Patient Town an Attractive Prospect
Wednesday, 24th Oct 2012 22:56

Chief executive Simon Clegg says he believes the club's patience with managers is one reason that Town is an attractive club for managers despite the club’s position at the foot of the Championship.

Clegg said: “One of the interesting things is how other managers view this club and one of the attractive things is that we won’t judge a manager based on one or two games, as has been demonstrated with Paul Jewell and also with Roy Keane.

“We have given the manager every opportunity and have perhaps gone much further than many clubs would go in terms of supporting them financially and giving them time to turn things round.”

The Blues chief says former Jewell’s exit earlier today came very much after both sides came to the same conclusion: “I think we need to be very clear that it was mutual consent. Genuinely that is the case, Paul and ourselves both felt that this was the right time for him to leave the club.

“He’s been passionate about this club. I can’t speak highly enough of him in terms of the commitment he has made to this club.

“And we should also recognise that this isn’t just a professional issue for the club to deal with but there’s a personal issue here to do with Paul Jewell.

“He’s put his heart and soul into this club and he’s not succeeded in the way he hoped he would do, and that is incredibly painful for him.

“He’s got an incredibly strong family around him that will support him over the coming weeks. We both hope that this will be a catalyst for change. And it will be an opportunity for us to move on.

“We’ve got an immediate focus of getting ourselves out of the relegation zone as quickly as possible but we need to think about the long-term game for the club as well.”

He says he knows a lot of supporters wanted to see Jewell’s exit earlier: “Everyone’s got a different view in terms of when the tipping point should be, but ultimately that decision has to be the owner’s and my own.

“I also recognise that everyone’s view of the entire football club is dependent on what we’re doing on the field, and it’s not been good on the field for the last couple of seasons, and over this season in particular and we need to turn that around.”

Clegg says he and owner Marcus Evans are ruling no one out of the selection process, including managers already at clubs: “We need to look at things in the whole and if compensation is an issue then that will be addressed and I can’t see it being a major inhibiting factor for us.

“There are a number of Championship clubs with vacancies at this moment in time, but there are also quite a lot of managers who are looking for clubs as well.”

He says the appointment they are looking at will be someone for the long-term rather than a stop-gap boss until the end of the season: “I think that that is certainly the way that we are heading.

“That’s what we’re trying to achieve and I’m confident that’s the outcome that we’ll be able to achieve.

“It’s a long-term appointment that we’re looking for, someone who can get us out of the current hole but also take us forward in the future.”

One thing I have to say is that I feel really sorry for PJ, those who chanted "you fat scouse bastard" should not be proud. That is cruel and very harsh, we all know PJ is a nice guy, so that was not in its right place.
I just got back from England, and I have to say it was a disappointing night to be at PR again, this means Ive seen us 5 times in a row, without a win, but my next trip is planned :)

Anyhow, Id like to see Curbs, Freedman or perhaps Davies come on. I cant really imagine Redknapp becoming our next manager.

Ipswich should be even more attractive for Chief Executives then! Although it is hard from the outside to judge where the failings are at the club that has taken us to bottom of the Championship, with ticket prices amongst the highest in the league and attendances falling to about 15,000...surely the Chief Exec has to shoulder some responsibility too as well as the last two managers. Do we not need a stronger board at the club with more football experience?

The plot thickens but we can narrow it down - no past Ipswich connections and no short term fixes. Sky Sports news site tonight reports we are seeking talks with Dougie Freedman. Could be a good call as he is young had a couple of years experience and done well at Palace on a relatively low budget. Would not be adverse to him at all.

I would really like to see Paolo Di Canio here. He's young, hungry, and won't take sh*t from any player. Noone would be bigger than the club and only players that want to play here would be. He's got some experience with Swindon now, and with compensation not being an issue, could be worth a punt?

Charlieitfc: if they appointed do canio, there would be someone that thought they were bigger than the club.....di canio.

Players would be scared of him like the Keane era

Clegg is right to be fair. We've always been known as a patient club that gives managers time to build a team and impart their own vision on the pitch. That hasn't really changed in the Evans era and that will be an attractive prospect for applicants.

Regardless of the current situation, Ipswich Town still a respected name in English football with a proud history and is a sleeping giant of sorts. There is a chance here for someone to really make a name for themselves if they can turn this club around.

Those Idiots who screamed obscenities at Jewell should be ashamed, make no mistake about that." YOU ARE NOT SUPPORTERS" . He' tried and ultimately failed and paid with losing his job. I bet he is really hurting. I would like to thank him for his efforts and his final decision to walk and i wish all him all the best.

Kicking someone when they down is nothing short of cowardly, bet not one of them would have done it to his face !

I did not hear the obscenities but whoever did it brings shame on the good name of IT supporters. PJ tried his very best for the club and we should all say thank you and let him walk away peacefully. A new era begins which is going to be the toughest task ever faced by a new manager, so he needs to be strong and resilient and good at plucking players from the lower divisions and please, whoever it is, whether he is your choice or not, give him and the players 100% support in these very trying times. Make no mistake, the club needs it fans more than ever!

Hate the Headerline to this.. our great club have been silly, not patient to give a few managers too long in the job.. we are attractive to most managers, as a great past still brings hope and great area of our great country..

Twice they've been patient and twice they've been proved wrong to be!

A young manager wouldn't be the way to go. We need to have someone with experience and who hasn't been out of football for too long (wouldn't rule out Billy Davies though). We went for the young appointments with Keane and Magilton. Di Canio has had success so far at Swindon but has more backing than most of other teams in League One and it is only his first job. Good players don't necessarily make good managers. Mick McCarthy or Owen Coyle if they would come to us.
