Cheerleaders to Return to Portman Road
Cheerleaders to Return to Portman Road
Wednesday, 23rd May 2012 09:52

Town are looking for cheerleaders for the 2012/13 season as they make changes to their matchday entertainment, including adding a dance routine at half-time.

Club secretary Sally Webb said: “Obviously our priority is to find a winning formula on the pitch that will provide entertainment for the fans.

“But as a club, we are looking at various ways of adding to the matchday experience for supporters coming to Portman Road.

“We are talking to the fans and will be doing so more over the next few weeks to gauge opinions as we look to change things around for next season.

“We’ve had cheerleaders before and they were very popular so we’re now on the lookout for a new group to become part of our matchday team.”

If you are part of an existing dance group and would like to become the club’s cheerleaders or are an individual who fancies the challenge of putting a group together, contact Jade Cole or Julie Bryant at the club by email. A link to video footage would be beneficial.

Alternatively, post a DVD of your group in action to Jade or Julie at Press Office, Ipswich Town Football Club, Portman Road, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP1 2DA.

The Blues are welcome to suggestions for improving their matchday entertainment with a TWTD Town Topic on the subject here.

Yeah, I know it's at an egg chasing venue, but the quality shown by these girls is pretty good and helps to forget about the dross on the field during games.

Personally, I'd like to see kids playing at HT and pre-match

Well its got to be better than the drivel served up last season !!!!

bring back the little kids who had a game of five a side during the break they entertained, and all the supporters got behind them !!

Perhaps a game at each end of the pitch !!!

If its a p...poor excuse to get scantily clad women dancing around before the game its a massive no. Its 2012! Most of the players are a bad enough example to the kids/adults watching as it is without getting dancing girls as well.

If its a community or even professional team that allows everyone (all ages, sexes) to get involved and promotes fitness and healthy living then probably a small no.

Alternatively put the emphasis on the crowd to make the atmosphere and get them involved in the pre-match build up (as long as it isnt dancing in short skirts).

I think Phil needs to put up a poll with the main suggestions from the old post on. See how few people would prioritize cheerleaders and more to the point see how out of touch the club are getting

Now we return to one of my hobby horses: visual and vocal support of the team. The continent is WAY in front of the UK in this. One obvious example was the Bayern fans vs Chelsea. Perhaps - as all the foreign clubs have - we need a group of dedicated young supporters who are prepared to put some time and effort into designing a "tifo" (some kind of "happening" with flags/scarves/confetti/banderoles/whatever) before each match. OK, that too can seem a bit "staged" - it is, but the difference being it comes from the fans. Whatever is done, the answer is not the so-called pre-match entertainment we now have to put up with.

How about pole dancing in Planet Blue?

How about mobile stocks with ITFC officials taking centre stage, so we could all have a throw.

Yay. Finally Clegg does something right other than turnstile painting!
I have been campaigning for them to return for ages.

give us a winning team, and stop all this silly stuff including pre-match handshakes, kids with flags, 27 paying mascots, man of the match by dodgy box holders, ball boys who can't get off their arsenals and most of all marcus evans on the shirts - if we can't sell the space give it to the local hospice

A few weeks ago there was a posting about ideas for entertainment before games. I remember reading and contributing to this. Cheerleaders were never mentioned. The main points were changing the music before the games from the clips, bringing back the old version of 'Singing The Blues', and having more football related/atmosphere encouraging activities with gaps in music for the crow to fin their voice.

It feels as if supporters were consulted and then brazenly ignored. This is very poor form from the club especially when the power-distance between the executives and the club is under constant criticism. I fear this will be a missed PR opportunity. We don't need more PR failures.

djbreeze: Thanks for that one! Brilliant! Do you think they'd ever actually met each other before the day in question? As you put it, "nuff said!"

Im not too fussed what they do at half time. Im more concerned with the 45+ minutes before and 45+ minutes after!!
If they want to show cheerleaders i certainly wont complain!
I have said many times that the only way you will make portman road a noisy place once again is to move all the away fans to the other end of the Cobbold stand, Thats how it used to be and the atmosphere was amazing (We even had a lot smaller stand back then (north stand) and we still made more noise back then than the whole of the four stands put together now!
