Town Topic: Are Town Fans Overreacting to Bad Start?
Friday, 21st Sep 2012 09:19

Michael Chopra and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas have hit back at Town fans who have been critical of the Blues after a start to the season which sees them sitting in 23rd in the Championship. Are they right to feel maligned?

Last night, striker Chopra claimed, in a series of tweets which were subsequently deleted after bad-tempered exchanges with a number of fans, that TWTD commenters “don't have a clue about football”, adding: “The proper fans have been amazing, standing by the team that's underperformed last season and at times this season but we will get things right in the end people.

“[Don’t] forget we've only played six games and we are only two wins off the play-offs.”

Emmanuel-Thomas criticised fans on Twitter in pre-season and expressed his frustration with some supporters on the micro-blogging site again last night: “I will stop interacting with fans all together until the sad ones grow up and stop tweeting garbage towards us. Apologies to all the good fans.”

Is Chopra right to feel that fans are overreacting to the first six games of the season? Is JET correct to feel that the criticism of players on Twitter goes too far? Add your thoughts below.

They're correct in the sense that TWTD commenters are mindblowingly negative. It's like sitting in the Cobbold Stand. Shut up moaning.

This is the worst team I have ever seen I'm my ten years of watching Ipswich.

I'm just hoping our form turn's round... I'm an eternal optimist

They're entitled to their opinion.....as are we, perhaps more so considering the amount we have to pay to watch them.

And I'm aware of the irony of my comment being a moan

I don't use Twitter but the reaction of some fans, in the heat of the moment, can be hurtful and even abusive. Sure we have seen some golden chances missed and some atrocious defending, but the negativity of some fans is unbelievable. It's not just the Cobbold stand either. The 'know-it-alls' behind me in the Co-op stand just never stop moaning. It drives me crazy and I don't understand why these "supporters" bother going if they feel that negatively about the team.

The team are just not up to scratch, having nearly scored more own goals than proper goals we are not in good shape.

^ and 'jesterjewell', how can you say this is the worst team in ten years? We may be playing badly, but looking at the squad we haven't lost any of our best players and have brought in some good young players for the future.

JET? Are you kidding me? Is this a wind up?
You have no right to come out and talk, you've been atrocious!!!!

ITFC have been atrocious for 5 years so who are you two to come and out and criticise us? We've endured it way before you were both here!

Sick of saying this - we are not reacting to the bad start - it's the last 2 yrs under Jewell, more than enough time to make even a small amount of progress.

That's without mentioning the rest of the Evans era - a complete waste of time and money.

“don't have a clue about football” doesn't bother me, claiming we would "lick ur [his] arse" if we met him, does.

There's a reason Twitter has it's first 4 letters. It's absolute rubbish
But backinbeige makes a good point, why not also have a go at the fans in the stands who even through the Robson years were populated by moaners. Not all fans, but it seems to be an Ipswich culture

Does not seem to matter at the moment if your cup is half full or half empty, Us Town fans are worried where this club is going!! I am more than happy, if fact i hope i will have too, but i dont see PJ as the man too take us foward. As previous posts a few years ago when i begged for Jim Magilton to be given more time, show i am not the usual manager out type.

Put simply we all love the club and we hate that it is going down the pan.

The players will have adulation and have their name sung when they do their job properly. When they put in 100% effort we will respond kindly.

But when they are not doing their job, not playing well and express our displeasure they should NOT be attacking us.

Totally out of order.

rubbleblue added 09:46 - Sep 21
We as fans can vent our displeasure by two ways vocally from the stands but who would hear it? Or by blogs/twitter etc. or would the employees prefer us not to turn up to matches and then the attendance be so low we cannot afford to pay them. Although for some a pay as you play and pay per goal might sharpen them up. So chops, jet stop whinging and make us all eat humble pie by going on a winning streak to end of the season. Coyb. In the context of this season Chops and JET may have a point. But unfortunately the forget that for the fans this is the 4th season where the team have been woefully below par and we've been getting the same excuses from manager, players and CEO in that time. Having been told the manager wouldn't be making the same mistakes as last season, we now seem to be going down the exact same path. Someone might point out to Chopra (who, incidentally, I really rate and think suffers from dreadful service from the midfield) that when Roy Keane finally cracked and had a pop at the fans, he got the sack the next day.

it's a culmination of years of mediocre tripe served up at this club, people pay good money in tough times to be entertained. and when we are not they have the RIGHT to complain.

The SBR stand is also full of moaners !!! A fair number have never thought of anything other than what Sir Bobby did , but they are too young to remember that he was not a success at the beginning and it took him a lot longer to get where he wanted us to be . There is too much " WE WANT PROMOTION TODAY " attitude and no patience any longer . Support the team and have patience .

So, just to be sure that I've got this straight...

We have got to shut up, support the team and if we speak at all we should only say positive and complimentary things about our lack-lustre, over-paid players? And if we don't then we're not 'true fans'?

And these journeymen then say that WE'RE the ones who need to 'grow up'?

When I am helping to pay your wages I get to have a say and if I was as bad at my job as you are at yours (I am a secondary school teacher) I'd simply be fired, not going on Twitter to moan that people are being negative about my incompetence.

My job is to educate and then, hopefully, to facilitate my pupils in achieving good grades in their GCSEs. This year 100% of my pupils scored A-C in their exams.

How is YOUR success-rate boys?

Ps I am imagining that you probably earn more in two or three weeks than I get in a year. You two are complete jokers - be glad of your privileged lifestyle and quit knocking the very people that you are letting down. I give you this - you certainly have some front!!!!!!

First thing I am not a Jewell Outer (Yet), but when you see highly paid footballers on numerous occasions unable to hit the target from 6 yards (except Smith on Wednesday) you are going to get criticism.

Everybody has bad games but it is happening time & time again. At the end of the day we all want the same thing, fans, management, players, owner and we are getting further away from our goal every season, it's not just about the first 6 games this season is it.

PunchNoHopers added 09:56 - Sep 21
I have never and won't criticise the players, its the tactics, lack of leadership and the excuses from the manager that are annoying me, it's almost as if Jewell is making his excuses all the time.
