Jewell: We Can Turn Things Around
Thursday, 20th Sep 2012 01:54

Blues boss Paul Jewell has insisted that his Town side are capable of turning their season around despite a disappointing start which sees them sitting in 23rd in the Championship after six games. The Blues have failed to score in their last two matches — both 2-0 defeats — despite creating plenty of opportunities in front of goal.

Jewell said: “I think we can turn it around. We’ve just got to take the chances. You guys [the media] have sat up here with numerous managers and they’ll have said the same thing - ‘goals change games’ - and if we get the first goal then you’ll see a different side to us.

“It’s not as if we’re not creating chances, we’re creating really good opportunities but we’ve got to be more ruthless in each box.”

The Blues boss is likely to be without recent signing Paul Taylor when Charlton visit Portman Road on Saturday, the former Peterborough man having left Portman Road on crutches after last night’s match due to an ankle injury sustained in the second half, while fellow frontman Michael Chopra could also be a doubt.

The 28-year-old tweeted: “Let's hope my thigh is better for the weekend, lots of rest and ice. Gutted about tonight, we need to start taking our chances.”

Wolves boss StÃ¥le Solbakken was pleased to notch his first away win as the manager of the Midlanders but admitted it was a close game: “It was hard work. It could have gone either way.

"I think in the first half both teams were very well organised and there were few chances and it was difficult for either team to open the other one up.

“In the second half there were a lot of chances for both teams. I think we struggled with the long ball into our penalty area, we defended too deep and even if we won the first ball, the second one could always cause us problems.

“But we also had some great chances; Kevin Doyle hit the inside of the post and Bjorn Sigurdarson should have scored at 0-0, so it could have gone either way.”

The Norwegian had sympathy with Tommy Smith for his own goal: “He was unlucky there. I didn’t really see what happened, but we haven’t had much luck so far this season, so maybe it was our turn today.”

Solbakken says his first six games as a manager in English football have shown him just how close the Championship is: “What I’ve seen so far is that there isn’t a great difference between the teams.

“I think that Ipswich are in a difficult situation when you look at the statistics so far, but they could have had points today and I saw their game with Middlesbrough and they were very unlucky and they drew at home with Blackburn, so I think that shows how even this league is.”

I'm finding it difficult to give PJ more time now... I think it is inevitable unless we win the next three games which is unlikely with the way we defend. 33 years supporting and can't remember feeling this dejected about my beloved Ipswich Town. Please play with some pride on Saturday, the very least we demand.

Why kick Jewellio out now while we can watch him psychologically fall apart into a pool of tears?

Jewel keeps relying on the fact that we seem to play well even though we lose. The fact is we keep losing games. That simply means we are not as good as we think are and not as good as other teams in this division. We don't have a team that can compete at the top the Championship and we are a mid level Championship team at best. We have an average set of players that try hard. The club has a great set up, but the worry is the management and owners don't seem to able to attract the quality of player we need to get us out of this division. We live in hope that one year we get a squad that clicks and we have a lucky season. Unfortunately, as we start to loose touch with teams at the top, it looks like another average season for ITFC!

There speaks the manager, in desperate tones, who fears the sack...

Jewell —  I'm tired of your meaningless witty banter and clueless ramblings.

Can we please, for the first time in a long time, actually be given a manager who knows what the hell he's doing?

Who is he trying to convince? Us or himself?

Jewell and Clegg have got to go and sooner for the sake of the club. Forget being too good to get be relegated, nobody's guranteed safety in this league.

Jewell says we've got the players to do well and he's right. Its Jewell's lack of ideas and managerial style (if you can call it style) that's the problem.

Things need freshening up. I can't remember the last time we looked positive and hungry at home?

The best football we've seen under Jewell was at the latter part of last season with the team that was arrived at by default, i.e. as a result of injuries or suspensions. We saw Drury, Hyam and Smith come into the team and perform, and Martin settle into his most effective position, all of which I suspect would not have happened if Jewell was able to select what he considered to be his strongest side. Prior to that what we were watching was devoid of entertainment, and now that PJ is introducing his 'own men' again we're back to square one - he hasn't learnt a thing.
This is the turning point for me, I have backed Jewell until now. Any chance of a promotion push will never come with him at the helm.

Agree with all regarding Jewell's inability to get the required results but is it all down to him?? Evans & Clegg either need to back or sack. Simple.

Its glaringly obvious that he has idenitified targets only for the board not to pay the salaries required at Championship level to get a quality commanding centre back and a proper right back and two decent permanent midfielders.

A break even model is no good if ITFC are playing League One football next season - but agree we shouldn't sign mercenaries (we have already done that!)

So will changing the manager really improve anything if the next man is faced with exactly the same problems? For all the failing of the previous manager (and there were many) he did make at least one valid point in his tenure ' I had the players in my office, the club didn't get the deals done'

Taylor apart, Jewell has had no money to work with, its all been freebies & loans - not the way forward to develop a build a side.

