Smith Signs New Deal
Smith Signs New Deal
Wednesday, 16th May 2012 08:38

Central defender Tommy Smith has signed a new two-year deal with the Blues. The New Zealand international’s current contract was due to end on June 30th.

The 22-year-old, whose new deal includes an option for a further season, says he’s pleased to commit his future to the club he joined on leaving school at 16, although he admits that at one stage it looked like his time with Town might be coming to an end: "I'm obviously delighted to have signed the contract and sorted out my future.

“When I wasn't in the squad for a few months, it crossed my mind that I may have to move on. That's not something I wanted to happen. I got my head down though, worked hard and changed the manager's views of me.

"It was a year of ups and downs but I was pleased with how I performed at the back end of the season - and how we played as a team as well. There were definite signs of progress and I think we reaped the benefits of having a settled side

"It's important we start next year well. We've not done that for a while but there are a lot of positives we can take from the way we finished the season and I'm looking forward to being involved."

Doctor Albran. In spite of missing out on Kevin Phillips (now that is real history) are you still not prepared to learn from experience? Yes, it was a brilliant finish but do I take it that all the other forty odd goals he has scored this season were down to poor defending as well then? COYB

good news. he's young and will improve. but agree he needs an experienced partner, with delaney to push him hard

agree with two years. he's done enough to earn a new contract. if he delivers next year we can sign him up again, if not we're not voer committed

Great news think he will improve with each game he plays. We still need to sign two decent centre halfs though.

According to the Star website, Smith has signed a 2-year deal with the option of a 3rd year (presumably based on making x number of appearances).

I think Edwards has signed (has he?) so it's now just Scotland whose contract is running out, plus Martin who has a year left but has to sign or be sold if we have learned the lessons from Norris, McAuley and Leadbitter.

Good for you Tommy...well done! You have really earned this and are still learning and developing. Also you have the potential to become a cornerstone of the team.
It is most evident that a major differentiator for Football League clubs under the new rules will be those that are successful in developing many of their own players. We're off to a good start.
Great news!

Marshalls_Mullet: We are not man city with pots and pots of cash! wake up and smell the coffee, do you want us to get in the same mess we did when we signed all them players in the 2nd season of the premiership in 2001?

Strange that a lot of the regular posters haven't commented on this story ! If the headline had been Smith stalls on new contract we would have pages of comments by now. Great news, let's hope he can kick on and fulfill his potential.

The truth is walberswick Ipswich has never been a club where we pay players 30k a week and to right to, as i think its outrageous how some players get a week like 50k or even 100k a week. A player that wants to play for us would be reasonable, granted Simon clegg sometimes is a bit of a tight git but I can see where he is coming from. Tommy Smith is a good player, he needs our support not some so called fans putting him down.

HUZZAH we're on a role now boys! Ipswich-Crazy remember it's Evans that ultimately dictates transfer policy with regards to wage structure. He's most probably sought advice on this front, certainly not from Clegg. If Clegg were tasked with signing a player for £100k a week then he'd undoubtedly do so.

Where Clegg has possibly failed to deliver is in his enthusiasm and ability to sell the club to prospective players. This is I imagine the central part he has to play in transfer dealings: convincing player and agent that Ipswich is the most attractive move. Obviously money has a large part to play in this, but if Clegg fails to sign someone on this basis then who can blame him? Why should anyone be blamed, for that matter? Throw money at your targets and you'll be exploited by selling clubs for years to come: imagine the price Cisse may have fetched if Man City had been sniffing around him and not Newcastle.* We need to be sensible and if you can't recognise the investment Evans has already made then perhaps you need to look again. This is not to support, defend or criticise the manner in which he's approached investment since he's arrived, but to question the amount of dosh he's already sunk into itfc would be amiss.

That we're in competition with a host of other clubs for various signatures is simply a sign that we're offering competitive contracts. We're a mid-table championship club in an average location - we unsurprisingly lack the pulling power to dive in and seize a target without throwing stupid money about. The likelihood that we'll lose out on all the players we've been linked with is similar to the chances of us signing them all. Providing the marketing team isn't a complete shambles (we've had enough practice at signing players in the last few years!) then some players should come. Equally many inevitably won't - imagine if you were a footballer with the whole summer to reflect on a move and sigificant interest from many clubs in the same league: would you make an instant move or weigh up the field a bit? Common sense chaps, COYB

*could have had a buy-out clause, not necessarily the best example

doctor albran, just another example of some1 who comments without clearly having read the story correctly. we wont have to renegotiate next year because he has signed a 2 year deal with the option of a third. so unless at some point he decides otherwise a third year is already agreed.

Having smith signed up is also good from the respect that he plays international football for a relatively weak side in new zealand. Any sniffs of talent being up for grabs and we might be in with a shout of snaffling them up.
