Town remain the frontrunners for the signature of former Nottingham Forest skipper Luke Chambers, according to the Midlands media, despite a number of sources close to Town insisting that the deal broke down yesterday evening after lengthy talks at Portman Road. The out-of-contract 26-year-old returned home to the Nottingham area last night to consider his next step with Leeds United understood to be showing strong interest in the one-time Northampton man.

Reports in Nottingham this morning claim Chambers has been offered a three-year deal at Portman Road which would almost double his £8,000-a-week Forest wage, although that figure seems unlikely given Town’s oft-stated commitment to reducing outgoings with the Championship moving towards the Financial Fair Play break-even model.

After talks, a medical and the traditional tour of the stadium and training facilities yesterday, Chambers asked for time to mull over his decision, with Leeds, whose takeover is thought to be close to being completed, believed to have made a late approach for the Kettering-born centre-half.

Town are not officially commenting on progress on the deal, as is their usual policy, but the picture may become clearer later today.

Manager Paul Jewell is due back at Portman Road this afternoon ahead of the start of pre-season training on Thursday, by which time he will be hoping Chambers, one of his top summer targets, will have committed his future to the Blues.

" have to say Keanish, I'm somewhat sceptical about £16k a week, doesn't fit with our FFP business model."

See you CAN do it - brill:)

To be honest I think a lot of footballers and their agents are still hanging out for the best deals they can get hoping for the good old days of cheap free moeny in the lower leagues. My mates an agent and a few years before the crash, he told me the most lucurative deals were in the Championship, players have to realise their wages are going to start falling in line with the rest of us who work for a living. Then again £16k is pretty dam hefty and I am not sure I want my club to be paying this for a centre half who has had a pants season.

I dont know too much about him other than what I have read on here. Although I hope we do sign him as Jewell wants him. That way if Jewell gets the men in who he wants he will have no excuses when it comes to next season whatever happens. I was feeling confident about next season until I just read this. Why cant we nail down our transfer targets ?

Why wasnt PJ here yesterday to sell the club to the lad? Or failing that if PJ is at Ipswich today why wasnt chambers here today for a medical and a walk around with his new gaffer?
The only thing Clegg is good for is running with a torch in one hand and a paintbrush in the other!
I really hope Chambers signs but i wont hold my breath thats for sure!
Pre season training starts tomorrow and so far we have brought in......A 17yr old rookie with dodgy hips that can't play until October.
At the moment we have a current squad which is worse than the one we finsished last season with!

"when we have apparently offered him TWICE as much "

APPARENTLY

based on some wild speculation

if you look at the two (?) other signings you will see the ut;ay we have to play with

I suspect one major sticking point in this case was the length of contract - the club are very relectant to offer anything beyond a year or two, which is not what players are looking for

That lack of commitment to the future should be of grave concern to us all

There is no way we should pay him 16k a week thats a joke!

@legend. Have to agree with you. Why not have discussions today when pj is back? Who was dealind with this yesterday? Mr Evans? If i was a pro footballer i wouln not be impressed with a reception. I dont see any reason why we need Mr clegg. Reckon Johnny wark or Matty Holland would sell our club alot better. True pros & ITFC legends.

Positive article...except for some of the comments.

Didn't we read somewhere that he favoured a move to the south which would give us an advantage over Warnock?

As the Club are not makeing any statements no body knows what is going on. As usual the Scum based E.A.D.T are putting about stories that deal is dead in water, why our club do not ban there reporters from the ground i do not know.

- "F1 crash driver loses right eye "
- "No evidence of mermaids, says US government"

Just a few headlines today from the news.

Lets get a bit of perspective here. Our club will go on, no ones died, we dont know what he's decided (assuming he actually is in the running and offered the job). Lets see what tomorrow brings, eh?

very strange how no one wants to come to town, there must be a good reason as to why every target we have always says the same NO THANKS.

Cornardblue - I agree with you -I have had a toot several times at the Archant group on their site about how they are always so negative about ITFC and how they cant put any positive comments at all about what goes on. For a couple of weeks my comments weren't published!!

Dave Gooderham reported on E.A.D.T website at 10.30 this morning that deal was in serious doubt as player considers his options.
O'k not dead in water but typical negative Gooderham reporting when he has no facts.
