Town and Celtic Set for Murphy Talks
Town and Celtic Set for Murphy Talks
Saturday, 2nd Jun 2012 20:20

TWTD understands that Town and Celtic will hold further talks regarding Daryl Murphy’s future next week. The 29-year-old looks set to rejoin the Blues on a permanent basis this summer having spent 2011/12 on loan at Portman Road for the second time.

Town boss Paul Jewell initially played down the chances of the Celtic frontman returning to the Blues but when speaking to TWTD a month ago chief executive Simon Clegg hinted that a deal could still be done.

The Bhoys are believed to want £300,000 for the striker or midfielder, who was previously on loan at Portman Road in 2010 when a Sunderland player, but ultimately could allow him to leave on a free transfer to get the remaining year of his contract off their wage bill. Murphy is likely to have to take a significant pay cut to return to Portman Road.

Murphy, who also had trials with the Blues in the 2004/05 season before opting to join the Black Cats from hometown club Waterford United, who we understand he joined for a couple of training sessions last week, made 32 starts and two sub appearances for Town during 2011/12, scoring four goals.

Sources close to Murphy have told TWTD that the nine-times-capped Irish international and his family are keen to stay in Suffolk.

Excellent inciteful comment from braveblue....so typical of so called fans that don't go to games.

Murphy is a quality player and will continue to do well next season if we manage to secure his signature on a longer term.

There are so many idiots that comment on the news comment its frightening!!!

Why are so many of you obsessed with players wages ? Its no worry of yours . Im sure the club will offer him what they believe he is worth and if thats not acceptable to him then he'l be off elsewhere . Would be happy for Murphs to come bk to portman rd . He may not be your typical pacey tricky winger but he sure does serve a purpose . His workrate , height , strength are atributes that any team needs in it and the fact that he can happily play up top or out wide is good versitility to have . I think just becuase he not a player who gets you off ya seat alot of people dont see the strength he brings in other ways . COYB !!!

For me he is a ok player, if his wages weren't to big, would be worth it, think he would be more useful in the middle as striker, as he holds the ball up better than Scotland does. Agree with some of the other posts we need more pace on the left, I'm afraid I don't think Carson is good enough, though to be fair needs a run of games in the first team.

Very average player doesn't seem a natural goal scorer. interesting to note after all the negative comments on here about scottish football the number of fans who want to sign this guy that celtic dont rate...move on jewell and look for some other signings...not excited at all about this..

I think, if we can get him for £300,000 or even a free transfer as some sources suggest this could be one of the steals of the summer. He has a lovely left foot on him, he is a hones hard working player who always gives 100%. He has also got the physical presence we need, can play in 2 or 3 different positions (personally i prefer him upfront) and has a quick turn of pace. No brainer, sign him up please.

Southampton are plotting a £2m raid for Millwall's 23-year-old midfielder Liam Trotter, who has also been linked with Fulham and Sunderland.

townietilidie - because some of us remember the ruin of administration and don't want to end up going the way of Portsmouth.

@ Guthrum .... Do you realy see that happening with a hugeley sucessfull multi millionaire businessman owning the club now ? We are lightyears away from being in portsmouths posistion . People go on about us being tight but we are just a sensible club who wont pay out for over priced players . And the fact that we seem to be about the only club taking the new financial ruling seriously puts us even further into a sound posistion .

@walberswick

I think we all know by now that we should have not sold Trotter or Rhodes or David Wright etc, but what can we do about it?

We should concentrate on the players we do have and the ones on the way in.

Harlem-blue... good post, Murphy very underrated by some on here. What people dont realise is his work rate off the ball, when Cresswell goes upfield, Murphy was always there providing defensive cover, that is a big help when you are a full back who likes to go forward, not something Jet always provided when playing wide, and we love him for his flair, skill and trickery. All players bring different qualities to the side. there are not many players that are the complete player.

Towntillidie... makes some very good points about his attributes also..coyb

Good signing, wins balls in the air and got a good cross. My only criticism is lack of pace as I think we need more pace in the side. Would be a fantastic signing for 300k or a free transfer.

Murphy is a funny one, its strange for a player for play for a whole season, yet divide opinion so much.

I think he would be a decent signing, but would much prefer him being played up front, and another winger brought in more suited to the role, little bit pacer, more skilful etc. Murphys main attribute last season was his aerial strength, just thought it seemed at some points like he was being shoe horned into the left winger position. His aerial ability and general strength in holding up the ball could see him being a good foil for Chopra if PJ chooses a 4-4-2 at some point.

The fact that we want to keep a settled team so we don't have to go through the "gelling" period says to me that he will be a good signing. I would like to see him played down the middle more with Chopra, i think you would then get the best out of both players.

thebeat added 10:59 - Jun 3
You cant play him down the middle, jewell shoved him out in the wing within a few games because he realised hes not good enough to be a striker.

There is real 'Polar' opinion about Murphy, some seem to love him and others don't. Seems from reading match reports that he has been a bit inconsistent last season. I'm not excited by the signing if he does sign, shame he chose Sunderland over us a few years back as years of reserve team football, there and at Celtic haven't improved him at all.

People say he has no pace. i dont agree, he is not fast but he is deceptively quick. Because he is tall andthe way he runs he kind of looks slow. watch him one on one with a fullback and he is not slow. Always gives 100% and tries his best. And is MILES better than carson.I really dont know what the fuss is about Carson on here, he has shown nothing. Maybe its because he is a "youth "

He did okay for us - and during his time with us under Roy. Would be a good signing - but not on big money. Would no doubt have to take a hefty pay cut to join us - as was on around £20K a week at Sunderland - let alone Celtic. However, understand he is settled in the area with childrens schools - so that may be a good driver for him. Would also be good to turn a 'loan' into a permanent - means we did waste a year.

If we don't get him it's another player we've got to get as a replacement and we don't seem to be getting anywhere with replacements at the moment.

Walberswick: I have just checked the distances on google maps between Ipswich and Walberswick - 33 miles. And Norwich and Walberswick - 32 miles. I think that you have been rumbled!!!
