Town Linked With Move for Leeds Keeper Lonergan
Town Linked With Move for Leeds Keeper Lonergan

Blues boss Paul Jewell is hoping to beat Bolton to the signature of Leeds United keeper Andy Lonergan, according to a national newspaper. The Town manager is ready to offer the Whites their £200,000 asking price for the 28-year-old, who was previously a Blues target in 2008 during Jim Magilton’s time as boss when at hometown club Preston.

Leeds are willing to allow the 6ft 3in tall keeper to leave now that they have completed the signing of Paddy Kenny from QPR.

Lonergan is well known to Bolton manager Owen Coyle, who has confirmed his interest: "There are a number of goalkeepers that have been in the frame, and Andy is one that has been mentioned.

"He's a goalkeeper I've known about for many years and he played against my Burnley team for Preston in a season that he was probably the outstanding keeper in the whole Championship.

"There was a lot of interest from Everton at the time, I'm led to believe, so I know all about him, but there are three or four others out there at the moment, so we'll see what the next couple of weeks bring."

Leeds boss Neil Warnock has confirmed that his club has turned down a bid for Lonergan, who has two years left on his contract at Elland Road: "We have an offer from a Championship club for Andy Lonergan, but it wasn't what we would call acceptable."

Coyle wants Lonergan to compete with Hungarian Adam Bogdan for a first team place, while a more regular spot is likely at Portman Road.

Capped by the Republic of Ireland, who he qualifies for through his grandparents, at U16 level and England at U20, Lonergan also had loan spells at Darlington, Blackpool, Wycombe Wanderers and Swindon while with Preston, joining Leeds for an initial fee of £200,000 a year ago.

Agree with your comments Bluey420. Where has it ever said we made an offer to Heaton/Loach etc. Lonergan was at his peak a few seasons back so not my choice but then heaven forbid if ALB is number one. Keep searching PJ.

Of those we have been linked to, or even been confirmed that we have had a look at, Hopf & Heaton are the 2 that I would be happiest with signing. Don't know enough about Maximillian from Bayern but he would possibly be an ok number 2 to either of the others.
With Allardyce looking to sign about 3 more strikers by the looks of it, I hope we go back in for Baldock on a permanent basis. Even Maynard looks like being well down the pecking order at West Ham now. Baldock & Davies added to a superfit Chopra & Scotland would be quite the strikeforce to terrorise the Championship.

I remember standing behind the goal at deepdale for town against preston a few years back and he seemed a right scumbag, and gave some lads to the side of us the old hand gesture, more than once. He was getting some stick, as all keepers do, but its best when they laugh it off, and end up having a laugh with the crowd.

Am I missing something here, but if this keeper is good as everyone is saying why have Leeds brought in Kenny? This keeper still has two years on his contact, so surely they could afford to have kept him another season before looking for a replacement. Mind you Kenny and Warnock are tied at the hip, probably Warnock can't live without him!

Keeper is the one position that is really starting to worry me, unless pj has something up his sleeve that we dont know about. Hopefully we will have someone soon as we need competition at least for A.L.B.. Its shocking to the think we have only one keeper.

Essential we sign a keeper and ASAP. Very important the new man gets a good few weeks developing an understanding with the back four. Surprising and disappointing that this has been sorted well before now.

Bolton must surely be in the driving seat - they will offer more money and he's known to the manager.

What about Lonnie Donnigan ,[the bloke who sang ''do's your chewing gum lose its flavour on the goalpost overnight '' we seem to be linked to everyone and their dog !.Then suddenly season starts and we are stirring around in the dregs and grabbing what comes to the surface .We should have kept Hancock and Sivell ! Wot's the betting that Wrighty will be offered a short-term contract in the next couple of weeks, when PJ and Clegg (Dynamic Double act) realise they've left it too late.....again!

Past caring who we get now as long as its not that idiot from reading again. Just sort it soon we can't go into the new season with only one keeper, it's bad enough we dont have a spare for friendlys

They're letting Billy Painter go on the cheap for a reason.

Any keeper will do.

Surely if he was to go to bolton then he will be on the bench week in week out seen as bogdan is staying? I rate him though and would welcome him anyday!

He caused a mini riot in the tunnel after one game last season. Police and stewards everywhere.

Spent most of his career in the north/north west so will probably go to Bolton although might come to ITFC if he is offered no 1 jersey as can only see him being a number 2 at Bolton.

Billy Painter I'd rather have Kevin Painter as the former just has not cracked it in this division.

most keepers at championship level are much the same as they are prone to inconsistient displays ,thats face it blues fans if any good they would be in the premiership

If we are after lonergan I personally think
He would be a solid signing.
The two factors I think in him signing would be
A. Would he want to come down south
B. how much is first team football a factor ie: would he be happy warming his backside on boltons bench..
