Jewell: We Can Turn Things Around
Thursday, 20th Sep 2012 01:54

Blues boss Paul Jewell has insisted that his Town side are capable of turning their season around despite a disappointing start which sees them sitting in 23rd in the Championship after six games. The Blues have failed to score in their last two matches — both 2-0 defeats — despite creating plenty of opportunities in front of goal.

Jewell said: “I think we can turn it around. We’ve just got to take the chances. You guys [the media] have sat up here with numerous managers and they’ll have said the same thing - ‘goals change games’ - and if we get the first goal then you’ll see a different side to us.

“It’s not as if we’re not creating chances, we’re creating really good opportunities but we’ve got to be more ruthless in each box.”

The Blues boss is likely to be without recent signing Paul Taylor when Charlton visit Portman Road on Saturday, the former Peterborough man having left Portman Road on crutches after last night’s match due to an ankle injury sustained in the second half, while fellow frontman Michael Chopra could also be a doubt.

The 28-year-old tweeted: “Let's hope my thigh is better for the weekend, lots of rest and ice. Gutted about tonight, we need to start taking our chances.”

Wolves boss StÃ¥le Solbakken was pleased to notch his first away win as the manager of the Midlanders but admitted it was a close game: “It was hard work. It could have gone either way.

"I think in the first half both teams were very well organised and there were few chances and it was difficult for either team to open the other one up.

“In the second half there were a lot of chances for both teams. I think we struggled with the long ball into our penalty area, we defended too deep and even if we won the first ball, the second one could always cause us problems.

“But we also had some great chances; Kevin Doyle hit the inside of the post and Bjorn Sigurdarson should have scored at 0-0, so it could have gone either way.”

The Norwegian had sympathy with Tommy Smith for his own goal: “He was unlucky there. I didn’t really see what happened, but we haven’t had much luck so far this season, so maybe it was our turn today.”

Solbakken says his first six games as a manager in English football have shown him just how close the Championship is: “What I’ve seen so far is that there isn’t a great difference between the teams.

“I think that Ipswich are in a difficult situation when you look at the statistics so far, but they could have had points today and I saw their game with Middlesbrough and they were very unlucky and they drew at home with Blackburn, so I think that shows how even this league is.”

Not looking good,
Should have brought in a proper center forward... Not Murphy as he isn't the answer

Either Jewell is unable to get his intended targets and The Mystery Mogul Evans doesn't approve and won't sanction it...
or
He is seriously flawed in constructing a team that will achieve something better than what it's doing under his control.

It wouldn't surprise me at all to see Mick McCarthy installed before too long,
possibly in October.

Large Banner from the top of the north stand at half time saying,

'Time gentleman please. Our club is in plight. Lets be having you'.

Who's making it?

Let's face a few facts.....lowest amount of goals scored in the division, AND a complete inability to defend is a recipe for disaster. Yes, we need more goals but tonight we played a team that had not won away in 9 games and still managed to lose!! To be honest they could of scored more goals too.
I feel a bit sorry for PJ as it is so clear that unless we offer more attractive fees and wages we will never attract the talent we need. Sam Baldock scored a brace on Tuesday and we have missed out on so many decent players.
Does anyone know what our strategy is? Buy young players? Experienced former Premiership players ? or players that have been left in the wilderness?? At the moment we are a rudderless ship that is drifting!

All is not lost fellow Ipswich fans, but it`s starting to get really bad. Allthough most of the managers of the club we`ve come up against say we play a decent game, it`s just not good enough. Jewell continuosly say we need to take our chances, and to tighten up at the back. What are they doing at the training-ground? These are pofessional coaches and players. Start playing with passion and for the badge, or get out. Ipswich is not a club that deserves to be batteling relegation to the third tire every year. Do the club need a new owner and a new board? Marcus Evans told us that there would be funds avaleble to put together a decent side, and no quality signings have come trough the doors at Portman Road for years now. Apart from a few, including Scott Loach, Michael Chopra and JET. Start behaving like you want to get back to the Premier League, and get some good players inn. If not, let the few youngsters we have left have a go. Sort it out sooner rather than later, or let someone else have a go. Why sack Magilton I`m wondering. These last to numbsculls have nowere near the results that he had. At least Magilton came close to the playoffs. I`m so frustrated and tired of following my loving Ipswich these days. Someone please step up to the plate and help me and the others to get our confidence back.

It was obvious last season that Jewel and his coaching staff just did not have a clue, the Barnsley game sadly saved him.
Evans, for the sake of ITFC get rid and bring back some hope for us long suffering supporters!

