Town Again Linked With Cardiff's Blake
Tuesday, 14th Aug 2012 11:58

Town and Blackpool are reported to be targeting Cardiff’s Welsh international defender Darcy Blake.

The Blues were previously mentioned in connection with the 23-year-old in January and November when manager Paul Jewell dismissed having any interest in the New Tredegar-born centre-half.

Speaking in November, Jewell said: “I always thought he was a full-back [rather than a centre-half].

"He’s not one we’ve mentioned. I’m not saying he’s not a good player but he’s not one I’ve asked about.”

Blake, who can also operate in midfield, would appear to be out of Malky Mackay’s plans at Cardiff. The 6ft tall former Plymouth loanee, who was recently linked with Crystal Palace, has a year remaining on his contract having reportedly turned down new terms earlier this month.

Would be a good signing as cover/competition at CB

Don't see this happening with Edwards and Hewitt at RB, especially if Jewell considers him a RB, not a CB.

Always reminded me a little of Alex Bruce in his approach, which is worrying.......

From what I've read about Blake, "he has pace, good anticipation, is determined in the tackle, good in the air and is comfortable on the ball." A fair few traits we could use in our back line.

It's always seemed a bit weird to me that both Dave Jones and Malky Mackay haven't regularly partnered him with Hudson at Cardiff (they have used Gerrard and Turner instead), when both Speed and Coleman have preferred him to partner Williams for Wales instead of an established Premiership defender like James Collins. Many of his Wales team mates, like Bellamy and Ramsey reckon that Blake could even play in the Premiership.

According to www.walesonline.co.uk/footballnation/cardiff-city/cardiff-city-fc/2012/08/10/where-now-for-darcy-blake-91466-31589622/ Blake is out of MacKay's plans but has turned down a new contract. It sounds like the 23-year-old wants first team football to help his international career, so I doubt he would come here unless he was a pretty clear first choice.

Looks like he would be a good backup utility player to add some depth to the squad. However, he has only ever played for Cardiff and has been a Cardiff supporter from a young age so I'm not sure if he'd want to leave the bluebirds/red dragons for us.

Would be happy with this signing.

Would be good to have him and Hewitt competing for RB allowing Edwards to play winger as we are short of cover in that area

Read the comments the Cardiff fans really rate him, so did Gary Speed, also would be very happy with this signing.

If he can't agree terms with Cardiff, will he be able to do so with us?

I'd definitely take him he kills two birds with one stone, right sided full back cover for Edwards (when Hewitt isn't fit) and right central cover for Chambers too.

There are far better CB's about and we don't need yet another RB.

CB, physical striker and a left winger is what we need

We need cover at rb, edwards has no positional sense whatsoever and hewitt may be one for the future but as yet has only just started running again after his injury!!

Billybluenuts: What about Jack Ainsley? Why give him a 18month contract if you have no belief in the guy to do a job?

Can cover Full back and CB. Also competent cover for midfield too.
Good squad player PJ is looking for.

PJ has said several times that first XI is good but depth in squad is light. Blake would provide excellent cover and young enough to provide good value for the next few seasons.
