk, hopefully we can offer a competitive contract and see what happens. The agents will always push the odds up though, can't be easy to know definitely what other clubs have offered and make sure you're not just getting bluffed.
Halford would be perfect, right back or centre back, just what we need. Would need pretty decent money offered as well though I reckon.
