Chambers Surprised By Lacklustre Start
Saturday, 22nd Sep 2012 10:41

Ipswich new boy Luke Chambers admits he is surprised at the team’s lacklustre start to the current campaign — and that the strikers are not entirely to blame for the fact that Town are the lowest-scoring team in the Championship.

Looking ahead to today’s visit of Charlton, third from bottom and only ahead of Paul Jewell’s team on goal difference, he said: “The lads scored fairly frequently last season.

“But it’s not any one department. Chances are falling to everyone at the minute and they’re not all half-chances, they are glaring opportunities that we are passing up.

“The longer it goes on during a game, the more the other team stays in the game and they are always going to get a chance of their own. We are limiting teams to three or four chances and they are nicking a couple of goals, which shows you how close this division is.

“But I think that if we keep playing the way we have been surely it’s only a matter of time before these chances get converted into goals.”

Town are without a home win this season and last earned all three points at Portman Road on March 31 this year when Daryl Murphy’s goal soon after half-time was enough to see off Barnsley.

Chambers added: “We have to focus on getting the first goal in a game and if we do get that first goal there is only going to be one winner.

“I know we’ve lost the last two games but it’s a crazy situation because we were the better team in both — we created the most chances and had the most possession.

“We have to now start finishing off these chances. We could talk about it all day but at the end of the day if you don’t put the ball in the back of the net you are always going to be in danger of losing games.

“We’re all looking forward to Saturday. There is going to be a little bit of added pressure for us because of the position we are in but I think the lads are going to embrace that.

“They are not going to shy away from it — I’ve seen no evidence of that happening. We’ve had a couple of fresh injuries but we’ve still got more than enough in the dressing room to go out and win the game.

“Charlton are just above us but it’s still early days and we can’t build it up too much. We have to go out looking for three points and that’s what we should be coming away with.”

i wish players and managers would stop making excuses and just admit how poor theyve been. "we've been limiting teams to 3 or 4 chances"
your job as a defender is to limit teams to no chances mate.no chances equals no goals, its not rocket science

totally agree with chambers here, could have and should have scored 5/6 goals on wednesday, the sort of misses that should give them sleepless nights, shocking in front of goal, really was. If we can start taking the chances being created, and i say if, can see us being on the right end of some high scoring victories, i will take 4-3 victories all day long. If opportunities being created arent taken or they stop all together, thats when i will agree to relieve Jewell of his duties, these results need to improve.... COYB

So Luke Chambers admits he is surprised at the team's lacklustre start, I for one was not surprised I expected a poor season not just a bad start. I said in six games time we could well be at the point of no return, I also expected four points from the last home two games. Everyone knows the problem we need two Centre/Half's first and foremost.
I only hope that Mr Evans acts soon it's his decision on who managers the club, he only can make that decision, plus for the record I am very grateful he took us over when he did.

I'm not surprised at Chambers' lacklustre start after what Forest fans said about him. Shame we didn't put the Taylor money to better use on a CB.
