Sonko on Trial at Barnsley
Sonko on Trial at Barnsley
Saturday, 4th Aug 2012 22:09

Former Blue Ibrahima Sonko is on trial with Barnsley. The Senegalese international was released by Town at the end of last season, although he spent time back at Playford Road at the start of pre-season.

Tykes manager Keith Hill said: “We are having a look at him and he is having a look at us. I want him to play 90 minutes at Crewe on Tuesday and if we are happy with him then we will discuss a contract.

“He is synonymous with the Premier League and the Championship and that is the type of player I have been looking for. He has a lot of credibility and ability but finds himself without a club.

"I would like to sign a player in his position and he is the priority at the moment. We are not looking at any other defenders until we have made a decision on Ibrahima Sonko.”

It's fair enough to say that he may not be good enough to be in our starting 11. He did make mistakes but he also kept us in games. Plus he was a nice guy and was good to have around the team.
I don't know why we couldn't have kept him on as a back up, but I wish him the best of luck for the future and if that ends up being at Barnsley, then good for him.

I wonder if the Barnsley fans remember Sonko's performance in the 5-3 match. If so, they may not be enthusiastic...

I have seriously never seen a worse defender with a football, than senderos and Sonko. He is for me who likes modern football absolutely awful, typical old school defender who hoofs the ball and heads it. Alright hes strong but nowhere near good enough. I take it as a joke when I see people wanting him back, sorry.
I loved him as a person, wonderful bloke but not a championship (or Ipswich) player.

Good luck !

I was thinking the same, he had in particular one awful pass that match, without any pressure what so ever. It was disgraceful, but I wish him all the best in the future! :)

Wow Sindre that's basically a "no offence, but..." kinda comment. There are much worse defenders than sonko. He made some calamitous errors but he only played a handful of games. He, my boy, is a gentleman. You, in this circumstance, are not.

Good luck to you Sonks! Wore his heart on his sleeve.

Just not quite good enough for us I think, although I wouldn't have been against him signing up again as a backup. He'll get regular football at Barnsley though.

I expect them to sign him up.

Why in hell would you lot want him as backup? He is simply poor, just like sindre said. More wages will also have to be spent on him, if we had him as backup too. Really isn't worth the trouble even though he was good around the place.

Its a brutal game, if we judge footballers on personality we wouldnt win anything. As I said I liked him but not good enough, simple as. What do you want me to say?

While I agree Sonko didn't turn out to be good enough for our first team, comments about him being the worst defender ever are harsh! Remember that we had just conceded 12 goals in 2 games against Southampton and Peterborough; Sonko came in and we conceded just 3 goals in the next 5 games. I remember him playing well at that time and I thank him for that. Best of luck for the future, Ibrahima.

Best of luck to your, Ibrahima. A warrior and gentleman pity the defending was not up to the same level.