This will be the last season that i part with my very hard earned money to pump into ITFC for season/match tickets etc.
Im a family man and in these tough times im not wasting good money anymore until there are big changes at Portman road.
I can remember the Robson and burley days....... Passion, guts, desire, entertainment, quality, atmosphere, a club that cared about its fans and a chairman that always addressed us fans and the media to inform us about the current plans and development for the club.
Now we have a club that has a faceless leader who does not seem to care, a total clueless CEO and a manager that has been no better at all than the previous one.
we have fans who argue and bicker with each other every chance they get, a atmosphere at home games that would be better suited at a wake and players who don't seem to feel any pride when pulling on the famous blue and white shirt.
I really feel sorry for you young fans out there, because i doubt you will ever see what us fans 40 and over have seen!
This club is losing its backbone of fans, Die hard fans, loyal fans, one's who remember the good times and have stuck through the bad times.
At the current moment there is only one way this club is heading!
Unless the owner of this club wakes up and return this club to how it used to be then it will loose fans by the thousands!
I hate to say this and as much as i hate them with a true passion, Our Enemy up the A140 are currently laughing in our faces and i'm not having that!!!!
Naaarwich is run properly, they have a owner who loves the club, its fans and everything to do with the club. It shows by the ammount of support they have and the league they are in. I have so much hatred for them but they are miles ahead of us at the moment in the way a club should be ran.
If things dont change this season im off!!
Rant over!

ME has got business acumen outside of football not so sure he has in football, he sacked magilton and brought in Keane sacked Keane and brought in Jewell he also got Clegg on board, he has spent million on players and wages, and yet he allows these employees to let players leave for free who cost the club a fortune.

If he was to sack Jewell what clown would he bring in next.
With Magilton in charge we at least flirted with the play offs.

Since Me came we seem to put the prices up watch the gates go down and slide further down the table and sell some of our best talents, the only thing I can say I thing he has done well is stop us doing a Portsmouth

Keanish I'd go for 'Lord Lorcan is our Owner, CEO is Captain Mainwering and Baldrick our Manager - RIP ITFC'

You're never too good to go down...(sorry)

We need to win (convincingly) on Saturday...where's the passion gone? We need a leader on the pitch...oh, Jimmy Jimmy it should have been you. We still need competition at the back. Tommy Smith...we still believe in you...

The longer this goes on, the more people will scream for Harry...

So we need someone to start taking all the gilt-edged chances we are creating? Why didn't we spend £2million on a striker to do just that.......oh wait

people say Evans has not given Jewell money what has he done signed a dwarf when we needed strength in the team 3 midfielders loans 1 Murphy simply awful the other 2 best town players says a lot about the rest.
Thomas as I have said since he signed is one of the worst players ever he came on and gave the ball away all the time.
Get a decent manager in and get rid of the dross.
Look at the size of Wolves defenders what does Jewell do play 2 dwarfs the mans brain dead get rid now JEWELL OUT

Can you really turn in around Paul? Really? What like last season, who's going to provide the goals after half time this year when we're up at Oakwell getting stuffed again?
I don't think we can and I think Jewell should be shown the door now, allowing the new manager to come and and maybe bring in one or two loan defenders (I don't like loans but that's all we can get at the moment and we badly need them) and maybe a striker. Probably easier said than done but something has to happen before we fall away and become too far adrift.

The main problem I have is that I don't have the faith in Evans and Clegg to appoint the right person, they'll probably just go and get someone who'e out oif work because it's cheaper.

Why do we have to listen to Jewells hype and dreams , he might be a nice family man but I want him out of work. The team is in no way better than the one he inherited we are going backwards fast, of course at this stage it does not mean the Town will be relegated but in six games time we could well be past the point of no return. I make no secret Jewell was the wrong man from the start for Ipswich Town, Keane was very poor Jewell is a complete disaster.

We hear the same excuses time after time..

Charlton is a MUST NOT LOSE for Mr Jewell.. Or I firmly believe we'll all be discussing the possibly of a new manager come Sunday morning.

Failure to address our defensive problems last season, failure to land targets in the summer and failure to even bring in a loanee as an emergency is crazy!! He's on thin thin ice..

Well said Kesgraveblue57 Jewell is a lot worse as he gives people hope and then dashes all hope at least with Keane you knew we were bad so had no false hope with this idiot you just get false hopes all the time JEWELL OUT

In all honesty, as a fan, I am bemused- I just cant seem to accept PJ's long term plan is working, and all i can simply say is, I am quite tired of the same reasons, excuses, promises, guarentees and calls for patience coming from PJ. This is one of the worst starts to 2nd tier season I can remember, and I hope for PJ's sake the end is a very different story

Worrying times at PR. A strike force that fails to score, a defence that fails to defend, a keeper that IMO is no better than what we have had and a midfield made up of loanees.
I don't blame ME for wanting to keep in the background but those who used to slate David Sheepshanks have got what they wanted.
Feel sorry for PJ in that he has not had the money to spend that Keane and Magic had but can PJ be trusted to spend it wisely?
Wolves were poor last night and been on a long away run without winning, but for all the chances Town created - again nobody to score. I think Taylor looks useful and will score goals and Scotland is decent player to. Chopra although physically fitter than last season is not scoring.
Looks like another season of mediocraty mid table and on current form flirting with the relegation zone again. Don't feel PJ is right man and would not be unhappy to see a replacement but not McCarthy.
