Jewell: Learning About Players More Important Than Results
Jewell: Learning About Players More Important Than Results
Saturday, 4th Aug 2012 09:52

Blues boss Paul Jewell believes finding out about players is more important than results during pre-season. Town face West Ham at Portman Road in their only home friendly this afternoon (KO 3pm).

Jewell, whose team has lost 2-0 to Luton and 2-1 to Southend in their last two matches, said: “Pre-season games you can get carried away.

“I spoke to one manager [the other day] and he said we need to get beaten in pre-season because they’d scored something like 17 goals and haven’t conceded one yet. Nobody likes losing but it’s more important to find out about players.

“We’ve got a few young players in the squad. At Southend we had Cressy, Josh, Emmanuel-Thomas, Massimo, Luke Hyam, there are a lot of young players in there.”

He concedes his side need to improve and that the squad needs further additions: “We need to get better, we need to get more quality players, stronger and have a nasty streak.

“At Southend we had 21 crosses go in, but have we got enough people in the team who really want to score a goal? And have we got enough people in the team who when it comes into our box are prepared to stick their head in?

“We are a small team and it’s something we need to address. I know Barcelona are small, but we’re no Barcelona.”

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Marian Kello, who was recently on trial with the Blues, is now spending a similar spell with Wolves. The ex-Hearts man has also had offers of contracts from clubs in Turkey.

I'd still rather see us beating sides that are supposedly well below us in all factors, remember its their pre-season too! Is it me or does he sound worried, I guess I would be if my job depended on other people doing theirs to the very best of their ability. Let's be honest if he does fail here, it's back to TV punditry as nobody will want him, not at this level.

There is truth that wins in pre-seasons games can make clubs complacent, so it can be better that weaknesses are exposed early on so they can be sorted out before the season starts.

I think our most pressing need is a tall striker who can win balls in the air and who can come back to help out the defence when we are defending set pieces.

I thought when you sign players you try to get to know them then. Must be taking lessons of keane for social skills.

he won't finish the season hopefully, tactically inept, poor quality signings etc. in all seriousness he hasn't really added to the squad that much so should know all about the team that he built. Not good enough last season, won't be good enough this season. - gone by end of September hopefully so we can rebuild and forget the last 2 managers.

Jewell was saying exactely the same things a year ago, 'nasty streak, knocking over your granny to score' etc etc and Keane before that!! Can the manager of our club actually do something about it and stop talking about it?

Tractorgirls... You made a comment on another post about loving the fact , people on here having an opinion on linked players being a good addition yet never having seen them play. I love the fact you have an opinion on how well the team is going to do this season when none of us know who the other additions are going to be or what the team will be once the season is underway. Think b4 you post might prevent you from sounding like a fool... Take your own advice, because your negative posts are as annoying as the over the top positive ones...COYB

I am happy to sound like a fool - I am a realist.

the team is largely not that much different from last season, at the moment given the lack of signings I might say we are less of a team than we were.

lets see once the real action starts!

i think you learn more from losing but its about getting into winning ways at the start of the season.

This headline basically mean PJ knows were gonna lose this afternoon...
I do appretiate what he is trying to say, but lets be hounest, you should still expect to get some kind of result from games against Luton/Southend

Exactly wait till the action starts, I can remember preseasons that offered so much, but delivered so little ...preseason form means nothing. We are short of a couple of players to challenge, but surely anybody with Any knowledge knows that a couple of additions could make all the difference and untill we get those how do you know? How this season will pan out.to write the season off b4 a ball is kicked is rather silly. You only have to watch the Olympics to see the value of positive energy. Lots of people read the negative spin on here and go to games expecting a loss or don't bother going because they get taken in by the negative . Try getting behind the team and if it don't work we can all have a good moan, I Can moan with the best of them...coyb

So can someone please tell me why lower league teams also in pre season are able to beat us? Are they more settled? I'm sorry I just don't get it. If we played a foreign team that is mid season I'd understand however we havnt! Not being negative, well trying not to be, I just don't have that warm feeling I thought I would about this season!

Ipswich on the whole have always done better against better teams. And this afternoon against west ham, the result will be meaningless, I will be there. Looking forward to seeing some of the new signings....coyb
