West Ham Confirm Henderson Loan
Tuesday, 16th Oct 2012 15:02

West Ham have confirmed that keeper Stephen Henderson has joined the Blues on a three-month loan. The Hammers have also confirmed that there is a 24-hour recall clause included in the deal.

The Dubliner joined up with the Town squad yesterday and looks set to go straight into the team which faces Hull City at the KC Stadium on Saturday.

Henderson was one of the trio of Portsmouth players the Blues targeted in January prior to his switch to Upton Park. Despite lengthy negotiations, the Blues were unable to agree terms for any of the three players.

In March he joined the Hammers on a temporary loan with a view to a permanent deal in the summer when he signed a three-year contract. However, since then he has made only two starts in the Capital One Cup.

The former Republic of Ireland U21 international had joined Pompey from Bristol City in the summer of 2011 having failed to usurp ex-England international David James at Ashton Gate.

Henderson, who stands 6ft 4in tall, had previously spent time on loan at York, Weymouth, Aldershot and Yeovil, and the Glovers’ Player of the Year award in 2010/11.

Henderson comes from a goalkeeping dynasty. Grandfather Paddy played for Shamrock Rovers in the 1960s, his father, also named Stephen, played, managed and coached at various sides in the League of Ireland.

His uncle Dave also played in the League of Ireland, for amongst others Shamrock Rovers, and another uncle, Wayne, currently plays for Preston and the Republic of Ireland.

Scott Loach and Arran Lee-Barrett are the club's current senior keepers with the former Watford man widely criticised for his performance in the recent 2-1 home defeat to Cardiff City.

Town, who signed free agent Nigel Reo-Coker on a three-month short-term deal on Saturday, already have Massimo Luongo, Daryl Murphy, Guirane N'Daw, Danny Higginbotham, DJ Campbell, Bilel Mohsni and Richie Wellens on loan.

Clubs are permitted to name five domestic loan players in a matchday squad with Henderson the sixth. Murphy (Celtic) and N'Daw (St Etienne) don't count to this total with their parent clubs from 'foreign' associations.

Great news!! I'm not convinced Scott Loach is up to the task based on what I've seen of him. He definately cost us 3 points against Cardiff with his shocking decision making.

I really can't understand all the vitriol that seems to have surrounded this signing. Of course I like Scott Loach because he's a Blue, but surely the point is that he needs to be pushed in order to improve. Or what if he got injured? I don't know how good Henderson is, but I can't see the harm in him providing some competition for places. As regards the 24-hour recall, I doubt we had much room for negotiation. The prime aim now is to move away from the relegation zone. If all this latest loan activity helps us to do that, then I'm happy. Let's at least give it a chance.

Now let me be first to state that Paul Jewell is a far finer human being in my opinion than the snarling, egotistical Dark Lord who was the worst thing to happen to ITFC period. However, limited that he was, I now think PJ has to rank below Keane as a football manageras the last 18 months has been a flipping joke. Yes Clegg and ME must take some of the blame but we have lurched from one crap decision to the next which would be bearable if we learnt but this "signing"just proves that we haven't just like the Wellens one (if I were N'Daw I'd be p&^%$d off too after what was from all accounts a number of strong defensive midfield performances). Unfortunately it looks like PJ is being backed in these panic moves so we'll have to put up with it til February when the loans all go back and PJ starts to sign another load of panic loas. Aaaaaaaaaaaagh!

How will we ever get a settled back four if we continue to play 3 or 4 different keepers each season. Its been a problem for years now, must have had 10-12 different keepers in the last few seasons, can anyone name all the keepers we have had under Keane/PJ!

Our best ever teams have always had settled keepers, Cooper and Wright come to mind. Is it possible to have a team made up of loans or short term contracts? We are not too far off that now!

Could be a good signing. It makes me laugh people saying he did not want to play it was term which broke down which is often an agent pushing too hard. This will give Loach some competition and push him on he is a great keeper but needs to be pushed to learn and improve. The eadt are reporting N'Daw is about to leave and we only have Wellens ofor another 2 weeks so this signing can only strengthen the squad COYB!!!! up the table we go and I for one will be having one very sore head in May the Day after the play off final as we are back in the premiership !!!!!!

Sorry but think this is a good move - we need three GK's. Appreciate Scott is a true blue and so am I but i should be ablosule rubbish in goal. I thyink we should have competItion in each and every position to make players fight want to play, want to prove themselves and thats one thing i haven't seen much of this year.

Am I being thick, but can anyone explain this sentence in the article 'In March he joined the Hammers on a temporary loan with a view to a permanent deal in the summer when he signed a three-year contract'. Is he on loan at West Ham or has he signed a 3-year deal with them???

@sirbenofmorlingshire - He signed for them on loan in january with a view to permanent in the summer which he did.

Don't want him at the club after messing us about all month in January. How can Jewell say we won't make the same mistakes as last year, yet after 10 games we have 8 loan players (9 if you include Reo-Coker's short contract) and we haven't tied up probably our best player in Lee Martin to a new contract again. Afraid to say that this club is only going in one direction and its not up.

Thanks Michael11 - I get it now. Share a lot of the feelings on here too. I think we need to look at changing the club badge to a circus tent soon as it's more becoming more fitting. On a positive note the England game was quite good last nigh.... oh hang on, that was another football balls up too. :-)
