Peters Set for Town Exit
Peters Set for Town Exit
Wednesday, 18th Jul 2012 10:55

Town’s longest-serving player Jaime Peters looks set to leave the Blues this summer with manager Paul Jewell confirming that the club are looking to terminate the Canadian international’s contract. Peters was left out of the squad for the pre-season tour of Holland along with striker Nathan Ellington, who Jewell says still has time to resurrect his Town career.

Jewell said: “We’ve only got so many places [on the tour], we can’t take everybody. Jaime Peters, I think he knows the club are looking at possibly terminating his contract. He needs to go and play some football.”

Peters has been with the Blues since impressing in a trial in 2004, but last season made only the one appearance, in the Carling Cup defeat to Northampton.

In January, SPL side St Johnstone would have signed the 25-year-old on loan but the move abroad in a footballing sense was prevented by the three club rule, Peters having already played for the Blues and loan club AFC Bournemouth within 12 months. The Perth side may well be amongst the clubs monitoring Peters’s situation.

Despite not travelling to Holland, Jewell insists Nathan Ellington, who like Peters has a year left on his contract, can break back into the Town side: “I decided not to bring him, but it doesn’t mean it’s the end of his career by any stretch of the imagination.

“He would argue that he hasn’t had a chance since he’s been here, which I totally agree with, but you’ve got to earn that chance and Nathan hasn’t done well enough over the season to be top of the pecking order as far as the forwards are concerned.”

Always liked him, perhaps he let himself down by not playing good enough football.
As they say, move on & thanks for your part in ITFC.

Would rather keep Peters than Ellington but neither are good enough really, good luck Jaime

So much promise, a massive petition, was never a right back or a right winger - was best in Keane's early midfield and was awesome against Arsenal.

Hopefully he will get games in midfield and play for a manager who wants him, I think with a run in a side he will become confident and better.

Who's the longest serving player when he goes then? ALB? Delaney?

Its sad I remember when he signed it was such a massive coo for us as Chelsea were after him as well. Yallop and DeVos being influencial on his decision. I wish him well and its a shame he never delivered on such promise.

To think that Jamie Peters started against Coventry in central midfield for Roy Keane's new look Ipswich in the summer of 2009! He seemed a handy utility player at least, and it is sad for him how a team now doesn't even want to keep him for the duration of his contract as a backup player. Okay, his chances have been limited but he didn't take them and was even sent back by Bournemouth from his loan spell. It might not be the end of his career, but it isn't looking good for him!

Good luck Jamie! Always gave 100% but perhaps it's time for him to move on. As for Ellington, he really needs to up his game if he wants any chance of being in the squad!

Re pazelle: I think it's Tommy Smith. He's the only player I can think of after Peters who played under Jim Magilton.

Had to happen sooner or later. Think we saw some flashes of the talent we had hoped for when he first arrived way back in 2005 but he has been very in and out, not only from the first XI but the club altogether.

Maybe he'll return to Toronto to play for Paul Mariner and the resurgent TFC.
I'm sad that my days as the TWTD's special Jaime Peters correspondent are over.

Such a fans favourite... that many STILL spell his name wrong.

My first comment on here and it's about poor old Jamie Peters! i'll be sorry to see Jaime leave, I actually believe he was very under-rated. He played brilliant against Arsenal and when he looked good he looked really good, proper worker.. shame really.

such a shame, he showed so much potential but saw him play in the Northampton game and he was woeful... that said his confidence had probably been totally destroyed by then!

Always liked Jaime, and over the years I did think he would break into the first team. Unlucky For him in the end, but 25 is still a good age for a football player, he'll be fine :)

Jewell should retire. Peters is miles better than Ellington.

This guy is like the last party guest that won't leave, but thank god he's finally going to be off the books.

Was never going to hold down a first team place in any position and that's without any competition for places!! He must have been laughing all the way to the bank, scamming 8 years wages off us and providing precisely zero input on the pitch.

Good riddance!

All you Peters apologists can't escape the fact that he has utterly failed to nail down a first team place despite 8 years at the club, during a period when we haven't exactly been setting the world alight. Time to move on. If he was a better player you wouldn't need to make excuses for him.

For me Ellington has looked like a useful holdup player from the few glimpses we got last season. Not every player trains well, why did Jewell give him a contract if he's not prepared to throw him Duke into the mix? Waste of money.

SpivvySpackyChops

That's unfair. I agree he has to go, but do you have to be so nasty about it?

Disappointed as really don't feel that Jewell has given him an opportunity since taking over. Has played well for Town in the past and as many people have pointed out is not a RB. He is a winger and been played in the wrong position by Keane and then not at all by Jewell. Always thought he tried hard for Town (Northampton game aside) and wish him well wherever his career takes him from here.

That's garbage Spivvy.

Sad story really, everyone wanted it to work out for him.

Good luck Jamie.

Don't sit on the fence SpivvySpackyChops!

Perhaps we could swap Peters for Michael Bostwick of Stevenage? Wouldn't be a bad move for either of them.

just shy of 100 games in 7 years (under four managers) suggests that he wasn't quite good enough, the fact that Bournemouth sent him back from a loan spell should convince even his biggest fans that he needs to move on.
