Blackburn at Portman Road on Championship's Opening Day
Blackburn at Portman Road on Championship's Opening Day
Monday, 18th Jun 2012 09:00

Town will begin their 2012/13 Championship campaign with a home game against newly-relegated Blackburn Rovers on Saturday 18th August. The Blues will already have played Bristol Rovers at Portman Road in the Capital One Cup on a date yet to be set by the time the Lancastrians are in Suffolk with the season’s start pushed back due to the London Olympics.

Blues left-back Aaron Cresswell is clearly delighted to be taking on the former Premier League side on the Championship's opening day, tweeting: "First game of the season at home to Blackburn! Belter [of a] first game that!"

New signing Elliott Hewitt, who is out until October due to the hip operations he underwent last season while with Macclesfield, said he's looking forward to getting back into action: "Fixtures out! Can't wait to get going now!"

After the Rovers match, Town face a Tuesday 21st August trip to Watford, then make the long but seasonal journey to Blackpool on the following Saturday as what looks to be a challenging first month comes to an end.

September begins with a visit from Huddersfield (Saturday 1st), then after an international break, the Blues are off to Middlesbrough (Saturday 15th) with Wolves at Portman Road the following Tuesday (18th). A home game against Charlton (Saturday 22nd) and a trip to Barnsley (Saturday 29th) complete another tough-looking month.

The Christmas period sees Town face Bristol City at home on the preceding Saturday (December 22nd), then visit Charlton on Boxing Day and Wolves on Saturday 29th December. Brighton visit Portman Road on New Year’s Day.

Easter sees a home game against Leeds on Saturday 30th March, with a trip to Millwall on Easter Monday, April 1st, following.

The run-in continues with Derby away (Saturday 6th April), Hull at home (Saturday 13th April), Crystal Palace also at Portman Road (Tuesday 16th April), Sheffield Wednesday away (Saturday 20th April) and Birmingham at home (Saturday 27th April) before a final day visit to Turf Moor to take on Burnley (Saturday 4th May).

In addition to the early season match at Watford, midweek away games include a trip to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday 5th March, Brighton on Tuesday 2nd October and Crystal Palace on Tuesday 6th November.

The relatively short trip to Peterborough comes on Saturday 9th March with Posh at Portman Road on Saturday 24th November.

Town’s full 2012/13 fixture list can be found here with some dates and kick-off times likely to change due to TV coverage.

Tough season this year, I can't see a month where they are all easy games.

Far more sensible midweek away games for a change. Pity the Blackpool away match is a week before the lights go on. Looks a very tough start with half of the opening games against promoted or relegated Clubs. At the end of the day all games are tough we just need some decent signings now to give us a chance.

A tough start, but then again the Championship is tough. We need to make a quick start this year and challenge for the top 6.

Wow, heavy games in the beginning. We will probably win those and then relax too much and have a losing streak. Ah, well, let's win all of them instead.

Testing season ahead - nothing easy in that little lot, however we do have a habit of winning the tough games and losing the easy ones, so maybe this season will toughen us up and focus the lads minds. Onward and upward!

Looking at THAT list of opening games I am glad we have got a good nucleus of players that are learning to believe in one-another. If they continue in this vein footy life will be good this season.

Catch them with them with 'their pants down' on the first day of the season! As always going to be a competitive league.

We need to win this. Even with the new league set alphabetically we can't get past 15th.

Tough season ahead !! - nothing that was not known by all (other than morons) at the end of last season.
Has the action plan since then been active i.e Goalkeeper, Centre Back signings in preperation for such - NO - all very much as I guess one should have expected.

Or indeed, was there an action plan ? - again too much to expect I guess.

Do we really need to wonder why established, effective players don't want to come here ? - of course not.
