Bristol City in Davies Talks
Bristol City in Davies Talks
Tuesday, 31st Jul 2012 12:16

Bristol City are reported to be in talks with Derby County regarding Town target Steve Davies. The Blues have been chasing the 24-year-old all summer but view the Rams’ asking price, believed to be £1 million, as excessive, while the Robins are also long-time admirers of the former Tranmere frontman having previously been linked with him back in May.

Davies is set to leave Derby this summer for unspecified family reasons with a move to the south, ideally nearer London, his preferred option.

Speaking on Saturday, Blues boss Paul Jewell, who signed Davies during his time in charge at Pride Park, said Town and the Rams were far from agreeing a fee: “Steve Davies is a player I took to Derby and one I admire, but it’s all down to cost. If the deal was right for us and we could afford him, we’d take him.

“People want you to go out and buy players but it’s not a bottomless pit I’ve got, so I’ve got to be prudent in the way I try and work.

“I spoke to Derby and Nigel Clough over the summer and asked about the fee and the fee is far in excess [of what we can afford]. Don’t ask me what that is because that’s between the clubs, but I haven’t got that amount of money.”

Speaking early last week, Derby boss Nigel Clough felt Davies's exit might be getting closer: "There is still a fair bit of interest in him. The interest seemed to cool at the end of last week but there are one or two possibilities now and we will know more towards the weekend."

Blackburn Rovers, who are looking for more strikers after recent signing Leon Best was ruled out for six months with a knee injury, were also recently reported to be interested.

Bristol City have also had a £1.5 million bid for Sam Baldock, another player the Blues have shown interest in this sumer, accepted by West Ham, according to reports.

Meanwhile, former Blue Connor Wickham has been linked with a loan move from Sunderland to Wolves as part of a deal which would take striker Steven Fletcher to the Stadium of Light on a permanent basis.

Town have been linked with a loan move for the 19-year-old on a number of occasions since the end of last season with Jewell confirming that Town have “first say” if the Black Cats make him available on a short-term basis.

With his injury record, £1 million is no-go for davies, jewell is so right to be prudent, and clough has to realise sometime that his valuation is unrealistic, unless of course someone other than town stumps up the cash(but both bristol and blackburn are a long way from london).

Think its about time Ipswich stopped fudging about and pulled their finger out over these friggin transfers . Is £1 really that much in todays day and age ? We have a very wealthy owner and cash from Connors sale last year and we still never seem to be willing to part with any dosh . The promise of a return to the premiership from the owner and board is starting to look ever more unlikely if we dont start strenghening the squad . Not long to the start of the season now , i thought the plan was to have deals done nice and early so any new players would have time to settle in . Now ive never been one of the miserable brigade on here but even us most loyal supportive fans will start to get fed up if the club doesnt get its arse in gear ... That said the thought of turning into a Daleyitfc poster is enough to keep me positive .... COYB !!!!

jas0999, remember, you're not allowed to show any ambition on here and want to see the club do well. You're meant to just sit back, take everything that happens in your stride and not moan!
Well......to hell with that, I really would like Simon Clegg and Marcus Evans to outline what exactly they expect of the team and future ambitions, spending hardly any money isn't exactly ambitious now is it?
For all those praising Jewell for sticking to his guns and that we should be waiting for the players coming through from the youth, well it could all be too late by then, we may have to wait 3-5 years for the next crop of youngsters coming through and if we haven't got a big/good enough squad because we are lacking in spending we could be dangerously close to relegation.
I don't know what to make of the season ahead, unlike most I don't think that Chambers and Loach are enough but some seem happy with that.

So, are Bristol City the new Leeds and Palace? Trying to get in whatever player we are interested in getting in. But where has all this money came from, from City?

Bristol City have a very wealthy owner in Steve Lansdown, and a decent manager in McInnes who only joined them part way thru last season. I expect them to be one of the surprise packages of the new season. Don't see them struggling at the wrong end of the table again.

Jewell is clearly very reluctant to pay more than 500k for Davies which is fine, but IMO he has to get someone because our strikeforce is probably one of the most lightweight in the league at the moment, we have to look at league 1 and 2 and be clever, lower league players have really impacted on the Championship, Lambert, Austin, Holt and Morison (i whisper quietly), Tyrone Barnett looks good, Nugent before Preston was at Bury, Joe Mason plymouth to Cardiif has done well, I know they're not easy to find but with our current transfer policy its the best way to go,its situations like this that will test PJ's managerial credentials.

Jewell is getting stick on here but he is only allowed to spend what Evans lets him.

The 'plan' at the moment seems to be to spend the bare minimum to keep us in the Championship and nothing more. I know I will get the FFP rules thrown at me but when even Bristol City can come up with £1 million+ then we have problems!

For good?

It's a catch 22 situation. Sign him and he could bang in 20 goals +, on the other side of the coin he could be injured and out for weeks and almost be a flop signing like Priskin for example. Personally I would take the gamble but there appears to be a lack of trust with Evans money. I think we are playing it too dangeriously. We have been down the bottom of the table for periods of the last two seasons if the club get this wrong and we start badly I think we could be in trouble. Mid-table is not ACCEPTABLE next season nothing less than a top 10 finish for me or PJ can take his coat and leave.

Certainly a bit worrying that seem unable to compete with most in Championship now, this wasn't what Mr Sheepshanks or many of the shareholders were led to believe when ME took over;and I am struggling to think of any benefits that have accrued from that takeover. With less than half of money received for CW spent on transfer fees owner appears to be trying to claw previous overspend back.
Still Olympics will soon be over then perhaps ME and SC will be able to devote more time to ITFC!

perhaps M.E. isn't splashing the cash as P.J. hasn't got long on his contract and wants to see what he can do with what we have, shame really.......

Short memories - City sold Maynard for about 6 million. Unlike our chairman, it seems there's is willing to invest transfer money back into transfer targets rather than let big money signings walk away on free's and then scrimp on putting the hand back in to the transfer kitty...

We have a multi millionaire owner who may as well not be here. Although I agree we do not want to get into the state portsmouth have but surely we must have some funds for players. We only saw perhaps 2 million from the wickham sale. Where did that go?? Why would anyone want to sign for us though. We claim to be ambitious but we've got chambers on a free and Hewitt and Loach for 250k a piece. That's ambitious ........ Not !!!

Last time I looked Ipswich was closer than Bristol!!

Look, the guys hardly played in 4 years due to injury, if Bristol city want to spunk £1m on him thats there perogative!!

Personally its too much of a risk given his track record, I'd never eard of him before town were interested. We have 1 month left to sign players and hopefully pj will have other options which no doubt he will have.

To hear fans already putting pj under pressure is just crazy, lets just wait and see.
