Central Defensive Signing Could Be Close
Friday, 21st Sep 2012 12:51

Town boss Paul Jewell is hopeful that he could add a centre-half to his squad in time for Saturday’s game against Charlton at Portman Road.

Jewell refused to be drawn on the player’s identity at his pre-match press conference: “I’m not being awkward.

“We’ve been trying to get defensive cover in. We’re trying to get one in as we speak. Whether it happens or not for tomorrow, I don’t know, but certainly it’s an area where we need to improve, and not just there, we need to improve all over.

“I’ve spoken about players coming in before and at the last they’ve turned the car around and we’ve ended up with egg on our face, and we’ve only got Tommy and Luke Chambers as senior centre-halves and we need to strengthen that area.

“I was asked the question before in pre-season ‘would we have new players in’ and I said that we would 100% and we didn’t, so I’m never confident but I’m hopeful.

“We’ve got until 12 o’clock tomorrow. It’s not a panic, it’s something we’ve been trying to do for a while and there’s the possibility of it happening.”

The player, who given the lunchtime Saturday deadline would appear to be a loanee rather than someone currently out of contract, isn’t trialist Abdoulaye Meite with Jewell set to talk to his agent in the next few days: “He’s trained all week with us and I’ll be speaking to his representative over the weekend.”

We had a bad defence to start with last year. Delaney was then paid off, Sonko and Wright were released and Kennedy retired. From that position, we spent around £500K on the defence in terms of transfer fees (1/3rd of the Taylor transfer fee). Why haven't we invested in the defence?

I think it is about time we gave P.J. a bit of a break. We are only six games into the season after all and although it is me that is supposed to be the pessimist, I appear to be much more optimistic than most of you!

I could get blown by Kiera Knightly before tomorrows game against Charlton - saying it out loud doesn't make it anymore likely to happen...

Hi Kiera, what you doing here...

Clegg: 'Paul, tell em your close to getting a CB in, they'll have forgotton in a couple of weeks'

PJ: "do you think they'll forget I'm clueless too?'

Clegg: 'Come on paul, they've got a lot of eyes between them, I haven't got an endless supply of wool, you know'

PJ said he was interested in a loan with a view to buy in the next transfer window - hopefully he still has this in mind

Apparently PJ has done a deal with Palace to take Damian Delaney on loan with view to a permanent signing in Jan. A fee of around £500k has been agreed.

The question is, why have we only got Tommy and Luke Chambers as senior centre-halves Mr Jewell? Inability to bring the correct player in I can swallow, but not hanging onto Delaney until the next window is ineptitude of the highest order. You've only got yourself to blame.

Bullard player of the year ?
Andrews almost top scorer ?
Murphy solid last season
Luongo looking good this season ?
Stockdale excellent keeper recalled due to injury ?
Collins better than our centre backs now ?

Seems more than a few good loans

I like the bit when he says " it's not a panic"

So only 2 senior CBs in the club but it's no reason to panic, only pj could have come out with that...
