Chambers at Club as Kourouma Set to Sign
Chambers at Club as Kourouma Set to Sign
Tuesday, 3rd Jul 2012 10:50

TWTD understands that former Nottingham Forest skipper Luke Chambers is, as per reports last night, at Portman Road today to undergo a medical. The 26-year-old is a free agent with his Forest contract up at midnight on Saturday.

The deal to bring the one-time Northampton man to Town appears likely to be concluded in the next couple of days in time for the 6ft 1in tall defender to join Paul Jewell’s squad for the first day of pre-season training on Thursday.

The Blues may already have made French-Guinean Cheick Kourouma their second signing of the summer before Chambers puts pen to paper.

The 6ft tall central midfielder, who we understand to be back in Suffolk after the summer break, agreed terms with the Blues last month but without formally signing on the dotted line.

TWTD was first to break the news of Town’s interest in the youngster, who spent time on trial at Playford Road at the end of last season on the recommendation of released defender Ibrahima Sonko.

Kourouma, 19, was with Genoa CFC Primavera, Genoa’s U20 team, during the first half of last season having previously been in Spain with Real Zaragoza’s youth set-up and before that with French club Sochaux.

Although Paris-born Kourouma is a free agent, Town have had to agree development compensation terms with all three of his previous clubs as he is below 23 years of age.

Kourouma seems likely to have agreed a one-year deal, while Chambers is rumoured to be signing for three seasons.

Fantastic news, hope we can get this deal concluded. Right age, right position, bags of experience and a pretty good player, who has been playing for one of the better sides in our division over the past 3-4 seasons.

A back four of edwards, chambers, smith and cresswell is most pleasing. If we can bring in cover for cresswell and another centre back then we will have more then enough in defence.

good news about kourouma, admittedly know nothing about the lad but he's young and big and jewell has shown in the past he has an eye for a good young player so lets hope he turns out to be a good un.

for me, once these two have signed we are looking for 3 more first team additions - a number one keeper, a striker and possibly another midfielder. with davies from derby linked and a host of keepers linked I am confident we will have assembled a strong first team with strength in depth throughout the squad before the start of the season. very happy, bring it on, coyb!

intercept - yes his face does look green.

also, if we sign murphy (which i would be happy with) and davies from derby then all thats left is a keeper and some players to compete with first teamers and to flesh out the squad a bit.

have a sneaking suspicion, sonko may yet earn himself a new one year contract. if he's happy to stay and play for a very reduced wage, then he could provide the cover we need.

Clegg-knockers are thin on the ground in this thread - although kerryblue has it that Clegg has only become involved (therefore in danger of scuppering the deal) at the point where all the hard work's been doen and he's about to sign on the dotted line! You can't have it both ways kerryblue.

Good news... I'm sure we will still be in for another centre half, keogh being my prefered choice. No to sonks pls (very poor imo and my heart couldn't handle it). On the goal keeping front, Guzan pls... Loach albeit a blue i don't think has the quality listening to views elsewhere(here & watford). I expect a left sided player to be signed also, would prefer a younger faster version of Murphy on this one. As with a striker i'd like to see Davies to give us a different type of option.

To come : 1 Gk 1 CB 1MId (left) 1 Stiker

Two good signings although have not seen anything of Kourouma and only bits of Chambers, feel this is right age players to be targetting not players over 30.

I heard it from a Watford fan who are being managed by Zola this year and given a lot of cash, that Loach is an excellent keeper who had confidence issues last season. A change of scenery would do him good. For me he is perfect. A local lad with a lot of ability and something to prove. We are now the underdogs. "Jamaica!!! We have a bobsled team!"

Williams (29) and Okuonghae (26) would be great transfers from Col Utd. Both free, in their 20's, hungry for success and keen to move up the divisions, live locally already etc. I've read that Williams won a fair few individual awards a few years ago and was in great form this season again. While the 'Beast' as he is affectionately known dominates games: he's 6'3, quick and wanted by Celtic, Bolton and Blackburn

Stringtheory cast your mind back to the long line of players that have come to Portman Road in recent times for deals to be finalised and Clegg puts his foot in it and the players leave and we are left like fools, thats what im talking about and im sure at least 90 % of Town fans feel the same way and can remember ,there is always some numpty muppet like you who cant see things the way they are.Hopefully he signs but the longer the day goes on the more chance as has happened so much before of the deal being made a balls of by Clegg who is ruining our club and should slither back to the olympics .

Are his joints as bad as mine? Should have passed medical by now. Why does it take so long with us. Seems they like to torture the fans.

Irish Tim - Medicals can take a full day at the club in some cases, depending on what they find and what they need to explore further. Likewise, results might take time to come back if its a more in depth issue theyre looking into....... keep calm

Looks like we may have a good team for once!
A solid defence made up of Edwards, Chambers(hopefully),Smith and Cresswell.
A top midfield Martin, Hyam, Drury/Bullard and JET who I think will have a good year.
Then Chopra up front.
We only need a gk and a CF

Agree with ITFCforlife, it does look very promising and Paulsimmons are you mad? you dont have to spend real money on a player it usually ends up with egotistical players, i will be very pleased to see chambers in an ipswich shirt!

COYB!

This is exactly the kind of player that the club needs, looking forward to a few more signings!

Paulsimmons - Who are we going to buy? Sergio Ramos? It's clear that this season we don't have a huge amount of money to play, but what kind of 'decent' were you thinking of? At present we're a middling Championship club, and quite frankly signing Chambers ahead of others can almost be seen as a coup.

Paulsimmons what? go and do one! hes a good centre back! you were moaning when we did have any centre backs and now we got one your moaning about that! Go and support someone else then!

@paulsimmons
sorry but cannot agree re paynter. Saw him about 8 times last season (relative lives in Leeds) and he was bloody awful each time. May well have scored 30 odd goals season before last but then again Bullard a season before last was great for us.
I think Chambers if he signs will give us strength at the back and can help smith gain more experience. I hope he signs

PaulSimmons - Stop being so god damn negative. There are plenty of quality players available without emptying your wallet. It just takes time. Look @ Cresswell, young talent that wants to play football not for money. Teams like Leeds that are splashing the cash to be honest aren't doing that well. Look @ Leicester last season, bought Beckford, Nugent, Schmeichel and still finished outside the playoffs... You ought to try supporting the team other than moaning about it. Take your moaning ass comments to some other forum cos there not welcome here!!!

@Paulsimmons

But as has been mentioned several times, he was also their player of the season amd runner up in the past two years! That is just a case of sour grapes of your friend and nothing to form an opinion around.
