Player Town Close to Signing Not a Striker
Player Town Close to Signing Not a Striker
Friday, 20th Jul 2012 14:01

TWTD has learnt that the player Paul Jewell is close to making his fourth signing of the summer is not a striker. While the Blues have held talks with former England international Emile Heskey, he's not the man Jewell was referring to when he said he was hoping to add to his squad in the next few days.

Speaking after last night’s 1-1 draw at Den Bosch, Jewell revealed that another signing was close to being done but wouldn’t confirm where the mystery man played: “We’re hopeful of getting certainly one in pretty quickly.”

Chief executive Simon Clegg similarly said he expected another deal soon at the press conference where new keeper Scott Loach was officially paraded yesterday afternoon: “One deal is moving from tepid to fairly warm. I’m hopeful that over the next couple of days we can make another announcement.”

We understand that that player — who could be confirmed as a Town signing early next week - isn’t Heskey or any other striker with Jewell also looking to add to central midfield in addition to his attack.

Speaking after yesterday’s game, the Town boss said: “We’re going to need a big centre forward, someone who is going to give us a bit of physicality up front, and then the same in the middle of the park.

“We’re at least two players light to just give us that bit of presence and that’s where we’re looking to strengthen.”

Talks with Heskey are understood to be at a relatively early stage.

Maybe the paperwork has finally been sorted out and it is Cheick Kourouma!

Rules out Heskey, Davies & Baldock then.

Maybe Kourouma has got through all his red tape and can now officially sign?

From the way the article reads to me though, it seems the un-named player is currently with a club so that would rule Kourouma out.

I would still like to see another centre half come in or a midfielder that can play across the midfield-Alan Judge springs to mind, that rumour appears to have all but disappeared though! Good to see the club really kicking into gear with the transfers now though, UTT

Hmm I see.

Something in my head thinks it could be Freeman from Stevenage. But I don't know why I think that.

Think its a breakthrough with the Kourouma debacle, nothing to get too excited over, albeit glad to welcome him aboard. Alan Judge would be very welcomed but the enquiries for him and Paul Gallacher of Leicester were both not taken any further after we were quoted a price of £1mil for Gallacher and £1mil+ for Judge.

In other news, I see Richard Keogh joined Derby yesterday. Shame. He would've been the perfect player to complete our backline and provide competition for Chambers et al.!

ps @Robdaful, isn't Freeman a striker, hence ruling him out along with Heskey, Davies and Baldock? Apologies if I'm wrong but I was sure he was.

Reading stuff this morning I reckon it could be Harry Kewell, would love it. We could sing a song with Jewell and Kewell in it, my life is made (if it's true).

Probably kello. Or someone equally underwhelming.

A pacey winger would suit me just nicely. Not a Danny Haynes type though. Someone with an end product!

@ChrisMakin2012

Ellington is still contracted so I'm guessing it's not him

Probably Heskey then, didn't PJ say that the keeper we were close to signinh hadn't been picked up by the media? We all knew or suspected interest in Loach a while back so it's probably just to throw people of the trail.
I think Heskey (if he comes to us) could be a good signing.

@scribble to be fair I think @chrismakin2012 can be forgiven for that one. I'm not sure Ellington knows he is signed to us.

Maguire from Sheff Utd, Halford from Portsmouth or Wordsworth from Col Utd would be very welcome.

Good money is still on Kourouma though.
