Coppinger Linked Again
Coppinger Linked Again
Thursday, 2nd Aug 2012 12:56

Town are reported to be considering renewing their interest in Doncaster Rovers midfielder James Coppinger. Having made an approach for the 31-year-old last summer, Blues boss Paul Jewell said he could make an enquiry regarding the former Exeter man at the end of the season but subsequently decided against reviving his interest.

Rovers turned down an offer of £300,000 for the right-sided midfielder last summer when the Blues also made an approach for striker Billy Sharp, who joined Southampton in January.

Prior to Town’s final game of the season at the Keepmoat Stadium, Jewell said he planned to talk to Doncaster boss Dean Saunders regarding Coppinger - "I’ll speak with Deano on Saturday to see what the situation with the lad is” — but afterwards ruled out making a move: “I don’t think so. We’d like good players, he’s a good player, Coppinger, but I don’t think so.”

Yesterday, rumours on Twitter claimed the Blues and Burnley had had offers turned down for Coppinger, while Nottingham Forest, managed by former Doncaster boss Sean O'Driscoll, have also been linked recently.

This would be great, good player and very popular at Rovers. Seemed keen to come to Ipswich. People do keep saying they want a midfielder...

why? if it defending set pieces, how will a 5"9 midfielder help out with that? believe in PJ, and i hope this is just a random rumour. we need tommy smith back, learning by the minute, young, and committed! COYB<3

I would like to see a pacey winger who stays out wide, beats his man and crosses the ball in - suppose a traditional winger - also one who doesn't think that he is a central midfielder.

I am also getting worried regarding the defence as we do need another central midfielder.

Would be a decent signing but surely Jewell would have made a move by now, same thing with Davies he seems to wait about two months before deciding wether to make a move. I'm not sure where Coppinger would fit in, Emmanuel-Thomas plays on the right, unless he changes position and goes to the left, or Coppinger goes up front, not sure. We haven't been linked with anyone for a couple of weeks so whether this rumour is just to keep people interested i'm not really sure so we'll see what happens on this one.

Some decent crossing ability would be nice which I believe Coppinger has. But Murphy has that as well with the ability to beat full backs, combined with a physical presence and some height, both of which we are dangerously lacking.

Plus Murphy will move up front as well when needed and will always chip in with at least a few goals. I really think its worth pursuing him. He's keen to come back, and I believe his kids were settled in schools. We know Jewell likes him. I'd be very disappointed if we didn't at least try and thrash out a deal.

hardly a solution to the lack of physical presence is it Paul?

You probably heard right, but Murphy will cover two positions. It's not ideal, but if Murphy was brought in, we wouldn't be so desperate for a target man because we'd already have one playing at left midfield. I mean, it doesn't look like Davies is joining anytime soon does it?

If Clegg and Evans are looking to cut costs, Murphy is probably a good option because you'd save wages and fees on an additional striker.

It worked last year with Murphy on the left, joining Chopra up top later in the game, it can work again.

Yeah good point on the wages bit, he's physically strong and versatile like you've said so would be worth a punt.

Would certainly bring experience to what is quite a young midfield (Bullard being the exception). Good set piece taker from all accounts but would personally prefer a younger option to Coppinger, with money being tight though I am guessing a move for Coppinger might fall in with our limited budget so I reckon there might be something in this!

We can't afford Murph so don't get your hopes up on that.
Coppinger may well be a decent footballer but he has the exact same weaknesses as we already have, pointless waste of money if it happens.
I would sooner take a chance on the likes of Dany N'Guessan, he's good going forward, and is a very physical committed player. At 24yrs old chances are we wouldn't make a loss on him either. Can try and get in Henderson at Millwall whilst we are at it, proper championship striker. Both not exactly in favor at Millwall either.

without a big forward in the box there is no point in having someone to stay out wide to deliver crosses as it would be bread and butter to central defenders.

Not sure why some people are saying no to this player. We need quite a bit of experience now, so we can balance the team up a little. We have most of our youth now, what about some experience. I would welcome him here.

TractorBoy666 :
I'm saying no for the same reason as you say yes. Balance, we have enough players who have no physical presence already. Thats why we get stuffed at set plays so often.

Any ideas as to who we were watching at the Peterbro/Norwich match last weekend?...is Boyd still at Posh?

bedsitfc added 15:44 - Aug 2
we invite pressure onto to ourselfs because we dont have anybody to head the ball goal bound from a cross so we always end up coming inside and losing it or having to play backward passes untill an opening arises.
i would welcome coppinger if we had someone to score from his crosses.
