Venus Fancies Town Job
Thursday, 25th Oct 2012 22:58

TWTD understands that former Blue Mark Venus is amongst those to have expressed an interest in taking the helm at Portman Road. The 45-year-old is currently the assistant to his former Blues team-mate Tony Mowbray at Middlesbrough.

Venus is understood to have been on the lookout for a club of his own for a while and has been linked with his hometown club Hartlepool United in the last couple of days.

Signed from Wolves when Steve Sedgley moved in the opposite direction, the centre-half or left-back made 187 starts and four sub appearances for Town between August 1997 and July 2003.

Venus would appear to be very much an outsider for the Portman Road job with chief executive Simon Clegg hinting at last night’s Supporters Club AGM that a more experienced candidate is being sought.

Someone who may be seen as a potential candidate that fits that bill is former Stoke, Burnley, Nottingham Forest and Portsmouth boss Steve Cotterill, who was understood to have been recommended by Harry Redknapp and owner Marcus Evans’s other friends in the game after Roy Keane’s exit 21 months ago.

We also understand Redknapp’s regular assistant Kevin Bond, a former Canary, was on the list of potential successors to Jewell but is expected to follow the former Tottenham boss to his next club.

Crikey! you don't start your managerial career at Ipswich you start at a smaller club, would be a BIG gamble so I would say no.

Loved Venus as a player but we'd be going into the unknown (as with Shearer).

Please God not Megson,Cotterill or any other failure...as for Redknapp's advice,I wish he'd keep his trap shut.

Hope Venus gets an interview, I think without knowing what was said in the interviews it would be hard to judge who would be worth a punt really.
Loved the guy as a player here n done well under Mogga, eager to prove himself as a manager. Most importantly knows how Ipswich should be working as a club.

Hmm...... Im not too keen on these former players that are linked... Mick Mills, of course a HUGE man for our club, but NO manager experience since 1990 at an age of 63.
I love the guy, but is it the best for our club, not so sure.
Curbs, Redknapp, perhaps Davies, are my favourites... But I doubt we will get any of them

My view is that Curbishley is the man - we should have had instead of Keane. Not now has been out too long. Not goin to popular but McCarthy is only one who knows how to get teams out of Division and whilst some will say he doesnt play the Ipswich way - then reflect on West Ham fans who said the same and whilst that not entirely happy with Big Sam they wouldn't swap where they are now for playing the 'West Ham' way in mid- Championship! If were bottom then Karl Robinson would be my choice but bit of a gamble which would b right if we were mid table.

My suspicion is that Evans and Clegg will be looking for someone to stabilise our position and then move forward. To my mind that means someone with experience. If not Redknapp then it will be someone who has been around for a while and who knows this division and how to motivate players. That would shrink the publicised list of 34 down to just three or four. I think that one of Davies, McCarthy, Coyne (but preferably not) Curbishley (Should have replaced JUM but too long now) are going to be it. This is not the time for a gamble..........

To all the people saying "Noooo" to just about everyone who is linked, take a reality check - beggars can't be choosers folks! Look at where we are, look at the mess that is the squad left by Jewell & Keane before him....full of loanees and disgruntled young players with contracts running out after hardly being given a chance. Let's just accept whoever we can get (within reason!) and get behind them because this is now going to be one hell of a job!

We are not subject to 'accept whoever we can get'.
It needs to be a wise choice from the candidates who can devise a working team.

Hate the idea of curbs, megson and cockrol.
Curbs did well after a few years at Charlton but since then has done nothing he turned west ham into a team of misfits that couldn't pass a ball.
And as for the other 2 have they done anything positive in football?

Like many others on here I believe this is a huge decision Mr Evans has got to make and get right. There are many average managers out of work at the moment who would love to drop off the merry go round and take the top job at Portman Road. First and for most we need someone who will have the respect of both the players and just inportantly the fans. They need us to play football that fans will want to watch and hopefully bring the crowds back to a great ground and make us fans look forward to our saturday afternoons. He will need to build from the foundations and give young talent with hunger for the game who want to play for the "White Horse" .
If there is a person out there that can make this happen, please step forward. Unfortunately, from where I am sitting at this moment, there's know one fitting the bill.
Please, Mr Evans, prove me wrong.

Cotterill? NO, NO, NO, NO. I'd even prefer Megson tbh! (But it's close)

If Megson gets job i will stop going to Portman Road, Worse that both Keane and Jewell put together.

Mogga and Veno would be my dream ticket - Veno on his own would be intresting, I liked the fact that he was so 'not a footballer' while he was here - driving a 10 year old Audi 80, dressing like my dad.....

I also loved the fact that I made good money betting on him for first goal scorer having watched the squads pre-season penalty practice - 40 to 1, Swindon away, 5th min penalty....sigh, TWTD!

Venus is an interesting candidate, I'd certainly be more optimistic about him than I would the likes of Shearer or the other "old boys" who have been linked. He knows the club, has relevant experience and would surely sort the defence out which is our main problem at the moment. It's hard to speculate, but if he interviews well, why not?