Last night was very very disappointing (just stating the bleeding obvious).Apart from the last 10 minutes of the first half the team (and game) was passionless. Wolves were poor - albeit very tall - and were there for the taking.
However I don't blame our defeat on the defensive performance. Our achilles heel, defending set pieces ,wasn't apparent last night - I thought they looked pretty secure. How many saves did Loach have to make.
But we missed at least six really good chances - Martin ,who runs his socks off missed at least 3. Chopra didn't miss any as he didn't get any and although in the first half there were a few signs of him and Taylor linking effectively he is off the boil and in my opinion should be on the bench with Scotland starting.
On the plus side I was very impressed with N'daw - after a slow start he got better and better and is an intimidating presence in midfield, something we haven't had for a long time. Luongo was also excellent - people moan about them being loans but they are here for the season and as far as I am concerned appear fully committed to Ipswich. Plus who knows, we might be able to buy them at the end of their loan periods.
Murphy doesn't convince me and had a very poor game - also he isn't an encouragement to keep the ball on the deck and pass our way out from the back. Loach after the first 10 minutes just seemed to belt the ball in his direction where because of the size of the opposition he (Murphy) was pretty ineffective.
Where does this leave Hyam? In my book on the bench (in other words first reserve as a holding midfielder). He is potentially a very good player but at the moment nowhere near as good as N'daw and not as influential as Luongo. I know he is a local lad and one of our own products and I am sure he will get a lot of game time but he is not yet the finished article. I did think N'daw who is clearly not yet 100% match fit should have come off a few minutes earlier and replaced by Hyam.
In summary it was a listless performance but yesterday's failure was that we missed those gilt edged chances - we should have slotted at least 3 of them.

Whilast I agree that an element of responsibility has to be with Jewell, the players need to take a look at themselves also. The chances that we missed last night were laughable. Thats not Jewell's fault.

We as fans need to get behind the team. It's hard when the football we are playing is not entertaining and that is Jewell's fault (Why are we playing long diagonals when there is not height in our front line??)

I just have to say that without a strong and covinsing victory against Charlton this weekend, Jewell must be heading out the door at Portman Road. As for who can replace him, I do agree that if Matt Holland have earned his badges, He might be the solution. I`ve seen him a few times at The Premier League programs, and he seem to have great footballing knowledge to him. Hopefully Charlton will be a turningpoit for our beloved Ipswich. If not; JEWELL OUT!!

A win against charlton will only paper over the cracks. We are going nowhere under pj. We need to get in a new manager with fresh ideas & kick a few asses at this stage.

I'm not a Jewell admirer but I can't think of anyone to replace him with, Reid, Robson and Dowie are looking for work. Could gamble on a young manager from the lower leagues but would anyone ambitious come here now.
If we stay up and some of the young players shine then I'll be happy.

agree with earlier posts , even if we do win on saturday against the Sc*m, sorry I live here in London and cant stand Charlton, anyway back to the original point, agree with a few earlier posts that even if we do manage a win, I really cant see a future, to me it just delays the departure of Jewell, lets face it the club wont renew his contract even if we stay up. And that last sentence sums it up really. We need a change and fast, he's been given a fair crack.

I don't think we will beat Charlton with our squad at the moment. Taylor and Chopra most likely out. Presumably Luongo supporting Scotland as a lone front man. Murray to come on from the bench.

I went to the match. There really wasn't much in the game but whenever Wolves attacked it always looked like they were more dangerous. Their defence was very well organised and dealt with most of our attacks very effectively. When they attacked we looked shaky. As everyone else has said, we need more centre-backs (plural). We need 2 centre backs realsitically to compete in this league. I don't understand why we didn't sign the German guy. Any centre back is better than no centre back right now. Desperate times call for desperate measures and we should have given him a chance to resurrect his career.
I really don't fancy watching YET ANOTHER relegation battle this season. It's early days but we are already in trouble....

Jewell has to the decent thing and walk, I completely agree with one of the earlier posts, Jewell knows he is probably unlikely to get another job unless it's League two or something. He is punching above his weight at us and knows he has to cling on to the job for his own sake, not for ours. The fact Jewell has yet to be sacked just confirms to me that the ME and Simon Clegg have not got a clue, the man cannot motivate our young group of players who need a passionet fresh face with new ideas to get them going. Our team is a mid table side but it's a team who believes they are not good enough and that's where the manager comes in, this is why Ian Holloway, Steve Bruce, Paolo DI Canio, Gus Poyet, Tony Pulis all get their teams results. You dont win point by bemoaning your luck, it's not a coincidence how we can't score or defend, PJ has to be much more insightful I dont know have a motivational chat with several individuals, try different training drills, take his club away for team bonding, make them do extra training, I dont know, but keep using his lacklustre methods and nothing will change.
