Ellington and Trialist in U21s Squad at Swansea
Monday, 20th Aug 2012 10:48

Striker Nathan Ellington and Cameroonian trialist Yann Songo’o are in the Town squad facing Swansea City in the club’s inaugural match in the U21s Professional Development League Two — South. The Blues travelled to Wales yesterday and stayed overnight ahead of this morning’s game at the Swans’ training ground at Stebonheath (KO 11am).

Clubs are entitled to name three overage players in U21 sides but Ellington is the only one named in the squad which made the trip.

Songo’o, 20, was most recently with French club Pobla de Mafumet, having previously played for Sabadell and Real Zaragoza’s B and youth sides, during which time he was linked with Real Madrid and Barcelona. As a youngster he was also with another Spanish club, Deportivo La Coruña, and Metz in France.

Born in the Cameroonian capital Yaoundé, the 6ft 1in tall central defender has won three U20 caps for the country of his birth and has also played for the French U16s.

His father is ex-Cameroon international keeper Jacques Songo'o and his brother Franck plays in the MLS with the Portland Timbers.

Most of the rest of the side are academy youngsters who also played in Saturday’s 4-1 U18s victory over the Swans, including schoolboy keeper Jacob Marsden.

U21s: Ellington, Songo’o, Whight, Burke, October, Thorsteinsson, Lawrence, Hammond, Marriott, Timlin, Berkane, Willbye, Galvin, Marsden, Winter, Acott.

How does Ellington get to play in an U21 match? He is way above 21.

Hopefully this will give Ellington some much needed playing time and get his town career back on track.

Must be a bit humiliating for him beeing the oldest player in the team by at least ten years

Why can we play a trialist, but not a player we're in the process of signing who has been training with us all summer (korouma)?

Korouma is injured. That's why.

Pobla de Mafumet, Sabadell, Real Zaragoza B, Deportivo La Coruña, Metz...How do we find these youngsters with a background of so many clubs? How does a 20-year-old get moved around that much?!

As for Ellington, it's an opportunity to score goals and show he is worth a place in the first team squad.

Initially mis-read the phrase "three overage players" as "three average players", and therefore thought that Ellington was under-qualified ....

I think we should organise a friendly against Helmond Sport

So how do we pronounce Songo'o? "Song-o-o"? "Song-oo"?

Fatboy added 13:09 - Aug 20
They needed someone over 21 to drive the coach.

surely the point with an u21s team is to develope young pros who are between youth and first team.looking at this squad we have 2, whight and burke with lawrence who is 16. Where are the young players to come through, and how does this help the first year scholars who played on sat.
Dont see how this will help the younger players who are not involved with the first team.
maybe they are to be sent out on loan ?
